I would love to hoop! We made hoops a while back but then I had knee surgery and didn't try using the hoop during recovery...I have been waiting for warmer weather so I can try it in the garage....no room in the house...

I am not very good at it but would love to improve....any tips for a beginner?

Like anything else- practice practice practice.

Bigger and heavier is slower and therefore easier, but you're more likely to get bruises until you get used to it (I used to be purple from my waist to my hips, and then when I learned to hoop around my chest and shoulders I was black and blue there, lol. It stops after a couple of weeks or so)

There are TONS of how to videos on youtube and other places that can give tips on everything from beginner hooping to fancy tricks, I love them when I'm trying to learn something new.

Music makes it even more fun- the rhythm helps a lot. Either crank a stereo or put on some headphones. I have a neat little mp3 player that just goes on my head, no cords! It looks like behind the head over the ear headphones.

Just whatever you do, make sure you're having fun. If you don't love it it you won't do it

I bought a slightly weighted one and have used it a few times. I need to get back to it again. 1-2 hours!!!! How do you do it for that long? I can do it for about 15 minutes.

I build up to it, right now I can only go 20-30 minutes or so but by next fall I'll be up to afternoons out hooping. Also, I have music, it helps keep me going. And I take a break every 15-30 minutes to drink water and catch my breath

It's been a while since I watched youtube hooping....I'll have to find time to watch again...and once it's warm enough to do it in the garage I'll get out there and start over...it's only in the 20's/30's right now...too cold!

Hadn't seen this thread but a friend sent it....we Nashvillians are lucky enough to have a movement studio that has hoop classes and fun workshops, so you can learn basics, advanced, or just kick your own butt with cardio--the level 3 hoop instructors have gone head to head (hip to hip?) with the Zumba instructors!

Lots of folks pick up stuff from youtube, that's for sure--my teammates are doing all sorts of tricks we didn't learn in the workshops! I'm not so much into the trick/performance part....I'm a hard core hoop walker....

How did you guys get into it?

(Mamagiff--throw on some fleece and go to it, girl!)

I live in the middle of nowhere- the closest classes or groups to me are probably over an hour away

I got into it during something they used to do at the park back when I lived in FL, they had music in the park on thursday nights- a bunch of musicians from around there would get together and form groups and just jam. Loads of fun. Anyways- there was a lady there with hula hoops and I tried it and was hooked. That was several years ago. I'm intermediate at best, but I love it and it seems to love me too

I've gone from one hoop way back then to having bought 4 and made 2. Working on a twin set (2 smaller matched hoops) to start learning some hand techniques and I want to try to make a collapsible hoop next.
