I've been reading posts on another body building forum and I can't recall any one of them recommending to reduce weight to burn fat. Can you explain why this is effective from a physiological standpoint if you can? I'm very interested.

On a side note, I've been low carbing it for a week and 3 days, less than 100 grams per day but I am also working out like a beast; cardio at least 5x per week and weight training 3x per week. I'm down from 128.6 to 125 and it is all fat, not muscle. And I was advised to increase my weight and reduce my reps to burn the fat which is what I did. From what I understand about muscle is that you either use it or lose it. I would be afraid that I would lose my strenght if I reduced my weight.

I look forward to hearing from you soon! Thanks!
Hi A,

Welcome to the site. Many great members here! Lots of great info-great place to make a life-plan.

We did touch on the fat burn part. The tread was refined and made better by comments of Ileen and Brian. We agreed that it is better to strength build with weight~rather than do high reps with low weight. In an effort to answer your question. I understand that the body burns fat and muscle at the same rate so don't worry about losing muscle and just having fat.

I always have looked to Brian and Ileen to give a clear answer so just keep doing the best you can.

I do a strength build for 12 weeks then do a fat burn in my own way with a little more weight rather than real light so basically I am always strength building. I just do a change up to make it exciting and interesting. Lets say you have been lifting for thre years and tomorrow you get to do a different workout that may produce results now that is exciting and makes you want to go workout.

I smile and have fun all through my workouts. I miss my workout when I miss one. But, that doesn't mean I don't get a little bored at times. So the reason to do the fat burn is to change it up.

No I don't lose fat to build muscle. I build muscle to burn fat to build muscle.
It is a three saying
1. You have to build muscle
2. To burn fat
3. To build muscle

Welcome and please join us here in this thread. I think it will take a few posts to make things clear. Prehaps we will have the absolute pleasure of a post/comment by Brian and Ileen to respond to you because of your concern about your loss of strength if you lose weight.

You are right Chef, the more muscle we have the better we burn fat. I was just listening to something on this subject on TV last night.
Thats what I am trying to do is build up my muscle tone especially inb my legs-hip areas.

I went for a nice swim today in the pool and did some of my water aerobics to. I have these water weights I use on my ankles and some hand ones to.

My doctor was telling me that I needed to keep my shoes on all the time and not go bare foot. I have some walking shoes I wear all the time, except when I am in the pool of course, and I have found that they are helping my legs alot more than just the old keds sneakers I was wearing.

If the hubby is not to tired when he gets in from work I want to see if he wants to bike ride around the block again. I love my bike riding and am trying to get the old legs strong enough to do more of it. Biking is also ok on my knees to, I think it strengthens them.
Someone told me once that riding bikes, even a exercise bike was bad for the knees, but I find just the opposite for me.

Also my diet plan is going well to these days. Made a great chicken salad for my lunch today. Tonight we will be having grilled salmon and I am making some asparagus with it.

Hi Mary,

Food choices sound great! I am trying cooking without spices or seasoning as a high level of LC. This thinking was projected at a LC site spoken of by a member here who was ranting about the other site.

After investigation I determined that there may be a reason not to have spice or seasoning when doing LC. I made my food for the week all without spice or seasoning. You know Mary, after lunch I was always hungry but not today. I attribute that to the lunch without spice and season, YEAH!

I wanted to let you know. Not having spice and seasoning is not how I have ever cooked, but it appears to have helped with hunger; and I hope it helps with weight loss too. I will let you know.

Hey! riding a bike is good for the knees.. Unless I am wrong but I do think all I have heard says bike riding is good for your knees.

I have known people who the Dr. recommended bike riding. Perhaps that is not correct in all cases. So I would ask the Dr. Just to be sure

All the best

Jim

I think bike riding is good for the knees to but someomne just once told me it wasn't. But I don't listen to people critism, I do whats right for me.

I have never heard of the spices being not good on LC. I always buy the no salt spices because I tend to swell easily with water fluid and I do not want that on my knees. Sometimes my ankles will swell some still.
I will have to check that out, thats interesting...

Chef I make chicken salad and tuna salad alot. I usually make it in the evening for the next day. I put celery, hard boiled eggs, and alittle tad onion in it to and always use Hellmans mayo in it. Do youy ever make it? I use the swanson can chicken, it taste the best.
I usually have a piece of cheese and a pickle with it and that makes a good meal, at least to me its good. And a glass of iced tea sweetened with splenda and with a slice of lemon.

Chef Wish you were here to get some of these fresh lemons and limes off our tree.
The grapefruit tree is full to but they have not ripend ye. I love using the lemon juice from them for cooking...They make a great pitcher of lemonade to.

Hi Mary,

Nice to hear from you. I think bike riding is good until we hear otherwise.

I made a comment about can chicken. I love the taste but I think you might see salt etc. with can chicken. Try to get boneless and make from fresh if possible. I make pressure cooked chicken it falls apart like the can but with no extras. The Mayo is LC good so keep going with it.

I love that you have fruit trees. FL is the place for that. I get fruit during late summer and I love to pick it from my own trees. Good for you having lemons etc. To have grapefruit is real excellent. A blessing to you

It does have some salt in the can chicken but its not bother me any. I do not cook or use salt on anything I eat. The only time I do get salt is when it is already in something like the can chicklen I buy.

I love all my fruit trees, I tend to baby them alot.
I picked some lemons off the tree yesterday. I needed one for my iced tea but I picked five of them to keep in the fridge, they were getting to ripe out on the tree and needed to be picked. The cold air in the fridge will keep them longer.

My exercising is going well. I am even getting out walking some even if it is just a short distance. My knees do hurt when I walk but I do feel they are strengthening up some because the pain in them is not as sharp as it once was. More of just a duller aching pain now.

Still riding my bike some to. Its so hot here that we have to wait later in the evening to go. Not riding far but riding. I am just taking short steps at a time until I can get the knees and hips better.

Still using my elastic band to in the house and my water weights in the pool. I only exercise every other day now but I do get on my stationary bike here in the house most every morning so I can get my legs unstiffen some. they are always stiff on me when I get up in the mornings and the bike helps get me moving.

Hi Mary,

Rest is as important as the exercise. I think Brian and/or Ileen mentioned that before.

Just keep going.

Weight is hard to get down slow is better than not. I often think of how slow it comes off but I am keeping a great WOL eating except a treat once in a while.

Let me know how your food plan is going???

I make pressure cooked chicken and chili with no spice in the fridge all the time.

I have hard boiled eggs and string cheese for snack

That is the major portion of my food.

Get rest take care

Chef, the chicken and chili sounds good, send me the recipe?
I put a roast in the crock pot this morning with alot of veggies, fresh mushrooms, and some Mrs. dash no-salt seasoning. I can already begin to smell its aroma, smells good to.

I think the weight is staying off me better as I lose it slowly.
I am still doing my exercises to, today I cut them short though because the other day I had some anti-flamatory and pain medication shot into my knees again and the shot injection site has really been sore, sorer than usual. I put some ice on it when I got up this morning, guess I need to do that again now because its really sore. The doc really went deep with the injections this time to see if he could reach more of the inflamation.
But I am ok, alittle pain never bothers me to much, don't let it slow me up any.....

I love to snack on string cheese, sometimes for my lunch when I am here alone, I will just make me a plate up of cheeses, olives, pickles and maybe roll up a piece of slice turkey. If I have hard boiled eggs in the fridge I slice them to on the plate.
I usually eat my biggest meal around 6:00 with my hubby. Then we go outside and get in the pool and swim some and I like to water my veggies in the garden and flowers to, do all that and then come in for a shower and go to bed.

Wonder where everyone else has been, hope they will come back and post again with us.

See ya later....

Hi Mary,

You are doing great keeping up your exercise.

I am doing more Iron Cardio to build the muscle and burn the fat. I am getting compliments from folks at the club so it must be working. I am having fun with workouts.

Are you using the exercise band more??

Mary, thanks for asking about chicken/chili
Chicken I put in pressure cooker makes it nice and tender.

Chili is just ground beef cooked and drained Grandma Browns Beans and a jar of salsa. Easy fast and good.

Heat in Microwave- put shreaded cheddar cheese on top for a special treat.

Will try that recipe sometimes, sounds good.

Yes i am still using the elastic bands for exercises. I like exerciseing so I do try to do some everyday. If I don't my hips, knees and legs will get stiff from this arthritis I have in them. I have always been active and hardly ever sat still much and I don't intend to do so now. As long as my old body holds out I will exercise it in some way.

I did not get to swim yesterday because we had a bad lightning strom here for most the afternoon with hail to. So when its like that i just get out the old faitful elastic bands and do some things with them. Now it looks like another storm is coming in today to. I guess its this heat down here that causes them to be so bad.

I have my spare bedroom all set up with my exercise things and also have my desk and computer in there to. I am thinking about getting me a treadmill to when I can find one at a reasonal price. I have been checking the ads in the paper to for one.

Hi Mary,

You should find a treadmill lots of people use them for a short while then get tired of them. Should be some around good luck with that. I have a bike and strider (like an eliptical) I love having the equipment at home. I watch TV or listen to radio while I ride or stride make the time go by.

Bad storms happen in your area stay in and safe.

All the Best

I like being able to do my exercise at home to thats why I have all my equipment set up in my office here at the house.

Oh, the thunder storms we get here are old stuff, Iam use to them, just like we get use to the hurricanes to.

I just don't want the lightning to zap out my computer again. I put a larger power surger on it so I don't have to keep unplugging it every time the lightning gets bad.
Hope it works better than the last one did and I don't have to go buy another new computer.
I think the lighting messed up my HP all in one printer to. I went to make some copies on it the other day and it would not copy. I checked it all out but nothing made it work. It will print and Fax still but the copys have lines running all through them. I tried realigning it, still it did not work. May need to get it looked at by a repair man.

It is basically that you do your strength training with as much weight as you can do for 12 weeks then you really lighten up the weights and do 5 sets of twenty for each exercise.

Example: I do chest pull downs at about 200 lbs. I do set of 12 each. During fat burn I do 5 sets of 20 each with only 50 lbs.

This does change things up and I do lose weight.

Thanks

Hey Jim,

Sorry I didn't read through all 100 posts but I see 12 weeks (doing as much weight as you can) for 1 cycle? That sounds like too long, especially without a week of active rest.

Each time you drastically change the rep scheme it will change the volume and should cause your body to enter the "alarm phase" of the general adaptation syndrome model, that is IF, you usedthe proper week of active rest to avoid exhaustion & plateau.

Great that you are planning ahead. It sounds like you are doing it right.

Don't want to miss you here so keep all safe. Great job on your efforts with the exercise.

Thank you for the post. I have enjoyed many of your posts.

First things have changes since the first post. Mostly due to wonderful input by Brian and Ileen.

I have never had a rest week since I started over three years ago. Should I? Please advise.

Cheers

Not much with me today, how about you all? Got some exercise in this morning, been alternating them and not doing the same thing everyday and its workin good for me.

Its hot here and when my hubby and I went for our walk we had to come back home because I almost got faint from the heat, and this was 6:00 in the afternoon to. Maybe from now on we will go later. Not walking far still but walking, more than what I could do months ago with my knees, so they seem to be improving some from all the exercise and the medication I have to take to for them.

Will not be here over the week-end, got alot planned and will be busy so I will see you on Monday again.

GIVE ME A E FOR EFFORT OK..EXERCISE IS HARD ON A OLD LADY LIKE ME.

Just checking in with you today chef.
I got some exercise in this morning but cannot swim today because its getting ready to storm here again, it it did yesterday afternoon to but I did get to swim some then before it came in. So today I just did my elastic band exercises and riode my exercise bike some.

I want to get me a gym ball, I seen some exercises in a magazine to use the ball with, its some exercises for the low back and you can do them without getting on the floor and rolling on the ball, you stand up and lean on a wall with the ball to do them instead. When I get to the store I am going to buy a gym ball and try it though. It may kill me but I am going to try it. Will let you know how it goes.

Will check in later to see if anyone else is here, I got a early start on my computer today, had to go online and pay some bills today and get that out of the way for the rest of the month.
See ya later.

Hi Mary,

I am following-up on The Ask The Trainer comment about rest break for regeneration of mucle and a reset of the body.

I have never done this so: I am doing a rest every twelve weeks to coinside with the 12 week Strength Building/ Fat Burning pregram that I do for fun.

I hope this does break plateaus that I have experianced every ten lbs of weight loss. I am close to goal so it is real hard to lose. But, I will and; I have a food plan so I will not regain.

Just checking in. Looks like a nice holiday weekend comming. Are you doing anything special?

Take care.

Cheers,

Jim

How long does the Rest Break need to be?
I only rest one day in between my exercises. Thats what I was told in rehab once to do when I was going there for my back after the surgeries.

It looks like rain here for us for the next few days, but am hoping it will clear up by Monday for Memorial day. We have planned a cookout here at the house with some friends coming over to join us.

My knees have been feeling better today, think losing some of this weight and the exercise to is beginning to help them some. It just took awhile thats all for me to feel the results I guess.
Still got alot more weight to lose and I am trying hard to lose it to. Maybe when I do lose it all my knees, hips, and back will feel even better then. Sure am hoping so.

I keep up my exercises and my swimming to and even added some new one with the big rubber exercise ball. They are suppose to be for my low back area.

Keep me informed on the Rest Breatkthing ok.....

Hi Mary,

Great to hear you are adding the exercise ball that is real good. It will also help with variety.

As far as how long to rest I think it varies. Perhaps Brian or Ileen will see this and advise you. Make sure rest is part of your program.

Hope all went well with cookout. I had a great weekend/holiday.

Take care

Jim

Our Memorial Day went well even though it rained all day, but we had the back porch to sit out on to so it was not to bad, we just could not get in the pool thats all because of the lightning. But my hubby still cooked the meal on his big grill, we cooked a beef roast and some hamburgers and hot dogs to, had so much food here and had alot left to, so my daughter took alot home with her for her and the kids.
I did good though and had some roast and my veggies, I stayed away from all the potato salad and sweets that we had here with the meal.
Hope you had a nice Memorial Day to Chef.

I like doing a variety of different exercises, It keeps me from getting to bored . I love the ball to, its fun but I have to be careful with it though, with this arthritis it has my bones not as strong as they need to be, and I am older than you so with my age I just have to be careful with my exercises.
I do have to take vitamin D and calcium for my bones everyday.
Have not been swimming for the last few days because we have been having some terrible weather with alot of lightning. So I just do my exercises in my office--gym room.

Take care...

Hi Mary,

Yes I have a great Memorial weekend. My wifes girlfriend invited us up to boat on a big lake here in NY. It was opening day at the Yacht Club so we were in a big group of boats. We went over the lake to the other Yacht Club and blew horns and fired a cannon (real loud) this is a yearly tradition then we cruised the lake had a picnic lunch at an island with other boaters. Then had a sit down dinner back at the club and danced to a live band. It was a very nice day. I am usually a home body so to get out was great!

I am stepping up my exercise after work increase by an additonal 30 min. In the a.m. I am doing 30 min on the exercise bike. I am pushing hard because goal is in site.

Keep up the good work on the ball I hope the weather clears so you can get in the pool. We are opening our pool late this year we open on June 13th. Just as well the weather has been cold and rainy this whole week.

Cheers,

Jim

Hi Folks,

Just thought I'd drop by for a quick hello to let you know I'm still doing Slow Burn, and enjoying it more and more.

My trainer has no mercy and is increasing weights almost each time I go, and my strength has definitely increased, along with my energy and it is really odd, but my appetite is, I believe, normalized.

As far as weight goes, I didn't weigh myself when I started, and I don't intend to for awhile yet. I didn't measure myself either........

The reasons I haven't weighed or measured is that I know, finally, that this is the way I will work out for the duration, and I don't need a barometer such as the devil's platform (scale) or any other device to let me know that I am doing something positive and healthy for my body.
It has truly become a way of life for me, as did low carb.

So, with that combination of Slow Burn and low carb, I feel I'm a winner.

My low carb is not really low anymore.......70-100 carbs daily, sometimes less, sometimes more, but I do listen to my body, and when it needs more, I happily oblige.

Anyway, hope you are all doing well, and even though I don't post often, every now and then, when I have a few minutes, I certainly like to come here and see what's happening.

Be well, all..........

Hi Sazzie,

That is great news how well the program is working for you.

I am glad you posted and would enjoy posting about how slow burn works. We all can use a change up from time to time.

Take care and be well

Cheers,

Jim

Hi everyone. Hope you are having a good day.

Got most my exercise in for today but still plan to go for my swim in the pool this afternoon if the rain holds out some. We have been getting some terrible lightning storms here but I thinks its all clearing up now and will be nice for at least a week or so.

My diet is going well to, and still losing some weight but I still have a long way to go before I meet my goal weight. But I am heading down with the pounds so thats a good thing.

Hi Mary,

Great! that you are losing weight and doing so much.

I liked sazzie's post about slow-burn. I have been looking into this and spoke to a trainer at my club about the use of this.

Result:

I will add to 12 week program. Right now I am doing the Iron Cardio part for the next 12 weeks. That is the new name for fat burn. I will be doing a one day a week slow burn with the most heavy weight that I can doing three sets of 5-7 reps. In slow burn fashion~ that is the lift~ the static stop~the negitive down motion. This really puts a part of the muscle in play that usually never gets used. The Slow twitch The Fast Twitch and The heavy deep muscle fiber.

Mary please be careful if you try this. If you lift heavy let many days go by for the body/muscles to recover.

Thanks sazzie for suggesting this slow burn concept. Let us know how it is working for you

Cheers,

Jim

Not much going on with me today. We are getting another bad thunder storm here today so I will not get to go swimming so I am just doing some of my other exercises here in the house. Already did some with my elastic bands and my arm weights. Been riding my stationary bike alot to to help strengthen my leg muscles more. They are still weak on me and I cannot understand why because I do all the exercises for them that my doctor gave me to do. I do leg lifts and squats to. I may have to go for a MRI on my legs to see whats up with them.
I know I have some nerve damage in them since I had the back surgeries a few years back but it was necessary to have or I would not be walking at all now without it. Before the surgeries both my legs went numb on me and the pain was beyond anything I have ever had before, and I could not walk so they called in a spinal specilist to me and he did surgery right away. But I have been hoping the strength and nerve damage would get better over time, and it has some but not like it needs to be.
But I will keep exercising hoping one day they will strengthen up better. I am walking and thats all that matters to me right now.
I have been going for short walks in my neighborhood and riding my bike to some and thats a great improvement right there.

My low carb is going well to. I eat good with it all week but on the week ends when we are out and about doing things I may eat alittle wrong, but even then I still do not over-do it to much. I did have a cookie with my coffee last Saturday when we ate out at Golden Corral. But I am sticking to plan most times and still practicing my portion control to.
