Way too much time on my hands!
|
Running after work today. I'm getting less winded but boy, do I sweat up a storm!! LOL
Working on my goal to have binge free evenings, too. I've made myself so tired that I wind up going to bed before 9pm! No energy to even contemplate looking in the cupboards. Take care everyone! |

I've started getting up at 4:30. I go to the basement and get on the rowing machine (only exercise I can really do without waking the family). I'm really starting to like it. It's quiet and gives me an upper body workout, which I've been desperately needing (I don't do weights). I also hung up a crude pull-up bar (wood, actually) and do push ups. I binge just a little in the evening at times, but it's been getting better. Being tired helps. I'm usually in bed by 8:30 or 9.

I have got to start getting up earlier, although working out right after work tends to keep my hunger in check as well.
Biggest Loser Effect was on again last night at the park. Not sure if this is the case or not but every weds evening the park has been packed with walkers/runners and this started happening the week of the premier. There was also a HS CC race going and I stumbled onto their trail. Surprised a few of them when I popped out of the woods onto their trail. Considered running with them for a bit and crossing the finish with them. Would have been fun to see the parents wondering who the old weird guy was.

hi guys... Ran 3 miles and kept my pace at 10:20 the whole time with a little puch at the end to 9 something. then I hit the spin class, whew!!!!!!!!!!
Getting up at 4:30 really helps with night time. I have to be in bed my like 9:30. I use to wake up in the middle of the night and keep junk. No more. I love the fact that I feel really good while running. I thought for sure no carbs would kill my workouts. But for me I atually feel better. I think my body like to burn fat and protein. I have never been the type that great satifaction from eating a big bowl of pasta the night before a race. Pizza was good and I quess from the fat and protein. Gotta do the work thing ![]()

GUESS WHAT I GOT?
I got bike shoes (clipless), new pedals, and a speed/cadence meter for my bicycle! ![]() I will be installing that on my bike tonight and fine tuning the adjustment on my shoes. Maybe even do a little spinning. I also got a smoother tire for my rear wheel so the wind trainer won't be so damn loud! I'm going to have to learn how to put on a new rear tire. That might take several nights! |

so I never saw there was a new thread and sometimes my aol doesn't tell me that I have new messages so I finally went looking for the thread. I can't believe all the new people. Welcome all. I need some real names and a way to get to know everyone so I can respond. I am so behind.
Since Labor Day I have been way too busy. My dear friend had a stress fracture of her femur and fell Labor Day breaking her femur. Later it was realized she also had a clavicle fracture so she has had 2 surgeries and is in rehab for the second time and I have been with her a lot. On top of all this my son started college the end of college and I drive and pick him up if I can. I also take him to work and also pick him up a lot. Add to this all my marathon training and work. Oh and my dad visited last weekend and I have been very busy. I am doing my last 20 miler Sunday. My week day runs have been faster then they should be but I feel fine running. Not so fine later because my right hamstring is now acting up again. I can handle it but wish it wasn't so. I also have some intermittent left heel pain. So I am doing lots of stretching. I still do all my exercises for my legs and core. Some daily and some every other day. My marathon is Oct 25 so it will be taper time soon. I am trying to get to this point and then will do some serious tapering and hopefully I can get the inflammation down. I have not run more then 4 days a week and no more then 44-45 miles max. I think this week will be a 44 miler. I may be adding two more miles to my 20 because mentally I would like do have a bit more then 20 under my belt. Weather is cooling down but it can still be humid some days. I think the cooler weather accounts for my speed being faster and it not seeming to feel as hard. I am handling the hills well but still get some heavy breathing and probably too high heart rate if I really push up the long steady hills I do sometimes. Still trying to figure out race day fuel. Have been doing GU Chomps instead of GU or a combo. A speaker who is a coach said we should be ingesting 200 calories an hour. I will do poweraide but not sure I can ingest that much GU type stuff. Routinely I do a GU every 5 miles or so on my long runs. I carry the Poweraid too. So that is my update. I have to go back and read all the old posts. My husband has taken over coaching the 10K program. He isn't certified but he is better then what they had which was no structure or guidance. He is taking certification next month. |

Debbie,
If you haven't been taking in 200 calories an hour, I don't know if it's a wise idea to try it on race day. Maybe you should try it on your 20 miler this weekend. GU says to take one every 40 minutes so that's about 135 calories an hour. I'm sure you're program has your taper spelled out. I like to drop the miles but keep some intensity into most of my runs. I usually feel rested at about 5-7 days before the marathon. I think one of the best things you can do is to be sure to get more than adequate sleep in the last two weeks before the race. The night before the race will probably be restless. MeeknHumble There are a lot of good shoe brands out there. Nike, Addidas, Asics, Brooks, Saucony and a few others are good brands. You have to know your foot strike. Running shoes typcially come in neutral, stability and motion control design. The manufactures do this to accomodate your running gait/foot strike. Most people can run in stability or neutral shoes and a certain % will need a motion control shoe. A runner who seriously wears out the inside edge of the shoe wearing a stability shoe or neutral shoe will probably need a motion control shoe. Really, the best way to determine this is to go to a specialty running store, not Sports Authority or Big5. The sales staff is or should be trained to determine what type of shoe you need by watching you run and checking your foot strike and gait.

yes we have a schedule with a taper. no problem there.
There are water stops every two miles. My plan is to walk the waters briefly to ensure I get it down and fuel before every other water stop. that means every 4 miles and with 11 minute miles it pretty close to the 40 minute( well 44). I can use the poweraid in the stops I don't GU. I don't think mixing both is too wise. I am told it can lead to stomach upsets. I think I have mixed both before though. I always carry poweraid( blue just like MCM) and when it is gone I switch to water. I can't manage handheld bottles but our coach would like to see us start with a throw away bottle so we can bypass the first water stop. I am not so sure at this point what I will do. Sleep would be good. I am hoping I can sleep well during my taper. I am planning the same intensity of runs just less miles. I need the time to heal before my race. I am off to work. As for shoes there is no specific kind I would recommend.I recommend going to a good running store and seeing what is best for the runner. They need to observe how your feet are. High or low arches etc. I have worn many brands and for the last 8 months have stuck to Saucony. I find Asics not padded enough. Nikes lead to heel pain and not padded enough. Brooks got alot of toe pain. Also I went back to a size 7 from 7.5. I have one foot that is closer to a 6 and the other 6.5 but when I wear my shoes too long my feet are so flat they slide and then the toe pain occurs. I have gone to four different local running stores. Right now I go to the one that discounts. They are all trained to fit and it has the best deal. Much better to save 20% or whatever the savings. You can get up to 30% off on clothes if you buy enough. I think it is 20% one item, 30% 2 and if I am correct maybe more for 3 items. I don't know it is so much cheaper then the other running stores and the same stuff. They may not carry every brand but the major clothing lines are there and when paying for $90 tights I am happy to save 20% and more is great too. I have to go. Not sure when I will get back on the computer. I need to get to bed early before my 20 miler tomorrow. hard when I get home from work at 8:30 and then I have to eat dinner. My clothes are layed out so one last thing to do tonight. I think I will try to carry some water with my hand held thing and can always clip it on my belt somewhere. I hate the imbalance. I want to alternate water and Poweraide and need two bottles to do this. |

Did 9 miles this am with a local track club. When I say "with' what I mean is we met them at the start and told them we were just in it to finish and an older gentlemen said, OH no worries, I do a 9 minute mile....
![]() Meanwhile I am a 11.5-12 on long runs and my friend is a 14!My ipod stopped working so I couldnt keep track of distance and my running buddies ipods are WAY off from mine [Mine always says we have to keep going] so I am not 100% how far we truly went but judging by the time out there we did our 9....

Meek where are you in VA? I am in Maryland.
Lil Miss good job with the run. Didn't know Ipods have GPS. I need to get to bed soon since I will be up before 5am. I will be up by 4:30am do I can eat at least 2- 2.5 hours before my long run. Aiming for 22. 20 on the schedule but would like to feel what a few more would do to me. After this the long runs go way down and the taper begins after next Sundays 14 miler. Stephanie, what half are you training for? I am doing Las Vegas in December with no time goal just there for fun and a nice 5 days away with my husband. Don't see Dean here lately. I miss Suzanne and wonder how she is. She was supposed to do Marine Corp and had booked hotels and everything. I always worry about long time posters who are missing. Again welcome all you new people and I have to get to know all of you and your names other then Meek, Lil Miss etc. It will take me a while. |

Deb - Here I am and welcome back. I've been busy at work and it has been hard to post. I too am worried about Suzanne. She has been gone too long. I'm glad you are close to your taper. Have fun on your long run tomorrow.
Kay - I am signed up for Disney in January myself. It will be my second marathon and I will only be there for a few days. I'm arriving the Friday before the marathon and leaving the day after.Jen - I invested in some Arnica Montana products and am really impressed. Right now I am using Arniflora Arnica Gel. It seems to be getting into the right ankle and foot. Thank you for recommending Arnica to me. I never heard of it until you told me and it seems a lot of people know about it. Waves hi to everyone else and loves all the posting.I've had a busy week, but been running (Monday 53 min, Wednesday 71 min, Thursday 60 min, Friday 46 min). Tomorrow I am planning on doing no less than 8/no more than 10 miles. Then the coming week will be taper, taper and more taper for the Long Beach Island 18 mile race. In regard to my ankle/foot issues, it seems to be getting better. In addition to the Arnica Montana gel, I have also been massaging, stretching and doing some supplemental exercises. When I ran yesterday, I barely felt a thing. I may furlough myself a lot this week to allow any lingering soreness to dissapate. My plan is to run Monday and Tuesday then taking the rest of the week off until Sunday. I will hit the gym and make sure to stretch. This has worked for me in the past to allow my legs to rest up and still be flexible for a race. I may cross train or run a few miles on Wednesday if the mood suits me, but I am being very careful. Back to work I go. Hope everyone is having a great weekend. Dean
