Couch to 5K, anyone?

I'm on day 2 of couch to 5k. Anyone else doing this? Hoping to run in the "over 40" class this spring.

I completed it last year, it's a great plan. Good Luck!

Thanks! Any advice? (It seems so easy right now. Does it suddenly get difficult?)

Only advice is to stick with it! Oh.. and get fitted for proper running shoes! Have your pronation checked so you'll know if you need stability shoes or whatever is right for your gait.

I'm glad you are finding it easy so far. It will get a bit tougher as the intervals increase.

Are you using a treadmill or on the road? Are you using Robert Ullrey's Couch to 5K podcast to help you time your intervals? The podcast really helps because you just listen to it and he tells you when to run and when to walk, no need to try to time it yourself.

Best wishes!

Thanks, Maria! I am running on the treadmill right now and loving it (going barefoot). I have made myself Robert-Ullrey-type tapes with my favorite music for inspiration. I'm hoping that if I stick with the program, I will be able to run a 5k with confidence this spring--like a gazelle--an over 40 one. :-)

The program is great. I did it late last year.

Follow it exactly. Don't push and do more even if you feel like you can. You'll surprise yourself in no time flat. Good luck!!!!

Thanks, Dorothy! I have been holding back and only doing the three days a week as prescribed, even when I want to do more.

I did the same as you... started on the treadmill last January. I stayed on the treadmill for about the first 5 weeks before I got up the nerve to try the road. Now that I'm road running, I don't like the treadmill!

I was able to run my first 5K by March 7 which was the last day of the program. Made for a wonderful C25K graduation day! But let me warn you, it's addicting! Since then I've run four 5Ks, two 10Ks, four triathlons, and finished off the year with a half marathon.

I'm 43 and had never been athletic in my life, not even in HS. So I literally started from the couch last January.

I can't wait to hear about your first race!

Hi, Mel! How are you doing? (Remember me? I haven't been at the "last 5 lbs. thread in a while.)

Did you complete the whole program and run a 5k?

Thanks for that, Mel. I'm getting so many positive reviews about it, which makes me more excited about the possibilities.

I ran a 5k about 15 years ago without training and struggled to finish. (I just got up one morning and decided to go for it.) I'm hoping to be a bit more graceful this time, even though I'm nearing 50. Heck, I still feel like I can do just about anything I put my mind to doing.

Do you think you could run a 5k after following the program with relative ease?

wittykitten! - I saw you posted in the NC room. I killed it after I posted, or maybe it was already dead. I tried an NC room last year and could not keep it going then either.

I'm in Fayetteville.

Hi,

Been away from the Low Carb site for a long time....just getting back to it. Can someone explain to me what the couch to 5k is all about? Obviously a building up running plan....but, what are you guidelines...

Joy, it is a building up running plan that goes for 9 weeks. By the end, you're supposed to be able to run a 5k. I'm doing the last of my 3 days for the first week right now.

Every workout the first week is about 25 minutes long. It starts and ends with a brisk five minute walk. In between are several 60-second runs followed by 90-second brisk walking recovery periods. The following weeks add longer periods of running interspersed with walking recovery periods.

Here is a link to a website that explains how the program works:

Couch to 5k - C25K Running Program

Note that there are cost-based and free downloads available that have walking/running prompts and instructions mixed with music. You can also make your own tapes with music you like. (I am making my own tapes.) It's easier and much more fun to do the plan to pre-recorded music and prompts.

Let me know if you plan to work the program!

Witty, that's great! I'm hoping to run a 5k this spring, as well. I'd love to hear about your progress and victories!

How are all of you coming with the program? I can tell you in my experience I repeated week 3 several times before moving on. Don't feel pressured to move up a week if your not ready.

I liked it so much I did it three times!

First two times I pushed too hard and hurt myself. Third time totally on the treadmill. Then transitioned to the road.

Like Maria, I now HATE the treadmill. That happens when you start longer distances.

Also, +1 on getting the right shoes. I don't think you'll want to be barefoot for your first marathon!

Just remember, you may hit some stumbling blocks (injury, sickness, whatever). If that happens, just get better and pick up where you left off.

Good luck.

Thanks for that advice, Batlou. I am very competitive, and I could see myself feeling like a total failure if I didn't do it all in 9 weeks. I'll remember to give myself permission to repeat, if necessary.

Paul, I am seriously considering shoes. The treadmill grooves started irritating my feet yesterday. I can only imagine what the road will do.

It's all about the shoes, I left out that I did this program in the Fall of 2008 and was not equiped with properly fitting shoes. Shin Splints and restart Spring 2009.

Get started on the right foot, pun intended, and go to a running store to get properly fitted for shoes.

batlou,

so far it hasnt been too bad.. I am really nervous about starting week 5 today...I guess because week 4 was kinda difficult..I have been doing some weight training as well and my legs were already super sore last week so I think that made the running even more difficult. I havent ever been winded..I just feel lazy sometimes...so I keep trying to push myself...I think this may be a week that I need to repeat though..I just dont see myself running for 20 mins straight by day 3..but who knows I may suprise myself...

Maria,

I have given up on the NC thread...lol...I guess there arent that many of us...but I am planning on getting together w/ some friends from college ( I went to ECU) and running a 5k in greenville in april..I may even swing by fayetteville my husbands family is from there...and I also plan to run my first 5k at the end of march here in wilmington..thats what I am pushing for!

I would not worry about that 20 minute run looming on Day 3 this week. I had the same anxiety building up to it but keep going and you may suprise yourself. If you have to repeat Week 5 so be it, but don't sell yourself short.
