Lol, KlingonBabe, I feel your pain on jumping rope! Once upon a time, I decided to add jump roping to my workout. I found out that having a rod in your femur and jumping rope aren't necessarily the best combo.

I don't know how many of you are familiar with this sensation, but I just finished my afternoon workout, and I had the nastiest thing going on in my mouth. Workout dry mouth (cause I forgot my water) PLUS ketosis breath. Yucky!
On the bright side, I accidentally upped my time doing speed walking. I *was* doing 5 minute intervals-- 5 minutes walking normally, 5 minutes speed walking. Today, I decided to up my speed walking by doing it in 1 minute intervals. Just on a whim, more than anything. But I was also thinking that it might make it easier to eventually segue into just speed walking full-time. Except I wasn't paying attention and ended up doing 2:1 (2 minutes speed walking, 1 not) intervals. So, while I would normally speed walk in (4) 5-minute intervals/20 minutes, today I sped walked for a total of 26 minutes. Just another reason to be glad I'm a dufus! ![]() I just found something that I consider amazing, too. They *do* have plastic surgery for feet! Weird. Yo! sign me up! J/K My feet are by far my worst feature, but if I had to have ugly anything, I'll take ugly feet!
![]() I got in a 30 min run today. Knee was doing fine until 20 minutes in, then just a bit of pain. I think once I can build the strength to keep up my form, my knee should get better. Not running related: I had something totally weird happen today. I was walking to the grocery store with my daughter and an elderly woman walks up to me. She tells me that her neighbors moved out 2 weeks ago and left their dog in the kennel in the backyard and no one has been feeding him. WTH! I do not know this woman, but she was obviously distraught. I asked if anyone had been notified and she off-handedly mentioned that the police said they could do nothing about it. (I don't think she called.) Then she kind of shuffled off leaving me with this problem. The yard still has things laying around, but some things are missing and there are no cars around. I tentatively entered their property, I walked past the "Beware of Dog" signs and looked into the kennel. Before he went bezzerk, I did notice that there was no food or water for him and only old "doo" so he must not have gone in awhile. (sorry TMI). So now what? Did they lose their house and leave ol' meanie pants behind? My husband just told me to keep an eye on the place for awhile to see if anyone turns up, but if he really hadn't eaten in 2 weeks, I can't wait a few more days! I called 2 shelters and both are closed on Wednesdays (of course). I am not opening that cage to feed him, so the best I came up with was to call the Sheriff. An officer came and asked me a few questions and said he'd look into it. What happens from here, I don't know. But at least I tried. I just have a feeling that if he is taken by a shelter, he'll be put down. He didn't really seem like the "family" type dog. But I guess it's better to put him down than to let him starve to death. I'll take a walk past tomorrow and see if he's still in there. Why me? ![]()

Hugs for having to deal with that. ![]() Not to change the subject at all (I love animals), but I'm signing up for a turkey trot on the 22nd. Just a 5K. Jen, you should..just think of it as a longer workout.Last edited by Kris T.; 11-05-2008 at 04:36 PM.. |

Today I had a nice 53 minute run along area roads and into trails. The weather called for rain, but I guess it was delayed. Lucky me.
![]() Jen - Surges to 6:30 pace?! I think you would kick butt in a 5K. ![]() Tracy - I think you were smart to let the sheriff handle it. If the dog doesn't seem people friendly, it was best to not try to give him something. Who knows what he might have done. ![]() Klingonbabe - I don't think I would be able to jump enough rope to cause me heal pain. I would probably trip and fall flat on my face before 5 skips of the rope. ![]() ab1ht - Congrats on finishing the first marathon and nice time too! Which one did you run? I ran my first last month in Pennsylvania. It was called The Steamtown Marathon.Deb - I'm hoping the added swimmimg will be helpful when it's traithlon time next summer. The dog situation troubles me as well as I'm a big dog person.
Couple short term suggestions: 1. Throw food into the kennel. 2. Water hose for the water dish? 3. Call the ASPCA? One would think they have a national HQ that could give better advice. Please keep us posted. |

Busy busy thread lately. I'm lovin it!
I finally caught up with the reading here. Bill--as far as the legs, they're strong. I still have problems with the hips but I just do more XTing and less running on days where the pain is really bad. I am certainly stronger than I was before. Yeah, I'd like to run a 5k on Turkey Day. I thought a 10k but I'm not really training toward that, I'd say my schedule has me more trained for a 5k. None on purpose, just the way a crunched schedule goes. How is tapertown? I'm going to Yosemite to play this weekend. ![]() Deb--you run like mad, enjoy your days off! I had to do my rest days really close to eachother this past week. I was doing too many hard workouts and didn't recover. Once I recovered, it was like hello! Oh and I've caught up on sleep after the election. Did you catch up on Z's?Suzanne--I can't imagine you draggy. You just don't seem to me like a person who could ever get that way. I hope your hormones get fixed. As for mine, guess what? It was like a mini TOM and now it's just mild cramping. I think the term is middleschmirtz. Oh goodness I am a stickler for spelling but honestly right now, it's 5am... not gonna do it. Tracy--What did you do about the dog? I'd so lose sleep over that. It would nauseate me. Yup, you could just do what Bill said and take some edge off by feeding the puppy. I am so not fulfilling our promise BTW. I promised someone that i would get a doctor selected and make the phone call this week. The time i'm spending on personals I could be doctor hunting ![]() Dean--you're so ready. I can just feel the mileage and training ripening and consolidating for you. I'm super hyped for your next race. Keep your head cool and be tough. Grr!!! ![]() Klingon-- it's nice to have you here. I would wonder if you need super feet? Sounds like arch-strengthening is something to consider? Regardless, nice workouts lately. How's the pushups going? KrisT--okay last time, what kind of dr. do you work for (sorry to ask again our thread is getting beefy). I am lazy and I haven't made up my mind about which race to do. I promised my friend the 10k. I want to do a 5k. That is unlike me. Normally I hate 5k's. Meh, 10k is better, more calories burned before the turkey! Kensbev-I am an ideal candidate for foot plastic surgery. My feet are ugly and have always been. I was a dancer for 7 years, then a runner there after for about 15 years. So basically I've been beating up my feet for a glorious 22 years now. I am so not materialistic about shoes though. Shoes are not the reason for surgery. bah! As far as dry mouth from working out, I always get that. I always have a dry mouth. Runners need to drink tons of water. I drink about 3 liters a day. Not running related... Life is really good with work. So good. I am super happy. All of that horrible stuff I went through paid off big time. I spend more days happy than not. It's just really awesome. I see career advancement in the future and that's just awesome. ![]() |

Jen, I am so glad all is good with you!!!!
Tracy, update us on the dog situation. as for feet... mine aren't ugly they just get painful. I have no padding in my metarsal area. I hear they can inject collagen but that sounds awfully painful. So I don't wear heals much. I run tonight. I am hitting the gym for the first time in a few weeks. I have been sick and I had some appts scheduled during my Pilates time. I need to get back into my routine. I am also not working anymore Wednesdays for a while. I only did that to make up lost time when I was taking off weekend hours for races and my anniversary. Saturday I have a 5K. I don't do many 5Ks. I have done 1-2 a year and find them the hardest of all races because I have to run my fastest. We are meeting before to warm up. We plan on doing a good 2 miles. They wanted to do more but I will forgo a long run and do less miles this week. The race will be hard enough. Next Saturday we have volunteered for a cross country race. My club is hosting a big USTAF championship cross country meet in Feb. and this is a dry run. It is going to mess up my long run schedule but I can get up early Sunday and run. Or I could run later in the day. I don't know what I will do. I need to keep my base and start increasing my miles by the end of November to prepare for speed development in January. I know with my time off last fall for my back January was really hard on me. I had been running slowly but I really felt horrible the first race I did in January. That is why I am doing a few races between now and January. |

Deb, I am glad too!!! That's why I wanted to tell you all... it was such a laborious and arduous process that PAID OFF. How is your son doing, BTW? I wish Tate were here I could root for her and cheer her on.
What T/F meet are they hosting? Sounds awesome and you'll be inspired when you watch them (in their beautiful bodies). I think laying low from racing is good. I'm not sure anyone ever prescribed a lot of races since they are so intense and tough on the body. How exciting, a short n' sweet 5ker for Debbie this weekend. Ooh I can't wait for the race report. I loved your last report ![]() wow i'm chatty today. I slept over 8 hours last night. ![]() |

No taper yet Jen, I've got this week and next week. I'll start 3 weeks out but not a whole lot the first week.
Yosemite should be great this weekend. I don't know how much snow Yosemite might have received from the recent storms but we have 18 inches on the summit. If you're going to hike, you can probably get up to Little Yosemite Valley but Half Dome may be closed for the season. The days should be warmer by the weekend but it's been cool at night this week. Out for 11-12.

Jen-I work from home actually, but have 3 main doctors..a GP, plastic surgeon & a podiatrist. I'm in CA, my boss is in MI, and the doctors are in TX, TX, and IN. I love working from home.
Are you heading to Yosemite? DH was just saying maybe Monday, since he has the day off as do the kids. We just found out we'll probably be moving this coming summer, so our days here are numbered. Got to start stuffing in the outings! No run today..I get blood drawn to see if I'm hypothyroid. Fun. Deb-good luck on the 5K if I don't get back on before then! Tracy-good luck with the dog. I don't understand how people can treat dogs that way. With all of the moving around we do, if a place won't take pets we look elsewhere. We'd never dream of giving him up, or worse yet, just leaving him. I don't understand that mindset about just leaving pets behind like a piece of furniture. It breaks my heart. I like to think that karma will come back to haunt these types of people someday. Every kid in the neighborhood knows me as the dog lady and is forever showing up at our doorstep with a dog they found roaming the base! At least once a week we have the odd dog in our yard as I try to track the owners down. Unfortunately, being military and moving often, the tags are old. So I've made announcements at the neighborhood meetings that if ever their dog has jumped their fence or gotten out, come to our house first! |

Kris, I hope all goes well at the doctor's.
Tracy, people who abandon pets really get my goat. The worst I could imagine would be surrendering it to a shelter, and even then, that's a last resort measure. Just leaving a poor helpless animal is more than I can fathom. Fitterly, I have learned that I need two things in order to run without mashing up my heels: 1) Very rigid shoes (I use Brooks Adrenaline GTS), and 2) Orthotics (I use Lynco, @ $60/pair, oy). This does manage to protect my feet. The other thing is that I can't really do high impact workouts more than three times per week. So, any training I were to do for longer distance running would have to be extended, because my body does need those days in between to recover. I need to look forward in my training plan, and see whether I might be ready for a 5K Turkey Run on Thanksgiving. I've always wanted to do that, but the one time I was ready (training-wise), Thanksgiving day was a very wet and cold morning, so I skipped it and spent time on the elliptical instead. |

Kris do you know where you will be moving too?? It must be hard to be in the military.
I went to the gym. I hadn't been in 2 weeks because I got sick. I did weights for the first time since Mid September when I started with the tendonitis in my right elbow. I still have some pain there and my shoulder but it is much better. I am hoping the arm weights won't stir things up.I then took Pilates. I have to get back on my schedule of Pilates T/Th and upper body workout on those days. I also want to start lower body again on Wednesdays and there is another Pilates class I can do but I do not like the instructor. |

I just ran across this blog, Zappos Blogs: Running: Running Tips: Take the Day Off when I was looking to see if I was pushing myself too hard or not. I've just been pushing myself as hard as I can for five days, then taking one day off and doing all over again. According to this guy, I should push myself on M-W-F, take it a little easier on T-Th-S and take Sunday off completely.
Does this guy know what he's talking about? I sure hope so, lol, because I could use a day of not working out so hard today! ![]() It just hit me: I can do my weights on days I'm not training so hard. Hmmm... Might work! Last edited by Kensbev; 11-06-2008 at 01:12 PM.. |

It right now depends on so many factors..Alexandria is where we still have a home (renting it out currently), we might get sent there, back to the D.C. area, that is, Germany, Hawaii, Nebraska, Penn (Army War college). Kensbev: I agree with his post. When I first started running in June, I was running everyday. Within 6 weeks, I could hardly walk and I sprained my back because my body was not strong enough to handle that kind of training so soon.
westside gave me some great advice: Once you hit 30 minutes of running, try to run 3 times a week. 2 runs should be shorter (30-35 minutes) and one run is longer (40-45 minutes). Keep this up (weeks or months) until your body is strong enough to increase. (Hope I got that right, Bill!). I still like to do SOMETHING on the opposite days so I do cross train with my elliptical and Pilates or weights. A day of rest always feels kind of funny (like when you leave the house and realize you forgot to put on deodorant ) but they are just as important! ![]() |

I got 30 minutes on the elliptical today. I’m glad I ran yesterday because today was rainy and very windy!
Kris: I wish my sister handled the moving as well as you! She stayed with my parents while her DH served in Iraq and then went out to Washington when he came back. She griped about the rain constantly! He was transferred to Tennessee (or was it Kentucky, I’m not sure) and she was suppose to go down there as well, but he broke his back and was discharged before she got down there. Deb: I noticed that you weren’t going to the gym as much. I think holding off was the right move with that arm of yours. I remember how much pain you were in, we don’t need any more of that! I know what you mean about the Instructors. My friend skips days as well due to an Instructor she can’t tolerate. Jen: I am glad you are feeling stronger. I haven’t made any appointments either. I know it would only help, and my insurance will cover it ... but I have no spare time! When am I suppose to fit PT into my day? Hi Paul: Welcome to the board! That is so cool that you got your first marathon in. If the weight is starting to creep up on you, do you think running on Saturdays again would help? I love my weekend runs! *** I checked on Killer today. ![]() I can tell that someone has been in his cage. It has been cleaned up and the shovel propped up against the wall. His bowls were empty, but now sitting against the side like he probably ate it all up. I feel really weird even going there because I have no idea if they really left or not ... I have a feeling that maybe they are in transition to leaving, and someone is stopping by to feed him and the neighbor lady is just not seeing them. It's a strange situation, so I am just going to observe from afar from now on. I don't need any issues with trespassing. Waves HI to everyone else! ![]() Last edited by I'llBeFrank; 11-06-2008 at 04:27 PM.. |
