Jen - Great to see you back and congratulations on all the great life developments. I hope you can stick around more often.

Deb - Marine Corps Marathon? It looks like you are in great shape to train for it when you decide with the runs you are doing now.

Bill - I'm glad you have been having good weather. It is mild where I live today, so running outdoors is a certainty.

I've been recovering well from Disney and outside of some foot soreness, I feel fine. Last week's mileage was on the low side with short runs on Tuesday and Wednesday with the kids. Friday was 35 minutes on area roads. Sunday was 40 minutes on the dreadmill at the gym. I picked the pace up a little to make the workout interesting and there were a lot of people to talk to.

This week will see a gradual increase, but I plan on keeping the days of running at four. I'll also be hitting the gym three times like I did last week.

My future race plans see two definite half marathons The first is Celebrate Life on March 14th. The second will be a return to Long Branch on May 2nd where I ran my best last year. At the end of this month, I may run a 5K but it will depend on the weather. I'm still working on deciding the rest of the year. I'm sure there will be stops at the usual local races. As for a third marathon, I'm not sure when it will happen but I am confident it will.

It's just been a busy week. Tons of meetings today and a lot of driving around in this crappy weather. I just want this week OVER. I could use another vacation-- already! It's barely been two weeks since our long Christmas break. Yup, that's what I get for working my butt off during the holidays

From Pete Pfitzingers - Road Racing
10 Week Base Training - To build to 25 miles per week

The schedule is based on building two longer runs per week. LR1 and LR2. Typically one grows into a longer weekend run and one a longish weeday run. You fill in with shorter runs during the week to meet the total miles for the week. Unless specified, keep all runs easy. The schedule can be tweeked if the startoff at Week 1 is too easy and you want build to 30-35 miles instead.

Week 1:
LR1-4m
LR2-4m
Total Miles 15

Week 2:
LR1-5m
LR2-4m
Total Miles 16

Week 3:
LR1-5m
LR2-4m
Total Miles 17

Week 4:
LR1-5m
LR2-5m
Total Miles 18

Week 5:
LR1-6m
LR2-5m
Total Miles 19

Week 6:
LR1-6m
LR2-5m
Total Miles 20

Week 7
LR1-6m
LR2-6m
8x100m strideouts
Total Miles 21

Week 8
LR1-7m
LR2-6m
2x1.5 m LT intervals
Total Miles 22

Week 9
LR1-7m
LR2-6m
8x100m strideouts
Total Miles 23

Week 10
LR1-8m
LR2-6m
2x1.5m LT intervals
Total Miles 25

From here one could go to a 6-10 week schedule for racing 5-10k races. After that build a larger base, go to a marathon schedule and run a marathon in the fall.

I haven't done much running this week due to my stomach, back and neck bothering me. Tuesday was a stomach virus which got a little better Wednesday. I woke up yesterday morning with my left neck and upper back hurting. It never rains, it pours. I went to the Chiro yesterday and he wants me back Friday. I feel better today and ran 40 minutes. The last time I ran was Monday with the kids. I guess the timing it okay since I am recovering my Disney. Outside of that, I'm feeling not too bad.

I did that once. No problem. Just have to give them some notice, so do it soon.

Which one?

Just checked the site. Looks really nice; I'm jealous.

Both full and half are sold out, so it may be a little tough. Keep us posted.

i am cool either way. i dont need to cross a finish line or get a medal. I have ran it 3 times already.. If they say nay to my request, i will just run it till 13.1.. its all good.. The ocean waves, the beauty of it all, is what i care about... its my favortie race in san diego by far... so nice... next time though if the halfs are full. then thats the way it goes.. I have done enough marathons right now.. I want to focus on halfs and getting my times down..

The whole carb things is kinda freakin me out. But I did have a banana today and an apple. and half a cup beans with dinner.. I figure it's a whole food. I am not eating prezels or crackers or white bread.. Tomorrow, I will eat some oatmeal too.. and drink lots of water.. what do you guys do the day before?

o.k i totally want to do a sprint tri.. I found one for next year here in san diego at fiesta island... 500 meter swim, 12.5 bike.. 3 .1 run.. PERFECT.. I just have a regular nice old race bike.. kinda.. but i have already rode it over 12 miles anyways, it has 12 speeds.. so that looks fun.. that way I am not just doing one sport specfic.. I follwed that tri program that I am sorry one fo you has in your siggy. and i am really excited.. seems very do able.. i can work my way up to a full tri. I am gonna start baby steps first.. tomorrow is my race... chow.

Ah, ok. I've not done one yet, but (as you can see) I'm signed up for one and have started some training. I'm doing the "couch to mile" program for swimming.

I suggest taking a look at the beginner triathlon site and forum. Why not join? Brian and Maria are also members. Let me know if you join so we can befriend you

Do you have specific questions? I'm learning right along with you.

Last year at Shamrock the half sold out so my friend signed up for the marathon but ran with the half which was a different start. She got a medal but she didn't get her time posted. The finish is the same and they probably thought she ran the marathon. She also paid for the marathon so she got a much nicer long sleeve shirt. We got a nice short sleeve but I would have liked the long sleeve one better.

Honestly I wouldn't worry about carbs for a day or two.You will be burning lots of calories.

Of course I don't watch carbs and haven't for 3-4 years.

I ran 13 miles today. The first 3-4 were on the fast side but the rest we slowed down. There are a lot of hills and I really feel the steep ones. I need to get better on hills for sure. I have a 10 mile race in February that is pretty hilly. Of course what goes up goes down and maybe I can make up speed on the downs.

Have agreat race Stephanie.

I don't ever seeing myself doing triathalons. I would like to swim but not enough to do anything about it. I don't own a bike. I have many friends who do masters swimming and spin classes and do tri's. I think the cross training is good but I don't think I could fit anymore workouts in my schedule.

I feel my legs after todays run. My hamstrings aren't happy. Hope it isn't all sciatica and it is just sore legs.

HOLA AMIGOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Remember me ?

I've been AWOL so long, I wouldn't blame you if you said you don't!!!

I was politely summoned to return here (thanks Paul) after being called a "snob" ... its okay, Paul, I forgive ya for that! Anyway, hi to old friends and 'good to meet ya' to new ones!!!

I'm in the final weeks of training for my third (and perhaps final) marathon which will be here in Tampa on February 28th. I've done it before (2006) but am hoping to beat my previous time...depends on how my "screwed foot" holds up .. but so far, so good with the training. Today was a 17.5 mile run and surprisingly I am not even sore tonight! Maybe it will hit me tomorrow? Anyway, its all good !!!

So any races coming up for you guys? I'll tell ya one thing ... I LOVE TO RUN IN FLORIDA IN JANUARY !!!! Beats the stuffing out of July & August, that's for sure !!

Anyhow ... I'll try and be more regular here and keep tabs on everyone ... and hope that all your enthusiasm and energy rubs off on me !!! I just turned 54 last month, so I need all I can get!

Betty

Betty it is always so good when you come back. please do stick around.

I think running in the winter here is better too but the ice and snow can be a problem sometimes. You need to dress for the weather but all too often we over dress.

No marathon for me till October. I guess I will have three half marathons before then and one 10 mile race and at least 2 10Ks and maybe one 5K. I haven't really planned out more then the next two months right now. I have a 10 mile race the end of February and a Half Marathon I am training for now Saint Patricks Day Weekend.

Keep coming back Betty. I am glad your 17.5 went well. I have a whole lot of friends training for one of two March Marathons right now.

Wow, Debbie, you're a lean mean running machine!!! How do you find time for all that training? That's my biggest challenge, between home/family, work, etc....Marathon training isn't flexible, so its been pretty tough taking the time to work up to 20+ miles ... but I'm getting there!

Goodluck with all your races; I know you'll do fantastic!

Are some of the oldies still on this thread? Jen? BAM? Tracey? Stews? Kathryn?
