I would really like to do this every other day, but i'm afraid i'll have to work myself up to that! lol

Hi,

Most of us carry tension in our neck and shoulders and when you start to stretch that area it can create discomfort as the tension releases. This is so normal and students who don't have neck issues generally go through the same thing when they first start classes.

Taking breathers helps and so does placing your hands behind your head/neck. Make sure that you don't allow your elbows to pull forward placing more stress on the neck. Allow your head to sink heavily in to your hands.

Stay rounded up though as much as you can.

You can also place a firm pillow under your mid back to help you stay rounded up.

You can also let your hands hold on gently to the back of your legs keeping the elbows out to the side.

Remember to focus on letting the abs take control of the movement. Keeping your focus on the movement coming from the abs will help with neck issues.

Time and regular workouts will resolve this. As your abs strengthen and your neck gently stretches this will no longer be a problem for you.

Good luck

PlanetBen, I have a question for you (since you also do QS) ~ on the Open & Close ~ is it OK to literally do that one w/ my legs just scooting back & forth on the floor? Seems like I'm still getting some benefit since I can "feel it" ~ would you agree?

There is just no way (right now) I can do those w/ legs in the air ~ my tummy is a mess from 4 surgeries; 50+ paracentesis; and resulting surgical/ascites hernias ~ sigh. No more bikini's for me. And boy was my Mom PO'd re: the way they messed up my beautiful belly button since she paid so much $$$ to get it that way when I was young!

I am so grateful for Callanetics, it is truly the zero impact ab exercise that I really need.

Hi,

Try keeping your knees bent until your abs are strong enough. Once they are up and bent you can try to straightening them a little. This also helps if you feel any impact in your low back.

Callan does say that everyone starts with the legs brushing along the floor so I wouldn't worry too much. After your surgeries it's probably good to take it very slowly anyway, and this is one of the most demanding exercises. You could, however, try them with your legs bent. You bring your knees into your chest and then lift your toes off the floor with your legs still bent. Then open and close in that position. Each day you can straighten your legs out a little bit more. It gives you a bit more control and eases up the pressure. Let me know if that works.

I should remember to read through all posts before I answer - most times they've already been dealt with.

We certainly do! I remember reading that Callan came to Buckingham Palace to teach Fergie (the Duchess of York). And of course there was Barbra Streisand too! I'm sure a few of today's celebs would just love it.

Just popping in so I don't get too behind and also I have a quick question.

Does anyone know how many calories Callanetics burns, the 10 in 10?

Good luck Ben! If you stay in London maybe the next time DH and I go to England to visit his family I can pop in on a class.

Connie (still gimping around) (only 13 days til the cast comes off, but whos counting)

Bette Midler was also a fan and Kiri Tekahana (spel ?) would drop in to the Chicago Studio to get toned up for a concert.

Enjoy the resting period Connie for in 13 days you are back baby

I'll tell you something funny; I teach a group of 17/18 years old at a local College. They love it and very quickly getting addicted. Anyway, one of the girls rocks up to class last Friday decked out in a bright stripped leotard complete with shocking pink tights and matching headband. It was hysterical. The leotard was a thonged one also. She looked as though she'd stepped right out of 10/10.

She reckoned that she worked out better in the get up and felt her muscles work deeper.

She's organised a group of skeptics to come to my studio tomorrow for a class (the skeptics don't reckon it is as hard or challenging as the girls say). Anyway, she's going to wear her 80's gear for me so that I can take a pic.

I should work out how to download pics on here and load it up. You'll love it.

Hi Shelagh,

Welcome to the challenge. Keep visiting this site as you'll get heaps of support and questions answered. This will help keep you motivated and moving forward.

For now though - work at your own pace. Study the form of the demonstrators and gradually increase your reps with each session. Also, try to work out at least every 3 days to keep the muscles changing shape. This works best in the beginning. Any queries just ask away as there are many on this site who have been practising Callanetics for a while and have great advise and experiences with the program.

Hi Noreen,
Great beginning! I'll look forward to checking back often to see what changes you've made. By the way, my mom's maiden name is Finley, maybe we're related somewhere along the line.

Great job Noreen!
I like it!
Iīve beeen doing a few personal and professional websites so I have some tips: I really like your personal story there and I think it would be good if you have a pic of yourself there to present yourself. Also in this section maybe you could explain more about the difference between Callanetics and other forms of excersise. As you say, your weight training caused you to become bulky, but here you can explain more that Callanetics gives everybody a long, lean look.
On the other page maybe you can elaborate more about Callan herself, the story behind Callanetics, how popular it became in the 80īs and then sadly quite forgotten by the masses (but not of us!) and also have a picture of Callan.
I like the photos and I think itīs a great idea to have before and after pictures of your students there also.
Itīs great that you will have timetables etc on it. When you start having classes its inspirational to also have your students testimonials on it.
Hope this helps!

I still am trying to find out how many calories are burned during callanetics. I googled it and can not find any answers. Can anyone help. The reason I am asking is because I want to make sure I am eating less calories than I am burning, but not so few that I am starving myself.

Thanks

Just completed Super Hour 281.

It had been about 4-5 days since I'd done Callanetics, and I hate it when I allow that much time in between. But I'm always rewarded when I return, because my form seems at its best, and the after effects are nothing short of an

AFTERGLOW.

Love it.
I'm behind in reading posts.

Noreen, I'll have to check out your website and get back.

Lucky, great avatar! Beautiful! And very good suggestions to Noreen!

Happy Loser, glad you're addicted -- it's the best addiction in the world!

I would not recommend doing 10 in 10 twice a day.

I would strive for 3-4 x a week. Allow your muscles to heal/recover for best results.
