Congratulations on your improvements and inch losses. That IS very exciting!! And thanks for telling me about it!
Hi Dreamchaser! My understanding is that Callanetics works the deepest layer of muscles, which, as they tone, push out the fat that's in there. And, as the muscles lift, all the pushed out flab moves up from the bottom and down from the top, and meets in the middle, creating temporary flabbiness on our bums and abs. Our muscles pull in as we continue to work, which pulls in the flab as well, and, our stronger muscles increase our metabolic rate which burns up the fat.

Some people actually experience their clothes getting tighter - I never did. My upper torso has leaned out very quickly, and my lower abs are lagging behind, that's all. Callan's book "10 Years Younger in 10 Hours" addresses this issue. She talks about how even she experienced changes that upset her - she says she cut out sugar and drank a lot of water, and the cellulite was gone in 6 weeks! We should all be so lucky!

The cellulite thing happens whenever the muscels get toned, just it works so fast with Callanetics that it can be really conspicous. Callanetics doesn't make the fat dissapear- not that fast anyway. As far as fat goes, more muscle burns more fat (and you burn a little doing the workout). But, as Callan wrote, you can't do the excercise, eat bad and expect great results as far as you figure goes.

I changed quickly and no cellulite- never had a problem with that though. If it's there, it may look a bit more conspicous on top of those tightening muscles. But you will stil pull in quite a lot if your muscles aren't trained I would think. Go for it!

I want to do Super C tonight- - you guys think that's okay if I try even though I only did about 20 hrs of Callanetics? I thought I just don't do what I can't. But I still fondly remember starting out with 10/10, not being able to lift my leg...

Anyone else have trouble with the hip exercises where you sit on the floor, hold the bar, turn the hip forward and raise the leg off the ground? I have trouble even getting it off the ground; I have to lean WAY over!

Here I thought I was the only one I'm getting better though, slowly coming up off the floor a bit. That's the only one I seem to have a problem with.

I posted an awful example of that exercise a couple of pages back just to try to communicate what position I was trying to do!

I tried it leaning over further and stretching out through the neck to keep my spine in line and my leg came up so much more easily!

I'm slightly concerned that the thigh muscles are working there, not my bum... and it feels like my bum should be pulling my leg back instead, is that right? All the tension seems to be in my thigh whether my leg is straight or bent

I still cannot get over the changes my body is going through. Just one week from today my belly is shrinking . The fat in my abdomen is slowly meeting in the middle, and going away. There is one shirt that fits snug, but my arms are more toned, my thighs are slimming. I look so much better in my clothes. I still have lumps, but the lumps look a whole lot better .

Your thigh muscles will be working here but try to relax them. You should be concentrating on your hip and bum. Give your bum a poke to check it's working. It will be the side and upper bum that's doing must of the work. When the leg is straight make sure it is rolled over as much as possible so the knee is aiming more into the floor rather than the ceiling. That way you won't be using your thigh muscles so much. Does that make sense? With time you will learn how to relax your body and concentrate all your energy into the muscle group you are working. It happens naturally over time.

I also jump rope. You'll burn a lot of calories in a short amout of time. In ten minutes jumping rope, I'll burn about 200 calories. Add callanetics and burn over 400 calories.

Another hour of10/10 tonight...20 hours of callanetics.

I'm so....thrilled? I guess. All the chub in my hips seems to be going to my tummy, BUT my tummy looks a little smaller! The chub above my belly button seems to be arranging itself into the shape of a full on two pack! It's still soft to touch but theres a distinct line down the center.
has anyone else experienced something similar?

Oh..And one side of my body is tightening quicker than the other side...Only noticeable to me. Is this common?

I just did the tummy exercises and will do 10/10 tonight

Hi LOL yes I have this flabby 2 pack with the line its funny to hear someone else describe it, I always imagine if i can finally eat better the fat might go away to reveal a 6 pack

I also feel one side is getting more benefit, i feel the stretches trying to unknot my shoulders and back, but one side seems to be more receptive and i can go farther, maybe its just a matter of that?

That is so funny - I, too, have described my upper belly as a "two-pack"...it used to have, like, a full-on chub roll, but it's nice and flat now.

Ha! I noticed the two pack for the first time yesterday night and am soo proud of it! That must mean something good!

I did an hour (?) of Super last night and it was great to have that challenge again. I FORGOT how it feels to not be able to lift that leg and there we go and then some. It made me laugh.

Anyway, I loved it even though I wished she would explain the excercises right when you do it, I can't remember everythign she sais at the biginning, nor do i have time to watch that segment everytime. And when they do it, the camera ften is on the face of Gerorge or Lane instead of on the feet-

20. I have about 40 pounds to lose, so I did not see any results until after 15 sessions. But people at work saw a difference before I did. Some said my face was slimmer, which I did notice, but my clothes were not fitting, so it was frustrating at first. I want to buy new clothes so, so, bad, but I need to wait.

Ditto...I going through the same thing...like the fat is going to the center of my body. I'm not going through one side tightening quicker, I am more toned, more compact. Keep up the good work.

ben, don't you also have the south african callanetics dvds? how do you like them, and are they true to the callanetics concepts as we know them? i was looking on their website and their versions of the exercises seem interesting and worth trying, but it is a little disconcerting that tracy hebron is not exactly the epitome of the long and lean that we're all aspiring to...

Yes I have all the South African Callanetics DVDs. They are ok but really quite different to the American DVDs. The production value is really low so they are not so nice to watch. I don't do them anymore as I think the American DVDs are better and the results are faster. But they are nice to have if you get bored and want a bit of variety. They have one where you use a ball and bands which is quite fun but I wouldn't call it Callanetics. The other ones are a little bit similar to CallaneticsEvolution but there are also a lot of different exercises that don't really follow the original Callanetics concepts. I did the mini-routine for the upper body and it actually hurt my back. It didn't hurt the next morning but I had to stop half way through the exercises as it got too much. Maybe it was just because I was weak in the upper body. I am usually quite clued up as far as what my body is doing but during that routine I just couldn't figure out how to stop the pain.

There is a German book called "New Callanetics" which is absolutely fantastic. The exercises are brilliant. It's from 1996 and is what they were using in Callanetics studios before CallaneticsEvolution. I love it and if I get bored of 10/10 or Evolution then I do that one. I guess the first South African DVD is based on that book so it might be worth a try for some people.

At the end of the day it comes down to personal taste. If you want a bit of variety then you should get the South African DVDs. There are a couple of great stomach exercises in them which I do all the time now. They are so boring to watch but don't let that put you off too much.

Tracy Hebron isn't actually in any of the DVDs. It's a woman called Sylvie Lampe. She has a very strong and tight body but I think most people would prefer the body shape you get from CallaneticsEvolution (think of beautifully Sandra).

Does that help? So to sum it up, it is Callanetics but not as we know it!
