I'm just heading downstairs now to hit the TM for 50 minutes. I have a new iPod playlist called "Workout" and it is full of high-energy songs (VERY helpful to me). I'm SO lucky to have a free gym at my disposal!

...aaaaannnd I'm back. Takes me two minutes to return the gym key to the security desk and head back up to my condo. 3.2 miles in 50 minutes, at varying inclines between 2.0 and 5.0 (the 5.0 only lasted for one song, that is exhausting!). Then I take the stairs instead of the elevator (only 5 floors, but after 3 floors, I am panting!). I am dripping sweat as I type, but I've never felt better!

The whole time I was off plan and not excercising, I would say to myself, "You have a FREE gym at your disposal, right in your building! Why not use it?!?" - Foolishness and laziness is why. But that has changed.

Tate - Thank you for the thread start.

Canada Boy - Good for you to have a free gym and great workout.

I changed my avatar to a after race photo of me taken by a friend. In addition, she also got one of me going under the pavilion heading to the finish.

I ran a 50k yesterday but events took a turn for the worse. This was a very difficult course and the temps may have reached 100+ in the small, sunny canyons. It was officially 97 in nearby Livermore yesterday.

Anyway, at around mile 17, I was climbing/walking a hill with another runner when we noticed someone hunched down on all fours in the tall grass about 30 feet off the trail and around 60-75 feet ahead of us. At first it look like he was puking but immediatley he stood up but before getting completely upright he staggered backwards, downhill and then went into a tumble. We had to run to catch him and stop him. He struggled for a few moments and when we turned him over his face was almost blue. He went unconcious but he was still breathing although shallow. We were on an exposed, sunny hillside but within minutes, we were able to gather more runners and create shade around him and douse him with water.

I was able to snag a cell phone from a couple of hikers and got Santa Clara 911 and I was able to give our approximate location on the Ohlone Wilderness Trail and within 25 minutes or so an East Bay Regional Park Police helicopter came with an EMT. They worked on him for a while and had placed him on a stretcher. We were about to carry the man to the helicopter when a life flight unit from Stanford Hospital was about 4-8 minutes out. The police waited for life flight and when life flight arrived they worked on the man some more before evacuating him.

He never regained conciousness while out there and I heard, through rumor that late yesterday they were going to perform a CT.

The man is 39 years old and I looked up his name on the race database. It show he ran 2 half marathon and a marathon. That doesn't nescessarily mean anything but this could have been his first 50k and the course if very difficult.

Bill - That is really something about the man in the race. Great job trying to help him and calling 911.

Today I ran 47 minutes around town hitting a few hills. For the most part, I felt good and not too beat up from yesterday's race.

cold, rainy blah day and I need to go buy a new router.

I will come back later and respond to posts.

wow Bill that was quite a story and I sure hope this man didn't have permanent brain damage. Actually he could have all kinds of issues including kidney damage if he had enough muscle break down. He was so lucky to be seen by you.

I still had some computer issues yesterday. I need a new router but we have one for Verizon Fios and they don't have them at Circuit City or Best Buy. I can get computer but no one can do the wireless in the house.

So what have I done this week. I ran 5 slow miles Monday and 5 plus yesterday. I start Half Marathon Training with an orientation tonight. I work tomorrow instead of Friday since we are going away this weekend. Our plan is to run along the canal bike/running path at least one day over the weekend. We are doing alot of driving and won't have a huge amount of time there since we come back Monday. I have to spend time with my dad and my MIL who is failing mentally. Then my brother is coming in from San Francisco for a wedding and he moved his reservations so he could see me Monday. Not sure I can take the time to run unless we are up bright and early. Oh well it is early enough in the training I can manage with what ever I can do.

We are supposed to dress in workout clothes tonight but not sure what we will do.

Hope you are all doing well.

A guy I work with is supposed to be running across the Grand Canyon this week buy his MS has flared up again. He told me is still going even if he has to walk. I think he is there now. He is really an inspiration.

I've been kind of quiet cleaning up a bunch of work issues. Actually, I've been working a lot lately.

We, the Ohlone runners got an email from Rob the race director today. It looks like Steve is going to recover. He gets out of ICU today. It was touch and go for the first 24 hours. He was on a ventilator till Tuesday morning but is now breathing on his own, eating and regaining his sense of humor. The doctors said he probably would not have survied if he was not in his condition due to being a runner. Debbie, I was just the first runner to see him fall but all the other runners passing by stayed to help until there were just too many runners helping out. But it's an ultra so were talking about a runner or two coming by about every 2-4 minutes. Here are some pics that were taken by the guys who lent us their cell phone.

Tate - Great treddy and weight workouts. Are you in training for a race?

Deb - I'm sure you will do great with your training and the half marathon.

Bill - I'm glad Steve is going to be okay.

Today I ran 55 minutes in trails and area roads. It was a gorgeous day with temps in the late 50's. At one point it rained, but only for about a minute. Then the sun was out again.

Nope. Just hanging out, doing my thing. My legs were pretty whipped tonight, so I just went for a walk.

Bill, those pictures of the rescue are really amazing.

Dean, the 50s are really ideal running temps.

Tate, I always feel like the treadmill is harder on my legs. I think my stride is totally different.

I went to orientation and short workout. I mean 2.5 miles short. It was nice seeing people I haven't seen in a while. The orientation was interesting. Mary the coach is only planning 3 workouts a week and a 4th if we are more experienced. She wants us to cross train. The workouts are Tempo on Monday. Track and Hill workouts alternating on Wednesday and Long runs on Saturday. She says we can add a slow easy run Fridays. I don't run Fridays because of work and I want fresh legs for Saturday's long run. I will do it Thursday night. I am trying to figure out how I can cross train on Tuesdays. I guess I can do the elliptical when I am there for Pilates and weights. They want 40 minutes of intensity. I will walk when every one run Tuesday night I guess. They want us to rest after each hard workout. They haven't posted the whole workout schedule or the pace groups yet. I want to try to do what the schedule says. My husband and one of my friends have already told me they will do what they do.

Bill - what a story - wow. Thank God you guys helped him out ... you may have saved his life!!! Please keep us posted on his recovery.

Deb - is this it? Are you going to do a 1/2 mary??? Did I miss the announcement?? Which one have you picked (if I'm not jumping the gun?)

Tate - great workouts - how's raquetball going for you?

Dean - I'm so jealous of your weather already - not a fan of heat, here I wish we had the cool weather you have right now. How did your race go?? Great pictures!!!

I've only got 1 10-miler in the bag for this week but plan on fixing that tomorrow I have the foot pod for my new Garmin 405 so I am going to use that on the treddy tomorrow night. It's only 95% accurate until I calibrate it on a track, though, so I am going to do that ASAP.

Kathryn

I have done two half marathons. I have one that will be a training run in July because it is hot and hilly and I did it last year as a training run and it was when all my issues started with my back. The other is a club race called Parks Half Marathon. It is local and not huge like the big races in DC. I am doing the training again mostly to keep me training for something and to have people to run with especially on the long runs. We will get up to 16 miles. Last year we cut our 16 miler short because of severe heat. I think my longest was 15 miles last year. My half marathon wasn't as good as it should have been due to my back. I was not even sure I would run the race the week before but I had a massage and tried to visualize a pain free run and was great for the first 7-8 miles. The rest got more difficult due to pain but I finished and did it at 9:58 pace. I am aiming for 9:30 pace now. I did Cherry Blossom 10 miler in 9:25 pace and with three more miles I should be able to accomplish this goal. The difference is weather we train in and the race day is in September and could be warm. It was kind of cool last year at the start.

Okay, Debbie - why can't I get that to stick in my head?? I keep thinking that you *haven't* done a 1/2 marathon for some reason...

Your 1/2 marathon training goes up to 16 miles? Or do you do that with those training for the full?

You really are whittling your pace back down - I'm so impressed. I know how hard that is when you've injured.

Our half training gets up to 16 miles if we are in the blue group. I was in the blue group last year. Not sure where I will be this year. Honestly her training program is all about less miles and intense workouts three days a week. Then there are cross training days. I am going to tweak her workouts because of my scheduling needs. I will run 4 days 3 will be hard and one easy and then cross train on one day I would normally run. It really bothers me because I hate giving up Tuesday night runs with my friends. I will power walk so that could even be my cross training. I haven't figured it out yet.

Kathryn, glad to see you back here. Do you like your new Garmin? My 305 doesn't work in the gym. Otherwise it is fine for my needs.

I am off to work. I am running tomorrow since I am off. I am not sure if I can do a long run Saturday since we are travelling so I am aiming for 6 tomorrow since that is where we start with long runs next week. I have been doing 8s for the last month.

I love my 405 so far ... it picks up the satellites super-quick; something my 205 didn't like to do. Even in flat, sunny FL my 205 liked to take its sweet time "locking in" as my running buds and I call it.

I got the foot pod on Tuesday and I won't be able to calibrate it until I can get to a track, but I do plan to try to use it on the treadmill tonight. It's only 95% accurate until it's calibrated (once it is, it's 98%). You know I'm such a dork that that 3% really matters to me, LOL!!!

Hope work goes well!! I know you never know what kind of day it's going to be!

Kathryn

Hi Kathryn - I did well in my race Sunday. My time was 22:06 (7:06 per mile pace). I came in 30th out of well over 100 runners (183 finishers including walkers). In addition, I took 3rd in my age group (Men 40-49) out of 20. It was a good race despite strong pollen counts which hampered my breathing here and there.

Today I hit the gym and then ran 55 minutes in the trails. It was a perfect day with temperatures in the 50's and windy.

Today I ran 57 minutes in the trail leading to farm country. The weather was beautiful with temps in the 60's and a little wind. I had to stop twice to walk past horses since the trail was not too wide and I didn't want to spook the horses. It was a great day to be in the great outdoors.
