Does anyone know the best exercise for arthritic knees?
I have arthritis in my knees real bad and was just wondering what exercise would be best for them without hurting them .
I do water exercise now in the pool and occassionally ride my stationary exercise bike but thats all I do because walking is to hard for me. But it seems like my knees hurt no matter what exercise I do. I need to build up the muscles in my lower part of my legs to along with my knees. My doctor tells me the water exercises is best but I have been doing it for years and my knees are only getting worse.

Hi Mary, I also have problems with my knees. I was fortunate to join a gym that had a TRS 4000 Recumbent Crosstrainer, made by NuStep. This machine provides a total body workout. You can check it out at their website (nustep dot com). I love this machine. maybe you can call and ask at gyms near you if they have one and try it out.

Pcola Girl,
You might have good luck with Power of 10 (Amazon link: or Slow Burn (Amazon link: It's also known as Super Slow, but the Super Slow book is a research manual and not a how-to guide for people. Of course, I would get the book from the library first instead of buying it. I only put the Amazon link there because Amazon has a nice summary and reviews. It's strength training in which you move the resistance up and down for 10 seconds in each direction, while breathing normally ( whatever you do, do not hold your breath ). The really slow movement seems to protect your joints better. I don't know if it will work for you. I have over-use injuries in my right knee and right shoulder from too much weight lifting in college. If I do any exercise routine except Slow Burn (or Power of 10 or Super Slow ) for more than a few weeks, my shoulder and knee start to hurt all of the time and crackle when they move. But with the slow exercises, I've been able to work out consistently, without skipping a workout, and with absolutely no pain, for years. Either way, good luck. Thanks for all your input. I went swimming and did some exercises this morning in our pool and that felt good.
We are planning on getting a hot tub soon so I can soak in that, my doctor reccommended it but my insurance will not pay any on it so it will cost us alittle fortune to get it but I guess it will be worth it. Will check out that monthly challenge thread. |
