Tracy, form is everything for me. It definitely helps me prevent shin splints; I haven't had any in about a year and a half. Also, when I'm really concentrating on zen running, I try to loosen and lengthen my stride and make absolutely no noise when my feet hit the pavement.

It's a lovely, cool fall day.

Tracy, it is good you looked at your form. I know mine is pretty decent until I am going up hill. Then I tend to be hunched which is bad.

I better go find my IPOD. starting to drizzle too which is fine. Just dug out a cap.

I just did 5 miles. I ran hard and it was basically a tempo run. My 4th and 5th miles were my fastest but overall 9:48 pretty fast for a Monday run for me. I felt like I couldn't do much better so hope my 5K Saturday has the adrenalin to get me under 27 minutes.

I better go get ready for work. I needed to cool down. It was cold for first mile and then I was warm. I think it was under 50 but I was plenty warm once moving.I wish I was one of those people who can wear shorts and singlets no matter the weather. I am not. Although if I am cold I do tend to run my first mile too fast!

Morning...

I'm a bit under the weather. too long of a party weekend and my hormones are totally out of whack. I cannot handle 2x in 15 days. ACK!

I am off today as a rest day. I really need it. Yesterday I went out with a friend and I pushed us a little too hard. Oh well.

Enjoy the costume.

Suzanne - Thank you for the thread start. I try to not make much noise when I hit the pavement (or trails) myself. The weather near me looks to be nice today.

Tracy - Nice run yesterday. It's great your knee wasn't bugging as much.

Deb - Twelve hours - yuck! I think you will kick butt in your 5K.

Jen - Cool costume. I ate a lot at my friend's daughter's birthday party yesterday, but I'm back on track today.

Waves hi to everyone else.

Dean

Hello, everyone!

Today, I'm repeating Week 4 of the 13-week 10K training plan.

5 minute warmup, 6 x (3 minutes running, 2 minutes walking), 5 minute cooldown.

For the first time, I'm going to use my heart rate monitor. I don't like to use it because I need to double up the boob support (sports bra with a sport top), or I end up bruising my forehead when I try to run. Adding the chest strap HRM sometimes binds me too tightly, as I have three elastic bands all overlapping on the same spot. Still, I think it will be good for me to see where my heart rate is, so that I can pace myself better and have a better chance of success at conquering the long distances.

I saw the strangest thing on my run yesterday morning.

There was this guy running with a water bottle in one hand and a bag of potting soil, about 2/3rd's full, in the other hand. And he was wearing head phones.

Bill, DH suggested the potting soil guy was probably keeping balance. Unless it was some other kind of pot based material He might be dumping soil as he drinks water. Makes sense to me. You can't exactly ditch handweights, unless one wanted to use shot bags of diving weights and drop a few balls of lead every time you sip water. But not ecologicially friendly....

Klingon, for every training program I follow, I allow 2 to 4 weeks for injury, illness, or just don't feel like it days. It's nice to be able to be flexible. Been having a lot of those week lately.

Dean, a little extra birthday food probably affects you for about 15 mins. Bet you're size 29 jeans still fit today

My latest thyroid treatment maybe taking affect. I am dragging. Want to nap all the time. Want coffee all the time. Gonna see my endo next week so I can start taking replacement hormones to perk me up again. The good thing is that when I feel like this, I rarely feel hungry. Too tired to contemplate food. AND I have been able to manage to get in my runs, granted not as long or fast as I'd like, but I'm logging some good miles and decent times due to the cooler weather.

Jen, you came pretty close to the broccoli look I imagined even though I can't enlarge the photo. 2 X in 15 days at your age just doesn't sound right. Do you have any other symptoms?

Sounds more interesting than the things I see when I run! All I see are animals. Since we're on an Army base it's a little more protected. There's this particular owl on a bridge who yells at me as I pass by.

Jen-great costume!

KB-I know what you mean..I haven't worn my monitor in a while because I feel all bound up sometimes. Even my teeny ipod (whatever that microscopic one is called) sometimes bugs me. I don't like things jiggling around, even my hair. It's distracting!

Suzanne-you sound like me right now. I always blame it on the weather though. I'll find out Thursday if I can blame it on something medical or not. I'm just tired of being cold constantly.

I'm anxiously awaiting tomorrow. No matter what your affiliation is, I think everyone will breathe a huge sigh of relief. It seems everyone is just antsy and on edge.

Have a good day, all!

Debbie, nice run this morning! Ditto on the body temp, that has recently become an issue for me. Instead of just walking out of the house sweating like a horse, it takes 15 mins or so then I feel overdressed. I might need to start leaving spare clothes (or removing spare clothes) at my water station in front of our townhouse.

DH is leaving tomorrow to go to Puebla in hopes of buying me a new (used but new to me) Honda Odessey! I've been driving a 6 y.o. Ford F150 with super cab, a full length bed, and a 6 ton rear axel gear ration (or something like that) for about a year now. We bought that truck to haul thousands of liters of fuel and haul large boats out of the water. We no longer have boats or haul fuel. Parking in this area is geared toward econo-cars. I feel like the road side whale driver; the tourist-bus drivers hate me when I park in their slots. I'm embarrased to admit how many things I have backed into (you can't see ch!t with a camper shell on the back!) after 30+ years of clean driving.

Hi All,

Today I hit the gym for some weight and ab workouts. Then I ran 56 minutes in the park with one of the Youth Running Club head coaches and later with the kids. I turned out to be a motivator for the head coach because she was getting in the last 5 of her 20 miles for today. She is in training for the Disney Marathon in January. Due to her schedule she ran 15 this morning, but had to defer the last 5 until this afternoon before practice. It was cool helping her along and I felt strong even as I was running her (quicker than mine) pace. I guess we made a good combo - her doing the last few miles of her 20 for her upcoming marathon and me in recovery from mine. It was great because I didn't feel any tightness or soreness afterwards. The rest of the past few weeks and my prior conditioning seem to be coming together.

Bring on the Great Swamp Devil 15K in less than 2 weeks!

Dean

I had a long but productive day. It was REALLY good to sleep in. I kicked my ass running the other day. My friend is getting endurance now and she is damn fast naturally. We did progressions and uh guess what? She beat me! We were holding a real good pace. I am going to pace her at the 10k.

Bill, your running encounter sounds like murder to my halloween costume

okay more personals later. I just got home and had a snack for dinner. now I'm ready for another snack... lol.. it's 8:30pm.

i'm hungry.

more tomorrow morning!

home after a 13 hour work day.

I am a news junkie and excited about the election. I have to get out to vote mid day. I hope the lines aren't hours long. We are running tomorrow night and then coming home to watch election news. Sad about Obama's grandmother.

Love the picture Jen.

Bill, I can't figure out why someone would be running with potting soil.

Well, I don't know what's going on with my lower back getting worse and worse, (this has been going on for literally months, so I know it's not the running), but I'm going to take today off from exercise and see what happens. Will the world stop? LOL! DH felt sorry for me and made me my favorite breakfast-a piece of healthy TJ bread topped with sunflower seed butter and bananas.

I have an absolute TON of work today, as for some reason, everyone in Austin wants plastic surgery lately. Nothing wrong with the economy down there apparently?? At least my breakfast will give me energy to work nonstop!

Happy Tues!

Kris T., have you seen a doctor or chiropractor about your back? My husband scoffs at chiropractors, but I had a friend who was very into running and weights. One of his vertabrae would slip with all the activity, and he would be in severe pain if he didn't go. He said he thought they were quacks when his mom first suggested it, but when he could hardly walk anymore, he gave it a try.

Today, I actually added speed walking to my workout program. I had completely forgotten how much more exhausting it was than regular walking! I decided to do it on a whim, as I was already walking. After 5 minutes, I realized that I wasn't going to be able to do it for the rest of the workout. So, I did intervals. Speed walking for 5 minutes, regular walking for five, upping my speed when I was just walking.

I finished, drenched in sweat. It was awesome! I figure I might keep doing the interval thing, but gradually decreasing my time off speed walking until that's all I'm doing. Might help me ease into it.

All this talk of not knowing how to dress for the weather makes me soooo grateful for the treadmill I got from my husband. It's nice to be able to just throw your shirt onto the garage floor when it gets too hot.

Hi All,

Today I joined the YMCA and swam 25 minutes. I want to add swimming to my regime since it is one of my favorite exercises. In fact, I was a swimmer before a runner and love to do a triathlon in the summer. This will help me keep in shape for the swimming part. I don't get much time to train since the lakes don't open until after Memorial Day and the triathlon I do is in early July. I'd like to add another to the schedule for next year. We'll see.

Ken, I am jealous. We live too far from the nearest pool. So, I run and then cross-train with the elliptical and I'm doing the pushup challenge.

Hi guys. Today was a slack day again. I have off from work for the next few days, so I am saving up for a run tomorrow hopefully.

Dean: I would love to swim, but my eyesight is so bad, that I feel totally weird and blind in a pool. I could try swimming with contacts in, but I'm guessing they'd fall out? Keep up the good work!

Klingon: How's the 100 pushup challenge going? I did 2 weeks of it, then fell off the wagon. I'm such a slacker with weights and stuff like that in the winter. Probably because everyone is all covered up with heavy cloths, so I get lazy!

Deb: Wow, such long shifts. I don't know how you do it!

Kris: This may sound totally dumb, but what type of plastic sugury does one have on your feet? Didn't you say you work for a Pidiotrist? I'm sorry your back is bugging you. Be careful! I ignored mine and ended up spraining my SI joint in my back and it took me out of running for weeks! I am about 2 1/2 hours from Tomah. My Mom and Dad were staying near Fort McCoy a few weeks ago. My BIL was recently medically discharged from the Army.

weststide: Potting soil, hey? I bet he has no idea how many people he has doing this and this .

Suzanne: about driving the truck. I have the exact same problem with our Chevy Suburban. I hope you like your Odessey!

Jen: It ain't easy being green, but you made the best of it! Nice costume!

Whew! Hope I didn't forget anyone. G'Night!

I did a 4.3 mile easy run last night. It was raining but warmer then I realized. I had shorts on but a long sleeve shirt I didn't need. We did the shortest route so we could get home to watch the election. I stayed up until around midnight. I was getting phone calls after 11p from family excited about the election.

Kensbev, intervals are great. That is how I learned to run. I would walk and then run. Does Atlanta get cold???

Dean, swimming is great exercise. A women I run with does Triathalons and she used to be slower then me. Now she is faster. She is much better trained. I am not a swimmer.

Tracy, I wear contact lens. One thing you can do is wear goggles. I just take my lens out when I go in the water in the summer.

Kris, I have a lousy back. I would take a few days off from running and also cut back a day a week. I find 4 days of running is much better then 5 for me. I would also make sure your shoes are good and that your form is good.

I am working 8 hours today. 8 is easy compared to 12. I get to leave at 7pm.

Hi Everyone,

I am swamped at work. It is exciting, but woah. And I am instructing too, so I am organizing things and I'm realizing during winter break I'm going to be designing lectures. I'm still really having hormonal problems now and am not happy about it. I think I'm just unlucky this month and have extended PMS. Fun!

I was in meetings from 9-4pm yesterday. phew. oh and everything is due yesterday. lol.

Well I should get going... I had a nice run yesterday.

Hi all,

I haven't been on this thread for ages.

I finished my first marathon back in early October (ran for charity). Came in a little over 5 hours. Could have done it a lot faster except the lady I was running with had family there and kept stopping to talk

Haven't done much running since then and started a new job a couple of weeks ago, so my weight is creeping up again. And these dark nights don't help for motivation.

@KlingonBabe: Wow. A woman who likes Star Trek AND runs. Where have you been all my life? Oops, I mean "Dak Mal Q'el mak!" (and backhands you across the face).
