Hey Runners!

Hi guys! I've been on the Low Carb wagon again since Jan 1 and my running capacity has pretty much dropped off a cliff.

Before Christmas I was running 6 miles at a 8:00/mile.

Yesterday I felt like a was dying crushing out only 5 miles at a 8:45/mile pace AND I had to have a walking break at 3.5 miles out.

WTH? I was really bummed
Is this the lack of quick burning carb-energy in my muscles?
How have you dealt with a dip in performance? Will it eventually go away? Do you eat something else before or after?

I want to keep eating low carb but this was a very frustrating (and almost painful) run. I run about 25-30 miles/week and don't want to give it up!

There appears to be a lose of stamina and endurance during the first weeks of moving to a LC diet. The belief is your body is transitioning from using glycogen ( complex sugar ) to fat for your exercise. The transition takes time. Basically you are building up the biological structures to burn fat. Typical transition is 4-8 weeks. Once you have transitioned, you will not notice it.

There is some indication that you may be better off.

My personal experience was that I steadily gained back the stamina and endurance over those weeks. Then got back to "normal" levels in terms of performance.

Agreed . . . I did not feel good until 3 weeks in and then took me a few more weeks to feel 100%.

A good 3 weeks or so and you will see improvement. First time I experienced LC running I felt dead before and after the run.

Ug so glad I found this thread. I am doing a 1/2 in about 5 weeks and did a 4 miler yesterday with absolutely NO energy. I kept plugging along, figuring that going the distance was more important than pace at this point. I won't be shooting for a PR on Feb 17, guess I'll be after my first totally LC distance race! That's a milestone, right?

There is a book called The Art and Science of Low Carb Performance that would be a good read for you. It is by Phinney and Volek. They talk a lot about becoming ketoadapted, how long it takes, what optimum levels are, etc.

I got it from the Big A in Kindle version for like $1.99, but that was last summer.

Glad I found this thread. I'm an avid runner, and am just after buying that book on Amazon.
I'm planning on two marathons and a 50k this year...before the middle of July. So hoping the sluggish feeling doesn't last too long
