September Callanetics Challenge

If you haven't tried the wonder of Callanetics exercises than there's never a better time than NOW

Master the CallaneticsConcepts and take all the hard work out of body sculpting.
Callanetics exercises focus on emphasising and lengthening out of the pelvic floor muscles as we train. This creates maximum muscle tautness which will trick the body in to using the core muscles. Once we're in position and have isolated the muscle group to train we then sculpt and shape the body by creating a tiny, oh so delicate movement called a pulse.

Reminders

I thought I'd add some CallaneticsConcept reminders for you all so that you can apply them to each and every exercise and stretch.

1. Pelvic floor muscles to be engaged to stabilise and protect you as you move in to position. While pulsing or holding a stretch continue to tighten deeper and deeper to intensify. IMPORTANT: Don't stress about keeping them engaged as this will create tension in your mind and body. Instead have a relaxed attitude and trust your bodies natural inherent instinct to engage.

HOW TO ENGAGE THE PELVIC FLOOR:

At the base of your behind are your sitbones.; you can feel them by placing your middle fingers of each hand right on them as you sit on fit ball or chair.
Cough and allow and feel the pressure drop between your legs as your pelvic floor muscles drop down. Now draw or suck those muscles back up in to your pelvis. When you perform this 'sucking up' your sitbones will draw gently together at the base of your behind. This is your innermost layer of your pelvic floor.

When you draw up from this point your innermost layer will connect with the middle and outer layer of the PF.

EASIEST WAY TO THINK OF ENGAGING PELVIC FLOOR:

1. You need to hold in a bowel motion (or wind) and a wee at the same time.

2. Tighten the BASE of the behind by drawing the sit bones closer together.

No 2. being the easiest way for a beginner to bring awareness to the pelvic floor.

I encourage my students to practice engaging at all times during the day. Engaging the pelvic floor will automatically recruit your lower abs so it's worth becoming really proficient at activating this muscle group.

If you place your hands over your hip bones and lower abs you may feel how the lower abs stretch when you engage and feel your hip bones open and widen.

Hope this makes sense, ask away if something isn't clear. I'll log in later with another concept reminder. This is mainly for those of you working with 10/10 or Callan's original videos where the concepts aren't covered.

Happy September Pulsing

Thanks for that Sandra!

I managed to work in 9 hours in 19 days last month, so I'm setting my goal at 15 for this month...posting here really helps me to keep up with it.

That's barring any complications. I still get some slight swelling after a session, but not the huge swelling with gas and nausea. No one responded, so I guess the answer is "No," but really? No one here has had a hysterectomy? I'd love to compare experiences. There doesn't seem to be a lot of ladies at hystersisters doing Callanetics.

Let's do it!!!

Hi Everyone I’m new to this month’s challenge. Been doing Callanetics on and off for the last 20 years and love it! Joined the September Challenge in 2006, then found out I was pregnant.
3 years later and 2 kids later ready to get my body back in shape. I was in Scotland 2 weeks ago and tried the Callanetics Evolution class ran by Karen Oliver (she’s in the Callanetics Evolution DVD). It felt wonderful and inspired me join your challenge.
It’s brilliant to see so many Callanetics fans out there!!

I would love to join this challenge - I would like to shoot for between 5 - 10 hours... not terribly ambitious but we have a LOT of stuff going on at the moment (final days before wedding, then honeymoon, some horrific legal stuff and possibly needing to move house) so it is all I can handle!

Apologies, I've obviously missed your post on hysterectomy. I have students who have had this op and do Callanetics with no problems. What's happening with you? When did you have your surgery?

Hi Sandra! Thank you so much for responding!

I'm four months post-op this week. (Surgery was April 28th.) Actually, I think I'm doing pretty well now. I've managed to do everything on the 10/10 except I cut the stomach exercises when I started last month. I'm now up to two of them (feet on floor and both feet in the air.)

I used to do Pilates all the time. I went back to it a month ago (eased into it then did a beginner's workout) and was nailed with a very swollen stomach, pain, gas and nausea. I was forced to take some time off from working out at all then decided to try Callenetics again (after a 15 year absence) since I figured there are more exercises focusing on the legs and hips without as much core involvement...at least that has been my experience.

While I'm feeling a difference in my legs and hips, I'm still not close to fitting into my pre-op pants. My weight is staying exactly the same after 4 weeks of low-carbing. It's just not coming off like it has in the past. I don't have a lot to lose, but 5-7 pounds is the difference between a size 6-8 and a comfortable size 4 for me (the size of most of my clothes...thank goodness I bought a few larger-sized things before the surgery.) I'm 5'7" but have a small frame, so the extra weight shows pretty poorly on me.

I'm chalking it up to the healing and hope that being able to get the stomach exercises in will help. My ab muscles are MOOOSH! I'd appreciate anything you can add about your students' experiences.

I'm currently unemployed, but when I get back to work in October (unless I book something sooner), I plan on getting the EVO tape. It sounds terrific!

Thanks again!

I am in for every other day!

I can't believe it is September and today is my first day back at work. I have all of July and August off which was grand. My callanectics schedule changes to the evenings now because I can't get up that early in the morning to do it.

Happy September to everyone!!!!!!

Ok - first day of a new month and in three months time it will be Christmas and time to squeeze into those little black dresses again! I think a big difference can be made in three months to how you both look and feel, so with this in mind im definitely in for the challenge this month and going to try my best. Im gong to try to do Callanetics at least 3 times a week, go for a run at least 3 times a week (on a treadmill if the weather outside is bad) and my aerobics classes start again this month after the summer break. Im also going to be watching what I eat and recording my weight down here once a week to make sure that it does not creep up!

So - targets for this month are: 15 Callanetics, 12 Runs, 4 Aerobics. Weight currently 134 pounds (9st 6lbs)

Hello everyone. Happy Birthday Month, Highly Favored and Surarch!

I started my September challenge a day early, with 1 hour of 10/10 yesterday. Today I have done my 20 minutes of HIIT and will do my Push-up Challenge work later on.

Sandra, thank you so much for the concept reminders!

I'm really focusing on form this month. I was reminded on Saturday how easily I can start to slide as far as completing an exercise with the proper form. I was doing my push-ups for the day and my DH had to point out me that I was NOT doing a proper push-up. RATS! I realized he was right, (for once) and adjusted my form accordingly.

Here's my goal for the month: 14 hours of Callanetics by Sept. 30.

Thank you for the tips Sandra!! Callanetics is so hard but so worth it!! Every morning after a Callenetics workout, my belly is flat and my posture feels like that of a dancer. Just love it!!

I completed 4 workouts! 26 more to go and then I will do it 4 to 5 times a week on a regular basis.

Keep up the good work girls! You can do it!

Can I join?

I just started super callanetics and did my first hour on Monday. Definitely harder than 10/10 no cute breaks to watch the "bottom line".

My goal is to do it 4-5x per week. So I will say 18 hours to split the difference.

Do you work your legs out at the gym or just let Callanetics be your leg weight training?

Great, a new thread! Last month wasn't very good due to travelling and injury. I hope to do a lot more this month. I already did AM/PM yesterday and should have time for another full session today.
