Running shoes??

Hi all!

I just started the couch to 5k running program and I'm digging it! However, my "running shoes" are from Payless and I'm afraid I could be doing myself a disservice by not having better shoes. How important is it to have good running shoes? Can anyone reccommend a pair? There is a running store in our area but I'm embarassed to go in! I'm afraid they'll laugh at this big ole body trying to run!

First of all, they won't laugh. Any real athlete would be THRILLED to see you there.

I lost 70 pounds on Atkins several years ago (see pics). I bought pricey running shoes for my running then.

My Mom bought me a pair of Walmart running shoes when I mentioned running again a few months ago. I've been running on them exclusively for the last month and I haven't had any trouble at all.

It depends on your gait. I "underpronate" so I can get away with cheaper shoes. Overpronators (many runners, especially women) require special shoes to deal with that, but I can get away with a decent amount of padding.

I would ask you this - are you having any unusual joint pains or pain in your feet after your runs? If you are, go to the running store.

I swear by Brookes, best brand of running shoe I ever bought.

Heather: thanks! I don't have any unusual joint pains, but I do have ankle issues from an old injury.

Alcmene: I've never heard of Brooke's, I'll check them out!

Absolutely go into the running store. They will evaluate your stride and fit you accordingly. Trust me, no one will laugh at you. They will not push any certain shoe (say based on $) just get the right one for you. It's the best investment I have made since I started running.

I also reccommend going to a running store and have them help you out. Good job deciding to run!

I wanted to weigh in on the running store as well. Years ago when I gained a little weight, I started running to get my weight down. I developed very bad heel spurs. That occurred partially because of the weight I gained and with all the running, the other part is I needed a shoe that would provide the right support for my heel. I use the New Balance store. I overpronate and I need the heel support so I use the motion control shoes. Believe it or not now that I am heavy than I was years ago I don't have that discomfort.

Thanks, everyone. As soon as I get a little extra cash, I am going to go to the running store and get their advice
