Ran my first 5k and...
1. I survived.
2. Went from start to finish without stopping. 3. Finished in 25:45; ; 7.22 mi/hr; 8:18 pace (really huffing and puffing). 4. Came in 101 out of 226 5. Came in 20/27 in my age group (I'm 39; turning 40 will help my stats )Beginning yesterday afternoon and into today, my quads are really sore. Question: Is this a result of working harder, running on a different surface, or both? (Up to this point, only trained on treadmill but race was on the street) Anyone else experience this? Training tips? -Paul |

Nice race Paul. 25:xx is a good time for a first 5k.
The soreness is a result of moving your legs faster (harder) for an extended period of time AND running on a NEW surface, pavement vs a treadmill. How long was your longest run prior to the 5k. If you run 4-6,7 miles for some runs and insert some tempo or intervals then a 5k run should not create much sorness aferwards. I don't think it's nescessary to run on pavement vs treadmill but I like to get some time spent on the surface that the race is going to be held. I run trails a lot but if I'm going to run a longish race on roads, I like to get some long runs on roads. The sorenss should peak around 36 to 48 hours after the race and dissipate in the course of 3-4 days. Last edited by westside : 04-14-2008 at 06:45 AM. |

Wow, your times are excellent for your first race!
![]() I am currently running about a 12 minute mile but I'm working on increasing my distance and increasing my speed. I used to run before I had my first child (who's now 6), I was running 5 miles per day, 4 days per week. Not quite there yet but I will be! As far as your soreness, I experienced the same thing after running races in particular because of getting caught up in the competetion of running my best/fastest. I would make sure to do some good stretching after a race and your running routine in general. Also take a long hot bath or sit in a hot tub for a while. That should make you feel better.CONGRATS on your accomplishment!

A 12 minute mile is good for getting back into shape. That's where I did most of my C25K running. I've recently moved from the treadmill to the road. So hopefully my body is getting used to a new surface. I'm doing another 5K on Sunday. It will be interesting to see how I feel afterwards. And to see if my time is about the same. -Paul |

well done Paul. You ran harder then you are used to and you are feeling it now. You need to slowly increase your miles and get outside and run. It is different then the treadmill and what you will do on race day.
There is a running thread on the exercise board. Come join us. You can get lots of questions answered and great support!! I have been running over 2 years. I am a 51 year old women and have never gone quite that fast in a 5K. My 25 year old son can run circles around me and he started running the same time I did. Oh to be make and young! See if there is a running club near by you. I belong to the Road Runners. We have great training programs so you can do track work and group runs and make running friends. |
