Jillian Michaels Workout DVD's Challenge (Incl. Mini Reviews)
Hi and Welcome to The Jillian Michaels Workout DVD's Challenge!
Up for a challenge? If you know anything about Jillian, you know she means business and she pushes you to realize your potential and get results! I have been working out with her (in my home) for the past few months and along with Callanetics (there is a great monthly support thread) and healthier eating I have lost more that 25lbs and more than 20 inches If you are up for a challenge then this is the place for you! I purchased 30 Day Shred, Banish Fat Boost Metabolism and No More Trouble Zones (in that order) for about $6 each! If you already have them, join in! If you've been thinking about purchasing them, this is the place for you. My Mini Reviews (check out Amazon for more reviews) 30 Day Shred (30DS) I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the 30-Day Shred! The 30DS has 3 complete workouts. I really enjoy the circuit training; there are 3 levels, each with 3 different circuits of 3 minutes of strength, 2 minutes of cardio and 1 minute of abs. It's around 20 minutes or so and the time goes by so fast you don't have time to complain! On the days I don't feel like exercising...I just think...I can at least do one level of the Shred...it's only 20 minutes ! You progress as you feel stronger and there are two other ladies in the video; Natalie - advanced moves & Anita - modifications. It took me about 3 weeks to move on to level 2 and I didn't move to level 3 until almost 2 months later (but when I did I was ready). I remember the first day I moved on to level 2, after the 2nd round of plank jumping jacks (in the 1st cardio section)...I literally crawled to my exercise mat panting & out of breath for the ab work...it was insane!!! Possible Calories Burned: 200+ (this is only an estimate and will vary...please use an HRM if you want to know exactly how many you are burning and let us know Please Note: You will need handweights and a mat if you are working out on a hard surface. There is a lot of jump work, so please take care of your knees! Banish Fat Boost Metabolism (BFBM) I purchased BFBM as an addition to the 30DS. It is all cardio, cardio, cardio! It is consists of a warm-up, seven 6-minute circuits and a cool down. The dvd says it's 40 miniutes of cardio, but the last time I checked 7 x 6 equals 42! This dvd is intense...the circuit training helps and it doesn't seem like it's 42 minutes long...but you will sweat. It has a nice chapter feature where you can either choose the entire workout, or you can choose which circuits you want to do! You are using your body weight for all the moves. I was able to do the entire video on my first try. In my opinion, the second and sixth circuits are the most difficult to me...I guess because they have the most jump-work. I really enjoy the third circuit with the "old-school calisthenics", but the fourth circuit, which is the core circuit on the ground is insanity. The other ones are more of a kick-boxing style and I can do those...no problem. The music in the sixth circuit sounds like "scary" music ...once you've mastered the moves...you can just turn it down and workout to your own music!Possible Calories Burned: 400-500+ (this is only an estimate and will vary...please use an HRM if you want to know exactly how many you are burning and let us know Please Note: No weights are needed, but a mat is recommended if you are exercising on a hard surface. There is a lot of jump work, so please take care of your knees! No More Trouble Zones (NMTZ) I just started using this dvd this week and I have only worked out to it twice! As with her other dvd's, NMTZ is no joke. It consists of a warm-up, seven 6 minute circuits, and a cool-down. These moves target shoulders, chest, arms, abs, hips, back, legs and yes, the glutes! This dvd is insane! In my opinion, NMTZ is nothing like the 30DS! I started out with 5lb weights and by the time we were starting the second half of the first circuit...I was down to 16oz. water bottles. I realized that this was more weight work than I was used to...so I would use the 5lb weights where I was able and where I wasn't strong enough yet, I used water bottles...with no shame I might add , because I was still feeling the burn. In the video they are using 3lb weights...so I may go and purchase the lighter ones! As I was working out, my shoulders, arms & abs were burning and I could start to feel the burn in my glutes! I was very sore the next day, but I've done it twice and it's great Possible Calories Burned: 400-500+ (this is only an estimate and will vary...please use an HRM if you want to know exactly how many you are burning and let us know Please Note: You will need handweights and a mat if you are working out on a hard surface. There are weighted lunges, so watch those knees! I'm going to post my starting stats (I hope you will, too)! I usually weigh-in and measure bi-weekly, so when I do I will post the results! I will also post if I do any other exercises such as Callanetics, Biggest Loser dvd's or random cardio! Alright, "enough talk" as Jillian would say! Let's burn some fat, lose some inches and get that body we've always wanted and deserve !!!

Monday 8/17: NMTZ...oh my goodness. I had watched some of the circuits before I actually worked out and once I started I went from this

I'm using her BFBM and NMTZ and love them, but you're right, they're no joke! The sixth circuit in BFBM is insane, at first I felt sick to my stomach by the end of that circuit going into the moguls. She's tough. I'm seeing awesome results!

Hi Dana!
Nice to know I'm not the only one that thinks that 6th circuit is crazy! She even admits..."this one is tough"! These workouts really do get results ![]() I thought BFBM was tough until I popped in NMTZ...those "surrenders" are out of this world !I can't wait to see the changes in my body now that I have added NMTZ into the routine Last edited by HighlyFavored; 08-21-2009 at 07:32 PM.. |

I am a huge Jillian Michaels fan! I have used just about every exercise workout to come along...hers are by far the toughest and yet easiest... as you never have to learn steps or choreography. That's a huge plus for me!
BFBM is very intense and a few times when I was done I felt like puking.LOL! NMTZ, for me is easier. I actually like the surrenders...all of that circuit is great for your arms!! Not crazy about the floor work though. I vary BFBM, NMTZ, Turbo Jam, and Total Gym...I feel like I benefit from the diversity of workouts. Jillian is the best though! ![]() |

Saturday is usually my rest day...but something wonderful is happening since losing the 25.9lbs and I just want to keep working out
!This morning I did another hour of Callanetics and 30DS Level 3 ![]() !!!This is probably my third time progressing to the final level of the 30DS!!!! I had to take a few 5 second breaks during level 3 and I still have to do some of the modified exercises but it's still intense !!! |

Mogget & Jacki ks!!!Mogget...that dvd will be here in no time and when it comes we will be here ready to cheer you on !!!Jacki ks...that is very interesting that NMTZ is easier for you...I was like before the 1st circuit was over!!! I thought I was going to die , but her words of encouragement come right on time! She is awesome! I AM A BELIEVER ! I can't believe you like the surrenders ...you must be pretty strong ! I felt like my arms were going to fall off !!! What size weights are using??? I am strongly considering purchasing the 3lb size...especially for when my hubby finally decides to do this with me so he can use the 5's !I have to diversify my workouts as well...I alternate between 30DS, BFBM, NMTZ, BL Cardio Max, BL The Workout and Callanetics! My body never knows what to expect ![]() ! |

![]() ![]() I use a set of 3.3 lb weights so if you get some 3s... that will make a big difference if you have been using 5s...a lot more managable. I like the surrenders because I feel it working my core as well as my arms/shoulders. I was doing the 30DS but I moved on to BFBM/NMTZ before I did very many of the third level. What is BL Cardio Max and Callanetics? Have you tried turbo jam? Anyway...I have been working out hard for a year and still weigh the same. But... I've been a bad girl w/low carbing so I'm back on the horse...still trying to lose those pesky last 10-15. |

I can't recall if I welcomed you Dana
...so Dana !!!I did 30DS Saturday and I have been feeling soreness in my left quadricep! Expecially yesterday...and it's still a little sore today. That being said I am going to do some house cleaning and Callanetics...during the thigh stretch in Callanetics I am going to stretch a little longer and see how I feel afterwards...hopefully it will loosen up and I will be able to do NMTZ as planned! If my quad is still sore after some house cleaning and Callanetics...then I will take it as my body telling me that I need to rest today !I'll be back a little later to update and answer questions from over the weekend ! |

I'd love to join you guys. I have the 30 Day Shred and just started last night. I don't own a scale, but my clothes have definitely been tighter lately (started new BC pills about 6 months ago and it's been creeping on ever since). I figure I've put on 10 to 15 pounds. I don't care about the weight, but I'm sick of being flabby. I've never been an exerciser, even at my thinnest, so I got my a$$ kicked last night.
Here are my measurements:Waist: 27.5 Hips: 38 Thigh (left): 21.5 Thigh (right): 22.75 Thanks so much for starting this challenge!

Monday's Workout & Challenge Goals
Hi All,
I did another hour of Callanetics and the thigh stretch totally loosened up that sore quadricep ! So after a few hours of cleaning the lower level of my home I did...NMTZ w/5lb weights ![]() ! I did not take as many breaks as the first two times and the time seems to go by fairly quickly . On another note...I'm still debating whether to buy 3lb weights, especially since I was able to do the video today without having to alternate down to water bottles !!! I'll let you know whatever I decide.I felt GREAT after my workout ! I don't think I said what all I would commit to for this challenge...I think I was so consumed with the mini-reviews that it slipped my mind. My plan is to alternate all the dvd's and take a day of rest (similar to this) Monday: NMTZ Tuesday: BFBM Wednesday: 30 DS Thursday: NMTZ Friday: BFBM Saturday: 30 DS I will slip my Callanetics and BL workout's in there on the 30 DS days! However, I have to anticipate muscle soreness (like w/my quad today) ! I have to be careful not to over work my muscles and I also need to give them time to recover! It's so important to set goals for yourself and do your very best to reach and exceed them !!! My goals for this challenge are to do each video twice a week. So that would be 8 of each video by September 18th! I also hope to lose a few inches and pounds from this body! Since 8/21...I am 30 DS: 1/8 BFBM: 1/8 NMTZ: 1/8 What are your goals for this challenge??? |

Responding in Order...(Jacki ks)
You are more than welcome Jacki ks
! We are happy to have ya!I am still contemplating those 3lb weights ...I really can't decide! I will definitely take into consideration your advice !Today I felt those surrenders in every part of the body that you mentioned...my arms and shoulders were on FIRE !!!BL Cardio Max is The Biggest Loser Cardio Max dvd! It's 3 levels of cardio (Level 1 w/Bob is 20 mins...Level 2 w/Jillian is 10 mins...Level 3 w/Kim is 10 mins - I almost never do level 3...it is so boring )! I purchased this at the same time as the 30 DS (way before BFBM) and I'll do this whenever I want to add a little bit extra (cardio) to the 30DS. For example, I'll do a level of 30DS and BL Cardio Max Level 2 for a 30 min. workout Callanetics is a concept created by Callan Pinckney a few decades back and they are a series of movements that work very, very deeply into the muscles and give you fast results!!! The following is from the July Challenge thread "Callanetics exercises are non impact and safe for everyone regardless of age or fitness level. By the end of the month you will have: A tighter, firmer body More youthful body shape Tighter and higher buttocks Toned and flatter abs Increased flexibility Increased strength A longer more youthful neck Increased energy and vitality A strengthened pelvic floor" I use the 10 Younger in 10 Hours video but I really want the Evolution video which is more up to date! The instructor in the Evolution video is a member on this board and she always posts and answers questions during the month. She is a genuine sweetheart ! My body has transformed with Callanetics and I will always have this as part of my regimen...it also increases sexual pleasure ![]() ![]() !!!Jacki ks...you know you have to eat right Hun...I know it's hard sometimes ! I remember I was just about to finish NMTZ and I was thinking "I'm going to make me some pancakes" and Jillian said "Now don't go out and undo all this hard work by not eating properly"! It was right on time for me !!! It's go time now...let's shred that body, drop those pesky 10-15 pounds forever and be a very HOT, good girl !Last edited by HighlyFavored; 08-24-2009 at 08:49 PM.. |

!!!As far as space...you don't need very much at all! I would say about the length of an exercise mat and the space around it...I have a fairly large living area so I didn't have to have any furniture moved or anything! Enough room for lunging, jumping jacks, skates, etc! If you go to collage video.com, you can see clips of the videos and see how much space they are using if you need more of a visual For 30DS you will need handweights and a mat if you are working out on a hard surface! For BFBM, no handweights are needed...just a mat for the hard surface ! No other special equipment is needed.Last edited by HighlyFavored; 08-24-2009 at 08:38 PM.. |

Thanks so much for the welcome!
![]() I did BFBM this evening. I'm telling ya, I'm dripping with sweat at the end of that one and yes that 6th circuit is brutal! I find NMTZ to be easier for me, but in no way is it "easy". I'm going to increase my weights to 5 lbs. I already do some of the exercises with 5 lbs, but mostly using the 3 lbs. I can tell how much my body has transformed and how much stronger I've become. I'm lovin it! ![]() Now that I'm alternating the workouts and using them more each week, I hope to see even greater results.

The 30DS will definitely tone you up and have your clothes fitting the way you want them too @ you getting your butt kicked last night after your first day of 30DS! I thought I was going to die after my first time...the circuit training helps to keep the video moving and the next thing you know it is cool down time! Her words of encouragement have impeccable timing ! When you start to get stronger Acor, you will feel that it is getting easier and your body will start to transform ! Thanks for posting your measurements .It was my pleasure to start this challenge ! !My clothes were soaked after BFBM too ! I am so happy NMTZ is "easier" for some of you ladies, because I am barely making it through ! BFBM is easier for me, except for that 6th circuit ...maybe because I have been doing it for so long now !Let us know how the increase to 5lbs works out for you? I'm thrilled your body is transforming and that is a beautiful feeling !I hope to see greater results by alternating and using them more, too!!! I know adding this NMTZ into my rotation is going to take my body to another level .I love to see/hear the bolded...it is SO VERY TRUE !!!Last edited by HighlyFavored; 08-24-2009 at 08:57 PM.. |

Alrighty then I will get my stuff together and prep the lounge for BFBM tomorrow morning - have a workout mat and there should be enough space in there... just need to make sure I can play the file via the usb stick or burn it to disc if it wont... I have some tetchy little handweights I can use when 30DS arrives but it'll feel winky and funny after heavy lifting at the gym! Will try it out first and then see if I want to by another set that is bigger...

![]() Just did my second 30DS, took a lukewarm shower, and I still feel like I'm going to throw up. It was just as tough as yesterday, but it seemed to go by faster since I knew what to expect. I love that this workout is all traditional moves with nothing fancy going on. I feel like I can pay attention to my form and really keeping my muscles tight instead of worrying if I'm going to trip over my own feet. I'm using 16oz bottles of salad dressing as my "weights". ![]() Today I started paying attention to my eating again, too, just to speed things up and really make this first month count. I had eggs, bacon, a big salad with the fixings, an all-beef hot dog, and a nectarine. Skipped lunch today and need to make sure I don't make a habit of that. Just to make this month even better, I smoked my last cigarette a few hours ago. I've gotten down to smoking less than 5 a day, so I figure I might as well try to give them up completely. I'm sure it'll really help with my stamina, AND it'll keep me from having to step outside into the disgusting Florida heat. ![]() I'm so happy to have you all to be accountable to. |

2 JM DVD's Today...
Hi All,
Last night I was thinking about my goals and how insane they were and I began to talk myself out of what I have already committed to . I was thinking that out of the 28 days...I will only have 4 rest days . So, I decided to rest my mind and pray for some guidance . When I woke up I was in the mood to do 2 videos .I did 30DS Level 3 and BFBM ![]() ! This isn't the first time I've done more than one video...when I first purchased BFBM I would use it right after 30DS! Combining the two today was the answer to my dilemma...if I double up like this, once a week I will have two rest days per week ! I really don't mind working out 6 days a week but I want to anticipate muscle soreness or anything else that may pop up.30 DS: 2/8 BFBM: 2/8 NMTZ: 1/8 I am so excited I'll be back later to see how everyone is doing !!!Last edited by HighlyFavored; 08-25-2009 at 03:42 PM.. |

Well I ddn't have enough time for BFBM but I did 30DS... I gave it a fairly half assed effort as I mostly wanted to fid out what the program was and if it was suitable for me... I will have to modify the exercises quite a bit as my knees do NOT like any kind of squatting or lunging and Jillian is all about those!
Also will need some sort of super industrial bra as Jumping Jacks + FF's = black eyes. However I did it and that's the main thing... next time I will clear a bit more space, batton down the girls, and continue to seek the elusive no knee pain leg move....

HighlyFavored, I'm really bad about talking myself out of doing the things I need to do, too. It's awesome you were able to work it out.
I did another day of 30DS. I was more sore today so there were a couple of exercises I had particular trouble finishing, like the push-ups. 20 minutes seemed to go quickly, though. I don't know if I've ever done a workout 3 whole days in a row. ![]() Didn't skip any meals, so I did better on my eating today. I had braces put on this morning, so my teeth were pretty loose and sore by mid-afternoon and that kept me eating softer items. Eggs and bacon for breakfast; eggs for lunch; eggs, chicken, cheese for dinner and plain yogurt with fresh strawberries for a snack. I've also gone more than 24 hours without smoking, so I'm not sure what I'm more proud of myself for. Probably the exercise - I think I'll have a harder time sticking to that than I will giving up cigarettes. Hope all of you guys are having a great evening! |

I'm much better today Great idea to post what you are eating Acor I had a single serving of Oatmeal w/some flax seed this morning and I will have a boiled egg or two in a little while. Thanks for the compliment Acor! I learned a long time ago that if I am trying to talk myself out of it, I probably didn't really want to do it in the first place and I can't go through life like that!Congratulations on 3 days in a row. What an accomplishment Congratulations on more than 24 hours without smoking. What an accomplishment You can do anything you put your mind to and your accomplishments are proof of that ! I am proud of you for the exercise and giving up the cigarettes !!! |

I personally think NMTZ is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay (do I need to put more emphasis on it? haha) easier than BFBM. Yeah, NMTZ is tough, but it's nothing I can't manage. To me, the toughest part on NMTZ is the crescent lunges where you work the triceps. Those suckers buuuurn. But yeah, I feel like dying when I do BFBM. NMTZ isn't unbearable to me.
