Tearing up the Track, Trail or Treadmill,4/21(Boston Marathon Day) -4/27

The beginning of another week here. Today is the Boston Marathon. Just think of all the runners preparing right now. I think their weather is much better then last year. It is raining here.

This is my last week of my speed development training. Our goal race is Sunday.

I have to get son going for school so I may get back here after. I should run but my husband wants to run with me Wednesday since he is taking the day off. I may skip today and get my easy run in Wednesday. I do that some weeks. I will be more rested Wednesday. I really don't want to do anything hard this week. Our track workout is 800x3 at race pace tomorrow with a warm up and cool down so not hard at all.

Wow, we have satellite TV here (we don't have TV in civilization) so I may be able to catch some of Boston. Unfortunately I have to teach a scuba course in a few minutes, something I haven't done since I got pregnant with DD over 4 years ago.

Ran for 30 mins, got a really late start....today I went into town and discovered that the best surface of hard packed sand is along the beach in town. There is one mile with lots of wind and no jungle blocking the ocean view. It's almost as boring as the 2 mile circle at home but a better view.

Off to teach...BBL

Hi all. I'm trying to get some miles in while on vacation. It was simple in Vegas, we walked everywhere, plus they have great treadmills at the Canyon Ranch Spa. (duh)
It's not so easy in Wickenburg, AZ. I'm going to walk to the jail tree later. Ever been? So my miles are pretty much shot for the week, my food is totally gone to hell, but I am still a non-smoker.

Micki, staying away from the smokes is the most important thing right now. My biggest motivation is that I never want to go through quitting again. There DOES come a point when you can't believe you were ever a smoker, when you can't stand the smell (99% of the time and you can resist the 1% if the time that it suddenly smells like a great thing to do), and when you can breathe deeply and feel how much healthier you have become. And if you have young kids it's so nice when they stop picking up cigarette butts in the street and giving them to you as "presents". WTG on the 90 miles!

Couldn't find any info on Boston on Sky TV (I'm a TV dunce) so guess I'll go check internet results.

Had a nice practice dive with my student today and felt like a dolphin considering how long it's been since I put a tank on my back. It brought back a lot of memories of how I became so addicted to diving almost 10 years ago and how I ended up living in this remote fishing village for 7 years. Diving is not anything like running and I do not consider it exercise except for hauling the equipment around. It weighs a lot more than a pair of tennies. But the tranquility of the almost total silence with just the sound of your own bubbles....Tomorrow I have to lead an all day trip to the Banco Chinchorro atoll. And I probably have to guide the same trip the following day; we are really short handed with one instructor/divemaster out with knee surgery, DH doing computers, the manager on vacation, and our buyer/current instructor not being registered to lead trips in the biosphere. My dermatologist is going to be really bummed out....no matter how much sunscreen I use or how long I keep my wet suit on, there is no way to be on a boat all day and not get sunburned somewhere. But I'll do my best to enjoy it because these may well be my last trips for a long time. And I'll get a good work out hauling equipment and divers out of the water all day. My biggest curiousity is to see how running has affected my air consumption....usually when you don't dive for a year or two, your consumption goes way up. Today I was so relaxed and my breathing felt very easy. But only a real dive at depth will show the difference. Off to bed, this old diver needs a good night's sleep.

WOE: I beg your pardon.
A runner became lost yesterday while out on a training run on the Western States Trail. They had to call search and rescue and a California Highway Patrol helicopter found him around 9:00 am this morning. He spent the night in shorts and a t-shirt and the temps probably reached the mid-20's by early this morning. He was running within a group of runners who I know but I didn't know this runner. He was out training with his friend who is running the WS in June and the lost runner was to be his pacer.

It sounds like he didn't have much experience in trail running. A friend of mine who was pulling up the rear on the climb up Devils Thumb was within two swtichbacks sight of him right before they reached the top of The Thumb. When my friend got there, the runner was gone but he just assumed he went to the next meeting spot, about a mile down the trail. Although everyone was returning on the same trail they went out on this runner didn't have good trail sense because he took off on a side trail once he reached the top. Everyone realized the runner was lost around 11:00 am on Sunday morning.

I wonder what the runner was doing? He had almost 9 hours of daylight to get out. He spent the night wandering around and found a plastic tarp to wrap himself inside. He was okay but in an interview he said his trail running days were probably over.

Hey Buddy..What about pacing you're friend at Western States, Huh? And besides, staying up all night, wandering around is good training for the nighttime pacing you'll be doing.

quite a story Bill and this guy is lucky he came out of this unharmed. That sounds pretty cold to be in shorts and and a tshirt. he was lucky he found the tarp. It sounds like this guy won't be pacing is friend. Are these trails marked somehow??

Suzanne, it must be really beautiful on and under the water. I think you live such a different life then I can even imagine. I get claustrophobic under water. I really don't like the idea of swimming where there could be sharks.

Last track workout tonight. Hopefully the rain is gone. Bad news is there is a could chance of rain for Sunday's race. I guess I don't mind running in it I just hate the pre and post race. For one the post race party is fun and would be cut short if we had to stand around in the pouring rain. They have a huge post race celebration in the parking lot of a mall we finish in front of with music and all kinds of booths and lots of food. I like meeting up with pace group members. we won't be seeing each other too much anymore. Well some I will see at half marathon training but some move on to FTM training( most it isn't first time but they go back to the program every year).

Hey guys---I am back---I saw all of the well wishes and thoughts for me on the old thread----thanks so much----I am doing ok. I flew in late last night and spent most of today doing laundry and organizing my four pages worth of e-mails from work so I can get to it tomorrow. The people at my job have been nothing short of incredible. I have only run once in the last week and a half----MAJOR taper for my half mary this weekend, I guess, lol. I am not going to try to PR or anything, but I am still going to run in it---it will not honor my brother to sit on my butt and feel sorry for myself.

It is good to be home. I am going for an easy 4 miler tonight after I get the kids fed and settled in for the evening. I like running at night---less chance I will miss an important phone call from work (although most of my staff know I am not officially back til tomorrow).

I am sad, but feel so blessed---the outpouring of support I received from neighbors, family, and friends was just incredible. I am also bone tired---but it is more from emotional exhaustion than activity, so I know I will feel better if I get out there and move a little. Thanks again for luvvin' on me!!!!

Tate - I'm glad you are back and got out for your run.

Today was laundry day, so no workout at the gym or outdoors. Yesterday I hit the gym for some easy weights with abs. Later I went for a 45 minute bike ride. I'm cutting back this week due to a 5K this Saturday. I plan to run 45 minutes easy tomorrow and call it a week until the race.

Tate, good to see you back and all I can send is more hugs. There really aren't many words for times like this.

Bill, that is a gruesome story. Jeez, and it could have been worse if he was a few brain cells shorter.

Spent almost 3 hours underwater today and about 6 hours on a boat (when I wasn't under water) and another 3 hours either hauling, washing, rinsing, or hanging gear. I am whipped. But the diving was fantastic and I had a great group. It was so ironic. We had one couple from Mexico City plus a group of 4 from Mexico City. The couple had been here for a few days already. The group arrived around mid night last night but they had pre-reserved the trip. Anyway, it turns out they all work in the same department at the same insurance company and none of them knew they were going to be here at the same time. And this is a really remote village but quickly becoming a very famous dive destination. Anyway, they were all really good divers and had excellent equipment so it was an easy day for me. Diving with good divers is like running with good runners...you just cruise along and enjoy it and don't have to worry about somebody tripping over a coral head. I probably burned a lot of calories from heat loss but I didn't get much cardio. Hope to wake up at 6 AM and run before the tide of tourists shows up at 8 AM but it's doubtful. I'm whipped.

Debbie, I've only seen about a dozen sharks in my life, mostly nurse sharks which are like big cat fish. One instructor told me that on every dive a shark sees you but on one in a hundred you see a shark. They are not fond of divers. Guess we taste yucky with all the lead, aluminum, steel, and neoprene.

Oh, and what happened in Boston? I never could find coverage here and was too busy to look for very long.

My last speed workout for this program was last night. We did 800X3 but on a curvy pike trail with some mild ups and downs. I was supposed to to do at 10K pace but all three were done even faster. I got slower each one though trying hard to feel the pace. I know I couldn't go as fast for 6.2 miles because I was really feeling the last mile cool down. We did 5.25 miles total and whole overall run was done at around a 9:45 pace with the 800s done in between 4:10 and 4:25 minutes time( obviously not pace). I plan on aiming for 9 minute mile pace for race and who knows what I will do. I did last 10K in 9:18 pace and it was really hilly. This is more down hill. He said take 15 seconds a mile off that one and that will probably be our pace. I am hoping ofr 20 seconds a mile but ....

Suzanne, glad you had such a nice day and yes it sounds very tiring.

Dean, sounds like 3 of us will be racing this weekend. Tate has a half, I have a 10K and you have a 5K.'Tis the season!

Tate, back to work today. Hopefully you don't have piles of things waiting for you and coworkers took care of things while you were gone.

One of my club friends not only PRed at Boston but did a half ironman two days before. All this and she has been flying back and forth to California for work. She must have some great genes. I know her mom is athletic too.

Bill, do you have any big races coming up? More Ultras in your future? We just had the Bull Run 50 miler here a few weeks ago. My husband is race director for a trail 5K May 4th. I won't be running it. I will be volunteering. My club has a number of trail races but no long ones put on by us.

Great new avatar Debbie!

Yes, I did oversleep. Might get in a run this afternoon but right now my entire body is sore from lifting and boating (makes you tense up in weird ways). I could always dig the elliptical out of the corner, too.

WOE: I beg your pardon.
Debbie,

I have the Big Sur Marathon this Sunday. Three weeks after I'm going to run the Ohlone 50k and on July 19 I'm going to run the Tahoe Rim Trail 50k. I'm expecting both the Ohlone 50k and TRT 50k to be tough races in regards to hills. I don't really have the hill climbing training as of yet but we'll see. I plan to concentrate on more hill work after Big Sur and certainly over the next two or three months leading up to TRT. TRT has hills and is at altitude.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do at Big Sur. I may have been better off to go out for 20-26 in the canyons this weekend, where that guy got lost but I'm looking forward to enjoying the Big Sur run.

Here is the rescue of that guy.

TheDailyRunner.com -- The Latest News & Technology for Runners: Rescued Runner Tells His Story

It sounds like he was quite inexperienced in trail running. This was his first time out there. A runner friend of mine was pulling up the rear and was two swithbacks behind him just before the top of Devils Thumb and within shouting distance. Normally, just by instincts a runner will pause at the top and wait for the last runner to get to the top, expecially if you're not familiar with the area. In this case the runners were just retracing thier footsteps back to the start. He went off trail once he reached the top of DT and when my friend reached the top probably 3 or 4 minutes later assumed he kept going to the water pump, another regropuping and filling up location, one mile down trail. This was at around 10:30 am. At 11:00 they realized he was off track and my friend, a total stranger to this guy spent the rest of the day and through the night until 6:00 am searching for him. Matt probably covered 50-60 miles.

Hello,
I ran last night 4 miles and this morning 4 miles. I am not sure how fast I ran. I think it was pretty quick because there was a lady in front of me last night. She was smoking me! LOL! I decided I was going to pace myself with her. I could not run as fast as her due to my workout the day before, but I kept her in sight and the distance the same. It was a hard but good run. This morning I did the same run only opposite way. It was a little easier being the hills are more gentle this way! LOL! This evening I am planning on taking the kids to the park.

Tate~Glad to see you back!
Bill~What a story! That guy is so lucky. Its too bad he is giving up so easily on the trail runs. I guess each to his own.
Suzanne~Sounds like you got a nice strength workout!
Debbie~Keep up the good work and good luck on that race!
Dean~ I feel like I might catch up to you one of these days! Just kidding! I am getting faster though. I am putting more effort into. It feels great!

Have a good day everyone!
Kelly

Bill you are doing alot of distance races. Good luck with the marathon this weeked. So 4 of us are racing this weekend.

Kelly, I never run fast when I run alone. Even the slow runs seem harder then with I am with fellow runners. I don't know why. Keep up the good work!!

I went to Needwood Park and ran on the hiker biker trail with my husband. I was doing a slow easy run. I planned on doing 4 miles but it was more like 4.7. I turned around and came back for my husband alot. I went slow. I mean 12 minute mile slow but he didn't feel well and ended up walking a mile or more. He has my cold and just couldn't breath well. It wasn't really an easy run. They really never are. This place has some nice hills. It is very pretty and peaceful there. It is my favorite place to run and I do run there every Tuesday/ Thursday night now until it gets dark in the fall.Best of all it is not far from my house. I can take this trail all the way to DC if I wanted to.

Tomorrow night is an easy 3 miles with 4 strides at race pace. Then I am off two days from running until Sunday race day. So this is a low mileage week.

The month of May will be a low mileage month too. I need to rest and recover some after speed development and before Half Marathon training begins the end of May. I am maybe doing one 5 mile race instead of 3 races I did last May.

It looks like spring has us out there for some great runs and the weekend looks to be a hot racing one for us. I'll be looking forward to reading the race reports.

Today I ran 47 minutes in my favorite park, but it was an easy run. I ran well, but my legs felt tight in spots. I may have overdone it with Sunday's long run and pushing the pedals hard while biking on Monday. No biggie because I'm officially in rest mode from cardio until Saturday's race. I plan to hit the gym tomorrow for some light working out and stretching. Since I'm working Saturday and Sunday, I am taking tomorrow off. After the gym, I may head to my favorite park to catch some rays.

Dean

Running tonight. The weather is grand but soon to cool down again. Will be in the 50s for the race and may have some drizzle.

I am doing an easy 3 tonight and then 4 strides according to schedule. I will be schedule free for one month. That will be nice for a change.

Debbie, enjoy your scheduled free time and if I don't get another chance: GOOD LUCK! You have made an incredible recovery since I joined this board. I can't wait to get back on a schedule; it's really hard not knowing when I will have the opportunity or the energy to run.

Dean, LOL at you going to the park for sun. It's my worst enemy here. But I do vaguely remember a season called winter and how wonderful it was to be able to sit in the spring sunshine. Enjoy some for me! And congratulations on your 20K. I can't wait to see you do a marathon. I hope to see you run in Boston in the near future.

Kelly, it sounds like you're getting in some good runs. Debbie really has a good point about running with other people. When I can get out with DH I always push myself to run harder; and with me dragging along behind it helps him to take it easy once in a while.

Hope to get out for a 10K this afternoon. Yesterday it turned out my Garmin wasn't charged so I just ran to a well remembered turnaround pt from when I measured everything down here with a car. We went for a family drive up the coast and I spray painted kms on rocks along the side of the road when I first started following a program. Those rocks have long sinced been washed clean or pushed into the jungle by the bicentenial road grading but I've pretty much got it memorized. Since we are not due for road grading again for another 48 years, I'm going to be ready for trail racing soon. There are no hills here but going up and down the stairs at least 50 times a day has to count for something.
