I tried it once! I started a Belly Dance class at the beginning of January. The class only meets once a week, so I bought a couple of DVDs to work with on other days.

I did dance along with the Shimmy girls once, but I kept getting lost as the routine progressed! I'll likely try again. As I improve in class, I should be able to keep up with the Shimmy girls better.

I'm not a dancer, so this is all new to me. But I'll keep working on it.

Do you belly dance or are you starting?

Yes. I record it and do the routine when I get around to it. I find it fun and is a pretty good workout. It is a little difficult as it progresses and you try to put all the steps you learned together.

It's fun, though.

I've tried it but can't get the steps down yet...but I'm practicing! I have about 10 shows on my DVR It really IS beautiful! I want to master it! I want to get an outfit too! My DH thinks I'm joking - but I really DO want to learn how to do it! Seems so fun and carefree and, indeed, beautiful!

I have a shimmy workout segment on one of my DVD's. I do that one and Hemalayaa's Bollywood Booty. I only do it 2, occasionally 3 times per week, and I'm starting to see definition under the fat layers, I had to do a double check in the mirror yesterday while getting dressed. At first I thought it must have been the light.

I love dance workouts, If I could afford it I'd go to NIA and Belly dancing. I have a few other DvD's: another Hemalayaa, a latin one thats super hard (b/c of aerobic aspect), Elsa Lleandros World Dance, and two other Bangra style DVD's.

I want to buy a Bellydance one, if anyone has any suggestions I'm all ears!

Snow White - you should check into classes! We have classes at one of the recreation centers and also at one of the Fitness Centers. It's a great way to learn AND make new friends. I was worried about not fitting in, but the women there were all shapes, sizes, and ages; and everyone supports each other regardless of your size or age.

I bought a plain black crop top, two skirts, and a blue hip coin scarf. I'm not real comfortable in the crop top yet, so I usually wear a tank top with my skirt or leggings to class. But I'm going to try to stick with it!

I'm going to work up to classes, I've been thinking about it, and the at home workout has me into it. In fact, tomarrow morn. a Netflix rental of Bellydance workout is due to show up. I cant wait to workout. There are some dance classes here in my small town through an outfit that's great-they offer NIA, Bellydance, Pilates and other classes-but it's pretty spendy. I think I should try some other avenues. Well I feel lucky because in this town there's not a lot of pressure about how you look, just be yourself, however that feels. So no excuses, but I think I know what you mean b/c I haven't bared my midriff to the public in a good long time. That's why I like Hemalayaa's workouts, she promotes feeling good about yourself in way that works for me. Happy dancing!

I had class last night. I feel so uncoordinated! Seems like it takes me longer to catch on than most others. We start with a warm-up, then she teaches us some new moves, then we have to break up into groups and put together a short routine (usually with a more advanced student as the leader) and perform it for the class.

I seem to have a hard time when it comes to the routines, but I usually can pull it together by the time we have to perform it for the class. But I always feel like it's just memorized moves. I wish I actually felt like I were dancing. I guess that will come in time.

How fun Maria!

I've been thinking more about taking a class too. I wish I had a friend that would take it with me. I guess for now I'll just have to shimmy.

Here's my prob. I have hard ceramic tile. What can I use to put down on the floor? It's too hard to try to dance on. My feet/toes are undomfortable with the grout lines. WOuld an exercise mat work? I wish I had wood floors

I didn't have a friend to go with me either, but I'm hoping to meet new friends!

As for the floor, you'll need more space then as exercise mat. Could try it with socks or footies on. I bought the little padded nylon footies. Most of the ladies go barefoot at the recreation center; but somehow I just can't do barefoot in a public place <germophopic>. The only other thing I can think of is a big throw rug that you could maybe roll up when not in use.

I'm actually not doing real well with the class. I have so much else packed into my days that I'm thoroughly exhausted when it comes time for belly dance class and I can hardly enjoy going. I really need to make time to practice during the week in order to do better in the class. I'm considering just doing it at home with the two DVDs I bought for now and then pick back on the class later on.

I totally understand being busy A DVD might be good (or DVR SHimmy ) and just practice at home til you get some of the steps down.

I thought about the throw rug too...hmm...maybe I should check out a belly dancing website for suggestions. I'm a germaphobic in the pool area at the gym. I wear my flip flops in the shower and everywhere that I walk and it makes it very very difficult to get dressed!

wonder if I could use a large piece of cardboard? Like a big box and flatten it out (or even tape a few together to make a large cardboard "rug")

does that sound silly? I just can't think of anything else to do to avoid the whole tile situation.
