First session with trainer this morning
So I met with the trainer this morning. I've paid for four 30 minute sessions and will do more if I need to, which is probably going to be the case. She did the measurements and all that and I weigh 178 lbs and my fat mass is..gulp...40.9%!! She agrees that a weight of 140 lbs give or take a couple of pounds will put me in the optimal range and is realistic so the goal I originally set for myself is still my goal.
She also said my BMR is 1489 and I really don't think I get that many calories in a day so I need to work on that a little bit, I think. I meet with her again tomorrow night to start the training. I'm nervous about it but also looking forward to it. Keep your fingers crossed for me, please! Denise |

![]() How anyone can get that kind of accuracy with a tape measure or calipers, I'll never know. ![]() Anyway, good luck. Not that you'll need it. What kind of workout are you doing with the trainer? Are you using the trainer for motivation or for knowledge? |

I get 1400 cal. just by thinking about food. There are so many cal in some food items. I now eat ritz crackers and pickles as snacks so I don't eat anything with a lot of cal. Get a cal chart I'm sure you are having like 5000 cal a day. Best of luck with training Jim Last edited by Chef; 08-12-2009 at 10:13 AM.. |

Paul, I haven't a clue what kind of workout I'll do since I've only met with her once but am using the trainer mainly for knowledge. I'm on the right track with treadmill, weights, hiit, and zumba class but need some guidance for pulling it all together and making the most efficient use of my time. I also have balance and coordination issues and she's going to help me work on that as improving those two things will improve the rest of my efforts, too.
Jim, I have calorie and carb charts and keep track of what I eat so I know I don't eat 5000 calories in a day. I rarely get over 1200 in a day. |

So I read the post from a doctor that said if anyone says they are eating 1200 cal and not losing then put them in a hospital and feed them 1200 cal and you will see that they will lose weight. Jim |

And I should believe it because a doctor said it?

Chris, I'm not sure how it was done but the gym is Good Shepherd Institute for Healthy Living in Longview, TX. I have it all in a printed report but am not sure how they came up with the figure.

The best way to measure total body fat is through the use of water. I've seen it done, but I've never had it done. Tape measure and calipers are just "guesstimates," good ones maybe, but still. . . .

Actually a dual energy x-ray absorptiometry(DEXA) is more accurate. It determines bodyfat%,fat mass, lean mass, and bone mass.

Good on you for getting a trainer! I started about two months ago and freaking LOVE it - I have totally reworked my budget as now training is my top priority and I refuse to cut down from twice a week (if anything I'd like to add a third set)!
I could always get a cheaper trainer but love mine SO much, it is expensive but absolutely brilliant value. So have you found out your program yet? |

Mogget, I met with her again Thursday night and did a few things. I used some of the machines *the right way* and did 2 sets of 12 on each of them. I didn't have much weight on them but according to her, that's where I need to start. She also put me on one of those stability balls and had me do some crunches and obliques work. Ouch, it was tough! Mainly because I lack coordination and balance and can trip over nothing. Just staying upright was a chore but I managed to do everything she asked of me and then some a few times. She suggested I get one of those balls so I think I'll do that. Coordination and balance are two of my biggest issues and interfere with zumba, dancing, exercising, and just life in general and she agrees those are problems for me but thinks they can be improved.
I meet with her again tonight for more of the same, I suppose, and should know more about what the program is by the time we're finished. Thanks for the encouragement! |

Oh I can relate, I have fallen off fit-balls so many times! As your stabilising muscles get stronger it does improve. I get my new program on friday so I am all excited to find out what i will be doing up till my wedding.

The certification the trainer holds often holds strong clues to how your training is going to go... The major certs (in no particular) are... ACE ACSM ISSA NASM NSCA Do you remember which your trainer has? |
