My doctor does tell me to exercise my body and knees and rest some in between so not to over do on the knees so thats what I have been doing. I ride my exercise bike for 15 minutes a day and then rest the knees for about a hour and then do my chair exercises. If you have never seen the chair exercise they have it on a video you can order. Check the net for it or just read up on chair exercises. It sure can help people like me who cannot do much exercise and give us a way to get some exercise other wise we would not do it.
I have never heard of the hard fat and soft fat thing. I need to do some research on that. It seems interesting. I am fat in the stomach area and really do need to get rid of it. I lose weight but the fat there still just wants to stay and hang around. Chef, I was wondering if there are certian foods that can speed up fat buring, do you know of any? I heard some people once talking about this but never got the whole story on it. Have you ever heard of this?

I don't know anything about the hard versus soft fat. I would tell you that there certainly is subcutaneous fat and visceral fat. Subcutaneous fat is underneath the skin, and visceral is inside the peritoneal cavity. Despite what you might think, visceral fat is metabolically active (and the most dangerous), but should be the first to go with a good weight loss program. I would be happy to continue with this discussion. My exercise program is focused on weights, I go to the gym 3 times a week with my partner and we have been following a program for the last six months. Thus I spend 3-6 hours a week with strength training and perhaps an hour or two with cardio. I hope that is helpful. |

Brian, my doctor tells me my knee is worn out. I injured it a long time ago and its never been the same. I have been to rehab with it so many times I cannot count them all. I have gone through extensive strength training for my knees in the pass and just as recently as last March to. Nothing helps it, not even the swimming. Exercise usually makes the pain in worse but if I do not exercise at all with it, it will stiffen up so bad it is hard to even move or walk on it. I have arthritis in it really bad also.
I wear a knee brace on it most days when I am up and about on it. Both my knees have arthritis but the one I injured along time ago is the one that is so bad. The only weights I do is my hand weights. I try to keep my upper portion of my body in good shape so my joints will not go bad in it. I have arthritis real bad, its a inherited thing that goes back to my great grand mother. My sister has it bad to. What are some good weights to use for upper body strength? I use some pool hand weights to and some ankle weights also in the pool. I have a elastic band I use for my arm exercises. I exercise regular in spite of the pain from my arthritis. Always been very active, no reason to slow up now just because I have arhtritis and a few more aches and pains. Last edited by Pcola Girl; 01-07-2009 at 01:48 PM.. |

Sorry to hear about your knees. You certainly can still do a variety of upper body strength exercises without knee involvement. You can probably do back exercises like back extension quite readily. You should be able to do a variety of pressing movements, such as bench or shoulder. You should be able to row. You can do lat pulldown, chinups, and dips. You should use as much weight as possible that allows you to complete the set with proper form. Bands are fine, but they have a particular resistance curve. I find it always preferable to use free weights. You might be able to start these movements with light weights 10 or 15 lbs, but over time you will get stronger and you will need upwards of 50 lbs for many of these movements.
You really might want to look into the concept 2 rower (Concept2: The World's Best Rowing Machine). You could use it with your knees locked straight and it can really give you a good workout. My gym has a dozen of them. |

I am also back on the program. I was real good but I still gained 5 lbs instead of losing 3 lbs in the time period. Thank you for welcoming BS to the group. I am so very happy to hear feedback for Mary, yes, I am very moved if his help can help her with a bigger problem than we have. Just simple weight is tough without everyday pain??? So I joined a new club the financial world situation has provided advantages in some areas. This is a great club 5 min from my office. It was to expensive when I was looking before now it is 19.99 for 18 months. Wow. The club is Global Fitness and it is nice juice bar sauna free cardio ju jitsu classed of course 25 min after I get out of work so I can attend any and all. I will continue the 12 week fat burning endurance program until Mar 1 then it will be s switch up to Strength Building. This club is huge with upstairs for all cardio first floor for weights and special rooms for classes. In other words I am excited and in heaven. ![]() Take care.. Jim ![]()

Just wanted to say hi. I just finished up my exercising and now resting some.
The weather is so nice today that I think I am going to try to go for a short walk around the yard if my knee holds out for me to do so. |

I hope you did have that walk and it was all good. I like BC is here and has alot of good info. We are in a cold spell and normally it would make me want to hibernate but as that I have a new club to go to I am very excited to go workout. I hope you can move your upper body enough to get some exercise in. I am off for the weekend so please update us all here as to your progress next week if you have time. Be careful getting in and out of the truck.. Cheers Jim ![]() |

I almost missed this post. I like to look into fat burning foods all the time I just got heath magazine and there were many fat burning foods listed. Does this all works I'm not 100% sure but if it is healthy then why not try it. I like: Nuts - I have walnuts and almonds everyday no to many. In studies people that ate nuts lost more weight then those who didn't/ Dairy - I like yogart I have a low sugar low fat yogart everyday. People that ate yogart and dairy lost more weight then people that didn't This is only two of many foods you can eat with the thought that you are burning fat just by eating them I have built my whole eating plan around great foods. Even if I overeat I am eating good foods. Example: A extra bite of chicken a extra yogart a extra handful of walnuts etc. So you can see Mary that just eating the right foods will accomplish the fat burning ever if the foods themselves are not fat burners. Also, check out negitive calories foods like celery. It takes more calories to process celery in the body then calories you would get from it. So maybe celery with peanut butter isn't as bad as you may think. You get a vegetable and a protine for those muscles. Don't starve eat And build muscle let the muscle burn the fat while you sleep. You can do it. Take care and keep trying. I like Brian suggesting rowing for you. I like the rower it is one of the most effective exercises you can do. I row at a 500 cal/hr. level. I pretend I am in Boston, Ma rowing for Harvard on the Charles. Very exciting. Cheers JIm Last edited by Chef; 01-12-2009 at 12:02 PM.. |

![]() I do try my best to eat the right kinds of food. I love nuts and I snack on them alot. For Christmas our daughter gave me a big can of pecan halves that she bought at a pecan farm she went to. I love almonds to. I try not to eat to many salted peanuts though. I read alot of health magazines and books to. I am always interested in what up with health these days. Talking about rowing, I have some exercises I do that are to resemble rowing that I do with hand weights. And when our pool water is warm enough to get in i do water exercises that resemble rowing to. I do not have a rowing machine but I do these exercises to keep my shoulders and top part of body in shape. Its still my legs that i need the strength in. Cannot understand why the muscles in them do not want to strengthen much. I have had several back surgeries and it left some numbness in both legs and I had a test at my doctors for muscle tone in my legs and he said I has some muscle loss in them. I have done all the exercise they showed me in rehab and my water exercises to but still the strength in them is not what it should be. It looks like all the exercise I do for them they would be strong. I think it may be a tendon that is making it hard for me to walk sometimes. The one right behing my knees bother me and I thought it was muscle but now I think it may be a tendon or legiment. I am planning on getting my doctor to check it out since my knees are bad to. See you later and have a great afternoon. |

I hope RC or Brian might have some input on why your muscles aren't as strong as you think they should be. I like that you are thinking of rowing when you do a exercise in the pool. I know that if you keep it up you will see results just hang in there and don't give up. I just found out I am also getting prevention magizine there is so many fat burning articles in the issue. Wishing you the best Jim |

Thanks Rich. I try not to be to hard on myself but I just want so much to get my legs stronger so I can walk better.
I do ok with short term walking but walking and staying on my feet for a long time get to me. Sometimes its hard to go out and do the things I want. When we went to the Seafood Festival here in our city I think I sat more than I walked around to look at things. Its things like that, that bother me because I have always been so active all my life until now. I do not remember if I told you or not but in 2002 I had three back surgeries to repair bad disc's and every since then my legs muscles have not been the same. My legs began hurting me before all the surgeries and almost went out on me thats one reason for all the surgeries but they never really got any better afterwards like they should have. Still have alittle numbness in them to on the side of them but alot of that went away with the surgeries. I just pray that I do not have some sort of damge to the muscles. I see my doctor with them again in several weeks so I am going to see if he can run some more tests to find out why the strength has not come back to them like it should had. But I am ok, at least I can walk some so I should not complain about that. But I will try to stop being so hard on myself, promise.. |

Hello everyone,
I hope that all of you are well. I have been away from the gym for some time. I don't want to dissapoint you guys. My dad has been given a month or two to live and I have been traveling back and forth. My wife had developed pneumonia. I have been taking care of our 5 year old and going back and forth to see my dad. The kicker is that now I have pneumonia and I can't even see my dad for a while. My twelve week training has been derailed. Maybe I can catch you guys on the next cycle. I will check in. I still want to get back to the gym when it makes sense to. Best

![]() All is well here in Fla. Our weather has warmed back up to normal again. We got a blast of cold here this last week. Did manage to get on the exercise bike this morning for a few minutes but thats all I have done today in the way of exercise unless you call washing clothes exercise. My low carb is going ok and think I am losing even though I have not weighed yet. I really need to go out and buy myself some good scales. I usually wait until I see my doctor to get weighed but I do not see him until Feb. 11 again. Glad to see everyone doing well. |

I am still here. I have restarted my weight training program for the new year, but have recently had some difficulty scheduling with my workout partner. I worked out last weekend, but with the ice storms we have had to cancel the last two nights.

Nice to hear from you on your weight training program. Best of luck with your plan. I numbed myself from the feet to the waist very bad situation. It has been two weeks today and I am almost 100% better. I used a large stepper machine rather than going all the way down with my feet I was doing a quicl short half step and I guess I was bouncing on my ligaments and gave myself a shocking to the body. I can now walk better and also am getting back to my workout program. I feel as though I lost two weeks so I will do the fat burn part until April then begin the strength building part of the program. I hope RC is OK with all he has going on and can begin again with us here. I think April 1 might also work out for him as he missed the time also. Hi Mary, Hope all is well in FL we have been fighting bad ice and snow for weeks up here. I am just a few hours north of Brian and I am just 1 hour north of RC. I hope your workout is going well and your knees are better. I saw a post you wrote about lettuce and that gave me an idea to make a salad as my lunch for a few weeks. I use a Romain lettuce chopped and add walnuts olive oil onion red pepper and vegetable cheese. Thank for the inspiration. Jim |
