Good one Ben, Always, always, keep your navel and abdominals drawn down in towards the spine when training abs. This engages more muscle fibres to flatten and tone.

When I train my abs I have my navel drawn down and I then focus on lengthening out from the PF - some students work well with the 'zipping up' visual - like in the 70's when we'd lie on the bed in our tightest of tight jeans and try to zip them up. Wayyyy before your time I think Ben HOwever, you don't need to contract your abs or suck them in In class I sometimes will say to imagine that your navel is a treasure chest filled with golden goodie and allow it to sink down towards the floor of the ocean/spine.

Also, check that when you lengthen out/zip up abs that you don't allow your shoulders to hunch up. Keep your shoulder blades down to the hips and wide/broad and, of course relaxed. Your neck wants to be long and open and soft.

did 1 hr 10/10 last night.

Thank Twyla for that reminder. I'm guilty of not drinking enough water.

Hi Trish,

As far as I know, all the Callanetics dvds are region free so they will work on your UK dvd player. You can order them from amazon.com (US site) and they will deliver to the UK. Even though it says they are region 1 only, I'm sure they're not.

Hope that helps,

That's right, they work anywhere in the world. I think Amazon just say that to protect themselves incase there is a problem. I have the whole collection and they all work fine.

I love those visualizations. Back in the early 90s I took classes at the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance in New York. The teachers were so inspiring and they would use visualizations like that to get you to really understand the exercises. I remember one exercise where you would be leaning forward and pretending to look over the edge of a cliff. Arrrhhh the memories...it was like a revelation!!

This thread is really long so I will try and get caught up, just wondering if I can join in here. I have already completed 3 hoursof 10 in 10 .
I do have a question. I was a dancer, back when I weighed 150 and I am finding that I can get through the whole hour in one shot, is it ok if I do this daily, the first day I was a little sore and the next hour it was fine. I read the thread about being sore or not really not meaning how well you worked out, but I was wondering if I am comfortable is it ok to do an hour everyday??? This seems to be the only form of excercise that I actually enjoy right now and look fwd to doing.

Been under the weather since about Friday and have had no energy to do nothing and I do mean nothing. I was hoping to complete my 10 plus more for the month of May but I will be doing good to get my 10 in. For people who know me they know I am sick when I am not exercising. I hope to get back on track soon.

Hi ummrashid!
If you are comfortable doing the 1 hour program every day then GO FOR IT! You might though want to knock it back to 3x a week if you if that you are getting bored in your routine, also you will see better, quicker results doing it 3x a week.
Its really up to you and your comfort level.

Why do you get quicker results only doing it 3x a week rather than 6x a week?

Kathy,
the muscles get the chance to repair themselves, when you do it 6x a week you don't allow the muscles enough healing time.

I agree with Noreen on the muscle recovery = effectiveness thing.

I personally never do Callanetics more than 4 x a week.

I think 3-4 times is the best approach.

What if I did spinning 6x a week, callanetics 4x a week, and taebo 3x a week and pilates 4x a week? Is that too much? I'd have one recovery day.....

I gotta lose 10lbs asap! lol

I completed another hour last night. An observation I had is even though the outer layers of my body are kind of mushy in spots, they are tight and hard underneath. It is correct to assume that it's muscles pulling in that I feel? Obviously, I will never look the same at 140-150 as I did when I was 21 (having been 100 lbs overweight) but I have to say that I'm inspired that there is something beautiful under the 'goosh'

I generally do Callanetics Mon - Thurs, walk Mon-Fri (and sometimes Sun) and upper body resistance (Joyce Vedral) on Tue & Thurs.

I agree because I see more results doing callan 3x a week compared to before when I was doing it 5-6x a week

Along with The hot bodies on this board like Twyla and Noreen. This is also my inspiration. She has a sick body. Can Callan help bring this on??

I have to start doing this becaues my upper abs are flat. I have a 2 pack but my lower abs/sides are mushy. I need some more definition because I feel those muscles underneath

Im going thru the same thing Bronwyn. Im sure with more sessions we will start to see more definition. But it feels good to at least feel what Callan is doing for us and before you know it we will be seeing it!!

I first discovered Callanetics in 1992 I think. I wanted to be a dancer and I used Callanetics to get me flexible and strong. Then I didn't do it for years. I guess when I hit 30 (I'm 33 now) I started getting really out of shape and I stopped being able to eat what I wanted. So I turned to Callanetics again and it sorted my body out. I did a lot of travelling last year and ending up getting really fat. It was at that point that I decided I needed to do Callanetics seriously again. I'm nearly back to the way I was and my stomach is the last area to get in shape. I know now that I will never let myself get out of shape again.
