I have now officially graduated to the heftier weights, I have no soreness after using them both on Tues and today. Also have been adding ankle weights to up the workout.

I'm a lap swimmer. I know what you mean about the music...I never used a waterproof mp3 player. What type do you have? I usually do a variety of stuff in my workout so I don't get bored, and play songs in my head LOL to keep me busy when I'm just doing freestyle laps.

Hi Everyone!

qbert... When I swim freestyle laps, I play games in my head too. It might sound silly, but sometimes I swim sets of laps one set for each of my four grandchildren and my dog. I think of fun things that each grandchild did or said recently as I swim their set of laps... the same thing when I swim a set for my dog... I think of fun things we did together or something cute he did recently. Helps me count laps and I smile while I swim.

...Again, Good luck with your race. We will all be pulling for you. I had my hair cut and styled this week. The Salon had some inspiring quotes on the wall. One of the read, "Shoot for the Moon, even if you miss, you end up among the stars!" It made me think of you and your big open water race this weekend. You are a star for justing attempting this big adventure.

Bookwormmom, what kind of weights are you using? how do you feel at the higher weights? I have leg weights that attached to the leg just above the ankle that I use in the water. I also use the form footwear to increase resistance and form barbells to strengthen my arms in the water. I'm really interested in what others are using.

I didn't get to the pool yesterday. I took my dog, Connor, to the dog park instead. We spent 2 hrs playing at the park. But it is raining today, so, it my turn today... I'm going to the pool and my dog is staying home.

Everyone have a great weekend!!! I will be offline this weekend. I am babysitting my four grandkids and 2 dogs (theirs and mine). I'll be really tired come Monday. Can't wait to hear about all your weekend adventures!

NewMe, they are just foam barbells. There is a very small set, then a set with larger foam circles on the ends, I started with that one, now the next set 'up' has two foam circles on each end, and that is what I am using now. (There is a '3 circle set too, maybe one day?) Dragging it through the water is a workout! Then I strap on the ankle weights they have at the pool, I see no difference between them and the ankle weights folks use to walk with.

Have a great gramma weekend!

Hello fellow swimmers,

I had a rough week the begining was out sick with a sinus infection/cold. I started feeling better Thurs so made it to water aerboics, went again on Friday AM and Sat AM. Not sure I'm ready to swim laps, can't seem to get my nose to stop running.

I'm going to go lift weights today and hit the treadmill.

Hope everyone had a great week

Probably post this someplace else too - but race report

I did okay, I finished, I wasn't last, and I didn't drown or get stung by jellyfish. And yes that last one was actually my biggest fear. But I'm exhausted. Swimming in open water was way harder than it is in the pool. I've been doing 3 miles once a week for like 10 weeks, and it got normal. Not hard, just boring. The open water w/ the current, trying (and failing to stay on course), and the wet suit made it REALLY hard. I noticed the wet suit feeling heavy and making it harder in the first 500 yards.

I also cannot swim a straight line to save my life. They have kayaks to stop you, and yell at you every time you get off course. I got yelled at 7 times. I know it took me 10 min from the first time they yelled at me to get back on course, so that added nearly a half mile to the distance (based on my regular pace) for JUST that one detour. Luckily there was only one other MAJOR detour, the others were all smaller. I've done some math since I finished and realize that I probably swam 3.5 rather than just the 3 required by the race course. It takes me about 15 min to do a half mile, and my time was about 20 min slower than 3 mi generally takes me. I'm actually quite frustrated w/ that as every time I saw other swimmers - I passed them. I felt fast, like I COULD do this well. But instead I spent 99% of the race off on my own, mostly off course and going further than necessary. That doesn't make me super fast - they were the same people I passed everytime I caught back up to the pack before I got off course again. And again, I spent the majority of the race all by myself w/o other swimmers around. I'm sure there was a HUGE pack up at the front I would never have caught up to, even if I could have managed to stay on track!!

At any rate, I'm exhausted. When I finished, and got out of the water; I fell over when I tried to stand up. I instantly pulled a calf muscle, and still REALLY need a nap. I also tweaked my back somehow w/ adjusting the way I swim to haul the wetsuit around. My wetsuit was too big, but it's my own fault. They're REALLY hard to put on, so I got the bigger size thinking it would make it easier. Turns out that when you swim that just fills up w/ water, and that water is super HEAVY to drag around. Driving all the way home I needed a pillow in the small of my back, and to readjust my car seat. My back is in actual pain. I'm pretty worried I actually pulled a muscle and that I'm not just generally sore. For one thing I've swam a LOT over the past 3 months, and KNOW that when I get sore from just fatigue it's always in my arms and shoulders first. Soreness, in my back is weird like an injury and not just tired. Also it's not just mildly sore either.

Anyway, the point of the post was to thank you guys. And to everyone who listened to me whine over the past 3 months while I upped my distance, thought I was dying, answered my questions to convince me that I needed to double what I eat, and just generally put up w/ me being obsessed lately!! Unfortunately for you, I think I might be doing a triathlon in the fall, and will be obsessed all over again!!

Congratulations!!! What an amazing accomplishment! We're with you and will be there for you when you train for the triathlon, too!

I have a bad cold, so, I have skipped swimming and water aerobics so far this week. I'm feeling a bit better today. I may try swimming tomorrow.

I had great weekend babysitting my grandkids. I was really tired by the end of the weekend.

On the foam weights, my pool only has one size weights with one 2 inch thick ring. I have my own set of weights with 3 rings that I bought for use at the beach on vacation. I sometimes use these at the pool and can really tell the difference.

I miss the water... I will go swimming tomorrow if at all possible.

Great job with open water swimming. Do you train with a group? If not, you might want to do some of the open water swims with a group that are offered. I am terrified of sharks so I don't do open water swims (those California attacks were a fright). It might be slighly easier to pick a race with where they use a lake instead of the ocean for the tri. Just a thought.

Anyone have the Endless pool or its surrogate the Fast Lane? I've got a bad back and bad knees. A water work-out would be best. I just CANNOT exercise in public. I have my own home gym, just need a pool! I LOVE the water, too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't have one but I've looked into them. It seems they really can put out enough force to keep you swimming but you have to swim in a fairly straight line from what I've read.

I actually like the turns when I swim so I'm sticking with the pool for now.

Could I just walk against the current in one of those?

I can't see why not. I believe you can adjust the current but I've never seen an endless pool in person.

You could walk against the current or use a kickboard. Are you like me, not terriby coordinated? I am not very good at lap swimming, but I can tear up water jogging or treading water or kicking with a kickboard! Of course, full body swimming uses all the muscles better than a kickboard would, but you would likely do some of both.

I don't have one of those pools, but I sure love the resistance currents they have in the walking loop at the gym pool!

Hi Everyone,

I'm new here and just wanted to talk to other swimmers. I had gone on my WOE about 3 years ago and lost 65 lbs. That was enough to fix my infertility (we had one 8 year old and couldn't conceive after that) and great news was... I got pregnant! Before I got pregnant and when I was at my heaviest, I started to swim. I used to be a lifeguard when I was in my teens, so you can imagine my disgust with myself when I was only able to do 5 laps and almost die with exhaustion due to being soooo out of shape. After eating better and keeping at it, I finally managed to get up to 75 laps a day. I was pretty proud of myself.

When it got closer to my due date, I started doing light water aerobics until I could no longer do that due to an irritable uterus. After I had my daughter, I got lazy and stopped exercising and dieting. I gained every bit of those 65 lbs back. And that wasn't even all I had to lose... 65 lbs was just a start!

I finally decided that I was going to start all this again and went back on my diet on Monday and started swimming. I've been twice. I figured that I would probably be back to 5 laps again and have to work up from there. I was able to do 14 laps the first morning and 16 this morning. I know that it's not much at all compared to the wonderful feats that you are all accomplishing, but I'm hoping that I can progressively get better and hopefully get back to where I was before I got pregnant.

Thanks for listening to my rambling and I look forward to talking with you all.

Thanks

Thanks gbert and bookwormmom!!!

I'd prefer water jogging or brisk walking to swimming. I'm intrigued by the Endless Pool as we have limited space in our backyard. I know one option is to install your own pool and then buy the Fastlane current machine. The Spouse thinks this is the less expensive option. We're thinking of doing that. I was hoping someone here had one and had used it for water jogging/walking and could provide a testimonial!

It sounds like you are doing great. I took several years off and am unable to do all the old workouts I used to do at this point so I get it. Plus I'm a few years older. It's hard when you have to start over but just take it slow.

I wish I had an endless pool but think I would get bored with it real quick. I know our local College hockey team has one when they showed them working out in it, it seem that deep.

Been busy with work and no slowing down in sight but that is job security I suppose. Just cuts into my water time. I have been doing H2O Aerobics almost every Tues/Thurs/Sat. If I can go in later on Fridays I squeeze in a Friday morning workout. I have started to do the treadmill more and more along with weight lifting. Sure miss the water though.

I bought some new water shoe's that I think are actually for scuba diving but love them. It makes H2O aerboics easier on the feet. I'm flat footed and wear a hard arch support insert.

Qbert 75 laps a day that is awesome. I do about 10 and think I'm doing great and the rest of my 45 minute work out is doing the kick board with and without flippers.

My workouts are always different and I often use a kickboard of do a kickset as well. I just try to make the sets a little challenging. You can use your kick sets with fins and do intervals to keep your heart rate up. Do one 25 fast, one 25 EZ. 45 minutes is a LONG time for just kicks though...

45 minutes is a long time for just that. It works out to be about 15 kick board, 15 full swim and then the last 15 i used different strokes. They are trying to build up my muscles in my legs because I need to have my knee replaced and the more muscules i have the easier it will be.

I swam full laps today for 15 mins then did 1 hour water aerobics. I'm so tired right now and still have to try and stay awake at work

Do you have a gym you can use to work to leg presses and the rest of the leg machines? I wonder if you'd get more benefit from straight weight work on the lower body?

Thanks
Hi and Welcome!!!

We have alot in common. I was a lifeguard as a teen too. I also swam on 3 swim teams when I was kid.

When I started swimming again after be away from it for many, many years, I could barely swim a lap without stopping and resting. I worked my way up to 80 laps. Then settled on 40 laps 5 days a week or 70 laps 3 times a week or some combination that got me to 200 laps per week or more laps per week. Then I joined water aerobics classes 2 to 3 times a week.

I feel great when I keep up a regular schedule of water aerobics 2-3 per week and 200 laps per week. Now, I'm starting up again after being away for a few week. I'll see how many laps I can swim tonight...

WHAT IS A KICK BOARD?
A buoyant board used to keep the upper body of a swimmer afloat while allowing free movement of the legs, used chiefly to improve kicking technique or develop leg strength and endurance.

This is like the kick board I own, but they come in all sorts of shapes and sizes and colors.
