I don't think we get that show in Canada. I've heard of the show though. Thanks for the info. I'm headed to Collage Video right this moment.

Okay, everybody -- I did my first JMS. I had to do it after work, and as I expected, I was interrupted with demands and requests from family for this and that, so I actually didn't get all the way through -- almost, but not quite. But I really liked it!

I have been wiped out from energy the last couple of days, and so I decided to go with Level 1 for my first "exposure," and then do Level 2 the next time and evaluate.

I did Level 1 with 10-lb dumbbells. Does she actually tell us what amount of weight to use, or do we decide that based on our individual level of fitness? With the 10-lb, it felt challenging. Just wondered what everyone else uses.

I can't do the jump-rope-thing due to a bad knee, and it's crazy to risk screwing up my knee over an exercise DVD of all things, so I'm doing punches and other lower-impact-higher-intensity type cardio in place of the things that I know can be risky -- esp on carpet. Doing cardio/aerobic exercise on carpet is riskier anyway.

I'm looking forward to doing it again. Great to be on this challenge finally.

I'll need to start back at the beginning and read through to gain from everyone's experiences.

Glad you finally got to try it. You used 10lb dumbells??????!!! I have to commend you my friend lol. I use 5lbs and find them to be a killer...how you managed with 10lbs is beyond me... Good for you. I hope I can work my way up to 10lbs one of these days.

I've just completed one week of level 3 which marks a total of five weeks of Shred for me. I started with two weeks of level 1, then two weeks of level 2 and I plan to finish up my second week of level 3 next week, thus ending my 30 days of Shred and then go from there. It's funny because when I first started doing Shred, I previewed the entire DVD before trying any of the workouts and couldn't even IMAGINE being able to get past level 1 to even think about doing levels 2 and 3. It looked really difficult. But low and behold as I completed each of the two weeks of the previous level and moved on to the next level, I was amazed at how much my strength and endurance had increased so that I've been able to do each level. Jumping jacks used to kill me but now I do them with ease...situps used to kill me, now I do them with ease. So this circuit training thing really works for me, I think.

Shred rocks!

EDIT: sorry for the double post. Forgot I had just posted in this thread...lol

Why is it risky to do aerobics/cardio on carpet? I've always done it because I have no other choice, but what could happen?

H20 -- This makes me feel better now! I wasn't sure WHICH weight to start with, so I just started with my "middle of the road" weight that I typically use when weight training -- since I use 8, 10, 12 and 15 lbs for that. And that's why I said I found it challenging, because with 10 lbs, it is challenging. May have something to do with the pace. Not sure. I'm not sure I could do Level 2 with 10 lbs...so this relieves me to hear you say that!

Glad to hear about your strength/endurance improvements....that's what it's all about, girl!

As for the carpet thing, I was given that warning years ago by other aerobic trainers, that just to be careful when doing a lot of jumping/kicking type movement, particularly lateral moves, on carpet, because the traction is different and it's easier to have an injury. I never researched it, I just remembered two different instructors telling me that and it just sort of stuck with me over the years.

But the jumping rope seems to bother my knees the most. I can handle jumping jacks for some reason, but jumping rope seems to put more stress on my knees in an uncomfortable sort of way, KWIM?

There are a lot of other ways to get in cardio w/o risking the knees, so I'll just try to keep mine higher intensity as much as possible w/o the higher impact.

Wow

Twila, 10 pounds weights, I pick up my 8 pounds downstairs totally confident that I can do it and whent up to do the DVD, started and then ask my DH if he can get me my 5 pounds, couldn't do it with the 8, you are strong Twila... I lift 8-10-15 when I do UB training , but mix with cardio, I totally can't. Good for you, I have big hope that eventually I will get better.

This got my attention....that's one thing I've noticed having done just Level 1 so far....the ab part is fluff for me...no challenge....so I'm gonna have to peek at Level 3 for "coming attractions."

Okay. Finished reading through.

Today is my refeed/depletion workout day, so I began with Level 1 of JMS, using 8 lb weights. I wanted to have enough strength to get through 50 mins of upper body (refeed day schedule), so I thought I'd try it with 8-lb and keep it at Level 1. This time, no interruptions.

It's a great workout, and I'm ready for Level 2, but I don't know if I should stick with 8 lb or 10, or just do a combo of both -- that's probably what I'll do when I move up.

I notice the ab segments were no challenge (thanks to Callanetics and AbJam -- the two best Ab Workouts I've done so far), so I'm anxious to see what is in the higher levels for abs.

The stretching at the end, I noticed that Callanetics has come in handy for that as well, giving me "far younger" flexibility, esp with hamstring/leg stretches.

This is a great workout, and I'm soooo excited about being on this challenge.

You guys have made HUGE progress, and I commend you on your commitment to this training! Honored to be here.

I'll be completing my 30 days of Shred in a few days and I have to admit, it is probably one of the best workouts I've ever done. I have lost soooo many inches it is unbelieveable! You'd think a twenty minute workout wouldn't be effective enough but as Jillian says it's the combination of cardio and strength together that give you great results. And she's right, I am living proof of that. I am much stronger than I was before, my endurance levels have greatly increased. I have gotten REALLY, REALLY good at jumping jacks, plank jacks, sit-ups and push-ups, even. I haven't felt this fit in years - probably since high school (and that was EONS ago...lol!)

I'm going to see if I can post some more of my Shred results some time this week.

Watch-me-shrink, I'm so glad you're onboard with us and doing Shred too.

Can't wait for your results. It just struck me what you said about the combination of weights and cardio but isn't that what THE FIRM is all about?

actually I am considering getting 30 day shred but that does not seem possible except after a couple of months from now.

Thank you so much lovenuts. I feel great! Shred has kept me motivated and inspired to keep working out. It is truly the best thing I've ever done for my body - especially with the great results I've been seeing. I can't even imagine not doing my daily workout. Not doing it is just not an option.

At 38 years old, I'm feeling almost as healthy and fit as I did at 16 years of age.
