How do you shrink the hips?

Hi I'm fairly new on this board. I've already lost a few pounds since I started (April 9) and have just started incorporating in exercise. On the weekends I walk/jog (intervals) 3 miles and during the week I go to the gym. As I am more interested in losing inches than pounds what exercise is most effective at targeting the hips?
Elliptical, treadmill, squats???

Thanks!

I don't have any studies to back this up (but I swear I read about it on ediets... I'll look for the article), but since I started jogging on the treadmill I've lost a lot of weight in my hips, thighs and legs. (Now my waist, that's another story! ) Seriously, I'd be in a 12 or 14 if I could just lose the inches around my waist... pants fit there but are baggy in the hips, legs and butt.

I started out and could only jog for 2 minutes without being winded. Then I was able to up it to 5, then 8, then I started doing intervals... now I can go 1.5 miles at an 11 min / mile pace. I usually do 2 miles total on the treadmill and am planning on working it up to 3 in 30 min or less.

Also, if I'm just walking on the treadmill, I walk on an incline because it burns more fat.

Good luck! If I find the article, I'll post it here for you.

OK, I looked, but I can't find it. Sorry! I guess all I can say is that jogging has worked wonders for me.

OH! And I forgot to add:

Squats, lunges and other lower body resistance training will also help you lose inches in that area.

Strength training is a good option, as mentioned.

My personal favorite is Callanetics. Allow me to share with you an email I received from a good friend.

She is married to a personal trainer, and they are avid fitness gurus, and she's no stranger to strength training, gyms, weight training, etc., obviously. They are very conscientious about their fitness.

She has struggled (as I had/have) with larger thighs/hips, and she's not been able to effectively reduce in those areas in all the years she's been working out with her husband, to the extent that she's satisfied with that part of her body, that is.

I introduced her to Callanetics in March.

This is her email to me yesterday:

"......After 8 hours, I have lost a total of 4 inches! An inch in my waist, 1/2 in my hips, 1 1/2 in my right leg, and 1 inch in my left leg. (My legs have always been uneven). No, I haven't taken pictures yet, but I will. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for telling me about Callanetics! I am more motivated than ever now."

This email, coming from HER, speaks volumes to the integrity of Callanetics.

Another one to say that jogging works great on the hips. I've seen my measurements drop faster on the 2 weeks I've been running than they were before.

Squats and Deadlifts get all the flabby stuff - the areas I want shrunk are always sore the next day.

My recommendation:

Start with either Ten Years Younger in Ten Hours;

or

Callanetics Evolution

Both can be purchased from Amazon, I believe...?

Check out the monthly Callanetics thread for more information.

I 2nd Callanetics. I think you'll get the biggest bang per time spent exercising. My hips have gone down soooo much that I'm skipping over the hip/behind exercises on the 10/10 DVD. I simply don't want to be narrower then I am right now.
