Runners: Tearing up the Track, Trail, and Treadmill 4/27/2009 - 5/03/2009
New week, new thread, happy running!
Leisha, WTG on 4 miles. Sounds like perfect weather to me. Debbie, that sounds odd about the chills. Has that happened to you before? When I overheat I just get dizzy and a headache. As it's getting warmer here now, I need to remember to carry ID in case I faint. Dean, guess you're getting the heat wave, too. Ditto on hugging the shade. This morning even with an early start, I was very hot very early in my run. I did two miles slow and then some hill repeats. Now I have a headache. DD refused to go to school (said she had a headache). She's fine now but it puts a damper on my whole morning as I can't work until my house keeper gets here at 11 AM.

Wow, I can't get over you all running in heat like that. I used to live in a place where it routinely got in the high 90s/low 100s over the summer and I just couldn't make myself run. I didn't really start until we moved to the coast. Still, once it gets over 70 I am really pushing myself to get out in the "heat." I guess I'm soft.

Thanks for the thread start Suzanne. I'm running so behind today due to falling asleep very late. I didn't get out of bed until almost 1:30 this afternoon.
It's another hot one and I decided to take the day off from exercise. I had a few things to take care of around the house and hit the supermarket. Then I went to my favorite park and sun bathed for about 40 minutes. I hope to have some color when I do the half marathon Sunday. I'm planning on running tomorrow after going to the gym. If I have time, I'll try to get some more rays. It looks to be another warm one tomorrow, but not as strong as today and yesterday. Dean

Suzanne, those prickly goosebumps with the hairs standing on end are one of the signs they always warn us about.
I hear the one women did fine even though she was incoherant when a person I know was with her and so worried. The man who was a very experienced runner had "heat stroke" with core temp of 105.2 but with IV fluids he was doing well. His kidney function was off but they though he would be discharged today. He may make it to our end of program party tomorrow night. |

That's scary Debbie. Just a 10k race too.
I ran 9 on Saturday but I felt kind of lousy. I think I may have had some kind of virus on Friday that lasted over to Saturday. I slept a lot on Friday. Rode my bike on Thursday and again on Sunday for 2 hours each time. Felt good on a 6 miler this morning. Tomorrow is off. |

It is hard to quit or stop yourself when running. I came so close. I really felt lousy but figured if I went slow I would finish. If I felt worse I would stop. I was thirsty by mile one. I remember that once thirsty it is too late. I didn't think of that at the time. I was thinking OK I will not PR but I will do my best. I started to get slower and slower and feel worse each passing moment. It isn't in our nature to quit. That is why people end up really in bad shape and maybe dying.
I couldn't bend over to remove my chip. I was too dizzy. I recovered fast in shade and with all the oral liquids. I was stupid though because I could have ended up in much worse shape and I do remember the man who died at Parks Half. Scary to think about. What did I have to prove?? Nothing at all. Oh well I am off for the next three days( from running not from work). I am off from work tomorrow but we do have our end of the program party. I may run a little Thursday or wait till Saturday and then my marathon training begins with reduced miles and a slow build up again. I have an MRI a week from Wednesday. Then I need to go see the doctor and hear the results. I really don't want to know but to have epidurals again I need to see where they need to focus the epidurals. I also need to know if things have gotten worse or are essentially the same. If they are alot worse I have to think about the surgical option in the future and I want answers to questions like recovery time and when I can run again. |

The guy who had heat stroke with a core of 105. I wonder if he was even dehydrated? You don't have to be dehydrated to have heat stroke.
What you said about running in direct sunlight. Sunlight adds another heat load factor that can cause your condition to deteriorate. That's why, if I'm running in a warm race or just training in warmth, I always wear a white top and white hat to reflect the sunlight. |

I had a white visor on but I had a sleeveless cool max fiber orange shirt on and black short. Too dark I guess.
I know you don't have to be dehydrated to get heat stroke. I also know thirst isn't good. It usually means you are already too dry. I passed my thirst off as mouth breathing related. How could I be dry. I just drank water before the start( was thinking this). |

Good morning runners!!
Had to take a break from running for about 1 week. So it looks like it is back to square one with me. I am finding it harder to get back at it this time. I may need to loose some serious weight before I can really run like I want to again. I think that is probably what is holding me back. But I will get there. Hopefully soon.... |

Sydney, baby steps. Just moving will make you feel better. You just had a baby. It takes time. Are you nursing too?? I found I held on to some weight with my babies while I nursed that came off easier when I stopped but I would always choose nursing them over weight loss.

Sydney, ditto what Debbie said. You'll get back into the swing of things slowly but surely.
That is really scary news about your 10K, Debbie. Dizziness always hits be first, followed quickly by a headache. That's when I start walking. Dean, about tanning. I spend my days avoiding tanning now. It's hard to do where we live.Bill, that's good advice about the white. I wear a tan baseball hat or a yellow visor, and have taken up wearing white shirts on every run. Most of my pants are capri length black, but the micro fiber weave is so thin that I get tan lines around my panties. All schools in Mexico are on mandatory shut down until May 6. It sort of makes me angry as there are no diagnosed cases of flu in this part of the country. And it makes life difficult for working parents. Oh well, better safe than sorry. And I got to sleep in this morning! But that means I missed my run. I was actually dreaming that today was a day off, but I don't think so....Need to check my schedule. Suzanne, we start Sunday. I am not running Sunday because my husband has a race to direct and I help. I will run Saturday. Coach says 7 easy miles. Next week should be around 20 miles if I remember correctly total for the week. I know there will be 5 miles at the track but not really fast miles.
It is scary about the swine flu. It will mean lots of people coming to the ER with every cold and sniffle and lots of flu testing. I actually got a tan Saturday. It was a bit pink but not a painful burn. All that reflection off the black top I guess and the strong sun. I am not running today. I want to. I have alot to do though. I just made two more batches of oatmeal cookies to bring to the race Sunday as one of the after race foods. Our club always has great post race food and I get to buy it this week. Now I need to go shop and come home and study for a test I have to take at work Thursday. So I better get moving. I am attached to this computer once I sit in my chair and sitting isn't great for me. |

I've been going out and riding my mountain bike on trails lately. I realize that I don't have all of the skills needed to be proficient at it but I'm getting there slowly. What I may do is run 4 days and bike 1 day.

Bill, I really enjoy riding my bike for X-training. I have a beach cruiser with a big comfy seat and no gears. As we only have the one hill, it's perfect for this area. 20 miles go by so much faster on a bike than by foot.
This morning we went to see emergency care physician to get stitches removed. He's pretty much in agreement with all the other health care professionals we have talked to...It's not time to panic yet. I've been wondering if Brianna and I had a very mild form of flu last week. We had all the symptoms but she was only sick for 8 to 12 hours and I was sick +/-36 hours. During our recent trip to Coatepec, Veracruz, we warned the kids not to say anything about piggies when we passed through the many "fitozoosanitaria" check points (livestock inspection). Tabasco is particularly paranoid and they always confiscate all our meat and cheese (usually in the form of cold cuts we carry so we can make sandwiches while we travel). We think those guys just want our sandwiches. It's pretty obvious when they try to confiscate the baguettes, mayo, and mustard as well as the cold cuts. We've been known to park 50 meters before the check point and pig out. No pun intended. Of course, being little pingos (mexicanismo for little devils) and better at reverse psychology than most adults, our children began a rousing chorus of "We have piggies! Tenemos cerdos!" at every check point after we specifically told them not to mention piggies or any piggy products. We didn't hear about the Swine Flu until after we got home. So far no cases in Q Roo. But it sure is hurting all the workers in this area and anyone with a business related to tourism. |

Wall, it was funny for the first 5 or 10 check points....after that we got tired of hearing about piggies. It's just ironic looking back on it now. Um, what's frost? I seem to recall hearing about something like that many years ago.
Actually, I'm jealous now that we're sleeping with the AC on most nights. |

Today was another hot one, but cool weather is in the forecast. I ran 57 minutes in the park easy. I won't be running tomorrow due to going to a funeral for a long time friend's mother. My plan for the rest of the week is an easy run Thursday and another visit to the gym (I did today before the run) Friday). Saturday will be the trip to Long Branch.
I have to be up for the funeral early, so I'm turning in. All my best to my running friends. Dean |

Last year was the end of Speed Development party. It is always fun to hear of those who took over 90 seconds off their original 10K pace. We have some very fast runners but some of the slower ones are the ones who made the biggest gains.
I wasn't the only one who had heat issues but many more had PRs that day. It is a course made to PR on. I haven't run since Sunday. I am hoping to run tomorrow but if I don't I will be meeting friends Saturday for 7 miler. It is cooler again and it will be raining on and off the next 3-4 days. I only hope my husband's race Sunday isn't rainy. It will be a pain for all of us who volunteer and need to set it up. Saturday we are marking the course rain or shine. I hope everyone stays healthy by you Suzanne. Make your kids wash their hands alot. If anyone gets cold sx, fever, headache and body aches start that Tamiflu. I am sure I will be seeing increased patients in the ER thinking they have the Swine Flu. |

Debbie, the Mexican gov't has purchased or confiscated all the Tamiflu in the country. Our urgent care Dr is going to get us some Amatadine, said it's the only thing available. We use Vicks First Defense hand cleanser any time we are in public, and plan to send the next 4 days near the dive shop. It's very remote and easy to stay out of public circulation there. I've been wondering if Brianna and I have already had mild cases of some kind of flu since we had all the symptoms but very short duration.
Eric had to go to Cancun early this morning for a full GI inspection. He's been having weird stomach problems for a few weeks. Since they are going to put him under for part of the testing, he can't drive. Since the kids are out of school, I couldn't go with him and he took the bus. I hope he has his hand sanitizer with him. Being stuck at home with the kids, I can't run. Oh well, when I did the calendar for my 30 week program for MCM I had 5 extra weeks. |

Garmin is driving me crazy. I'm trying to get my 305 repaired or replaced, but we don't know if the problem is the cradle or the Garmin. The woman I am dealing with said if I send the cradle with the Garmin, they will throw it away. My only options are to send in my Garmin and pay $79.99 to exchange it for a refurbished Garmin AND buy a new cradle.

Finally got my Austin pics:
![]() I'm not really hitting my pacer in the face ![]() Hitting the Wall ![]() There aren't any good photos of my hands, but just by looking at my newly acquired double chin I can see how bloated I was during that race. Not exactly photogenic but at least it eliminated a lot of pit stops. |

Suzanne - I love the photos. I'm glad I'm not the one behind you in the second photo.
All my prayers you and your loved ones stay healthy.Deb - The hot weather has finally gone away from my neck of the woods. I actually had to close my window this morning. I hope the ER isn't too crazy for you. This Swine Flu is scary to think about. I work at Roche who produces Tamiflu. They gave every eligible employee a supply of the drug a couple of years ago. I have mine safely stored, but ready for use if needed. Today was a long tiring day with my friend's mother's funeral. I didn't sleep much last night thinking about the upcoming day. On top of the other days where my sleep was affected by the heat, I was quite tired (mentally and physically) by noon. I took off from work and went home in the afternoon. A nap did me good and I decided to run. I felt great in the trails and went for 66 minutes. The run really helped me unwind and clear the mind after a trying few days. I was moving at a nice stready pace and felt like I could go 13 miles, but that is for Sunday. With running this past evening, I'm making that my last before Sunday. I'll use the time tomorrow to take care of some light work in the attic that I have been putting off (mostly due to the heat). I'll be bending down a few times which will help work the legs easily. Friday will be a trip to the gym for light weights, abs and stretching. I'm really psyched for the half marathon and shooting for a PR. Dean |

Dean, sorry to hear about your friend's mother; it sounds like you've had some long, tiring days. Get some rest for Sunday!
Ran for an hour this morning; it's hot, humid, and almost no wind. Great diving weather and we plan to head to Xcalak tomorrow. Hope to dive on Saturday. Our #1 divemaster, and later the manager of our dive shop, said he'd take us to his secret treasure spot now that we are not in the dive business He's brought up 80+ lbs of solid silver one-peso coins from a wreck site, all with dates of 1898 to 1901. Apparently you can't see the wreck any longer, but he knows where the coins can be found in the sand. I have one coin he gave me that he had cleaned and polished--it's lovely. |

I love the photos Suzanne. Hope you find the coins on your dive.
Dean, for some reason I have trouble sleeping the week before a race. Last week was no exception for me. I was also on steroids which keep me awake. I am sure you will do great on your race. You are fit and surely ready. Sorry about your friend's mom. I went in to work for a class. Was sweating a test I had been studying for and I passed it. On the way out I walked through the ED lobby and saw all the people sitting with their masks on. We have big signs at and stations with masks and gloves at all the doorways for people with flu or measles symptoms because there was a small measles out break here too. Why people don't have vaccinations for measles I don't know. I plan to run tonight. Really slow and maybe as little as a few miles. I am going to see how I feel. Sitting wasn't so great for me today. It never is. The rain has stopped for now. Hope it holds off for my run. I honestly don't mind it much but would prefer it not raining. |

DH just went out for his first run in a couple weeks. All his GI tests showed nothing serious but his stomach lining is irritated, gastritis I guess. I'm not sure what they are going to do about the tear in his abdominal wall (that's not the same as a hernia...) I'm not very good at medical Spanish and neither is he, so we'll wait for our urgent care Dr to translate it all.
So far no signs of flu in our state. Of the 20 ppl tested, one person had regular "seasonal" flu. I'm going to do a 5K run, then we'll pack and head south hoping for good weather to dive. Good luck to all the racers this weekend! |

stay healthy Suzanne. I think the big crowded cities of Mexico are where it is bad. I also think that living conditions in some place aren't the same as in the US. At least that is one of the reasons they are giving for it being worse there. Also since it has been around longer there.
They closed a high school here for one suspected case. The ER is constantly getting people with flu symptoms. These people need to stay home and away from other people. I hope I don't get exposed. I have been in the Psych ER training someone all week so not getting exposed like I usually would. Thing is you never know about that person in line with you at Costco or any where else you have been lately. I say Costco because I was there buying post race food yesterday and it is always so crowded. I feel fine after my run last night. My plan is to do the 7 mile route tomorrow. It is a bit over if we start and end at the parking lot and don't start at the mile marker up on the trail. Still raining on and off but much cooler. Made for much more comfortable running last night and I didn't feel like I had tired legs like I did Sunday. |

Good luck on you half Dean. I hope you have good weather for racing.
I did a little over 9 on Weds and 7 yesterday with 3 miles in the middle at tempo pace. Todays off, tommorow maybe a short bike ride in the morning if it isn't raining and then I'll probably do a trail run on Sunday. |
