Hi all.

I have trouble with breathing while doing the stomach exercises. I catch myself holding my breath. It feels difficult to breath...maybe because I have a belly fat tire, who knows.

So, do I understand this right, I can do it everyday if I want. I thought I read somewhere that it was to be done every other?

Thanks again. Off to read the threads...........lauri
Lauri, it can be done every day, but every now and then I think you need to let your body rest.

I did it 3-4 times a week when I began (occas on consecutive days), and I got great results.

Great Twyla,

I don't know why, but I thought I read every other day. Now I will try to do it about 4 days a week, cardio 2xs, and upper body 2xs.

I have only been exercising about a week, but I feel so much better, happier, does that make sense? Must have had those endorphines (sp?) that have been sleeping for the last 5 years kick in or something.

I did my first hour of callan yesterday. I know i feel it in the back of my arms and a lil in my abs if i bend over or something. Since Im not seriously hurting does that mean I didnt do it correctly? I know its only my first hour and I still have alot to learn but I thought I was supposed to be sore. Not sure just asking how everyone felt after there first hour? Im about to do it again 2nite. The hour goes by so quick

some days you will feel it some times not. Just make sure form is right and that way you get most bang for your buck..

I think your plan sounds right on track. Good job!
twyla, what would you recommend for an upper-body weight training video? i did joyce vedral from a book a few years ago (she is also older and inspiring!), but i don't think i recall much stretching there. she seems quite stocky, not long and lean like callan. how do you keep your upper body from bulking up?

CallanFan,
I did Joyce Vedral for many, amny years and i never bulked up in my upper body with her workouts. With Joyce's workouts you will not bulk, you will build some muscle, but nothing bulky. Which of her workouts do you have?? Her "Just Joyce" arms, back(think) are great! And you can choose for how long you want to workout for, 7,15,25mins.

CF, If I use upperbody videos, it's usually Kathy Smith. I really like her. I've not tried J.V. But unless you use VERY HEAVY weights, you shouldn't bulk up. I'm not as concerned about a little bulking in U.B. as I am lower B. I use on avg 10 lb weights. Some 15's. Sometimes 8's. I have memorized two of Kathy's workouts, so I just turn on good tunes and go at it, no resting, circuit style, supersets, which usu takes about 25-30 mins with no resting. Sometimes I will throw in a set or two from another workout when I do this on my own.

I also do Turbo Sculpt (Turbo Jam series) sometimes. And I do lots of pushups (great one-stop-shopping for upper body workout!)

If you're looking to buy new videos, I'd recommend (what I've tried ): Kathy Smith's Lift Weigths to Lose Weight, OR, Super Slimdown Circuit.

Greetings all. What a stroke of luck to find so many people who are all doing callanetics. I had the book when I was a teenager and used it from time to time, though I was always too impatient to stick with it consistently enough to see any real results. I was surfing the web wondering if I should give it another go (now that I'm a little older and hopefully more patient) and I stumbled across this forum. I haven't done any callanetics for years and stupidly gave away my 10-in-10 book. Silly me. I'm considering ordering the dvd off amazon now and giving it an honest try. I think I could do with seeing the excercises in motion rather than just in photograph.

Still, I'm in the middle of a black hole and need a little motivation. Twyla, I would love to read your journey of a believer, but I'm having trouble PM'ing - something about not being cleared yet or having enough previledges. Anybody know how to overcome this?

Oh, and for those of you who have posted results: AMAZING!

i don't have any, but i think i was using a book from the library called "bottoms up!" (which obviously had no upper-body work in it at all). i searched amazon, and the only "just joyce" video they have is "Just Bra-Roll/Boobs and Just Butt" which apparenty includes the back. is this the one you're thinking of?

Miss Bandit, since you haven't posted enuf yet on this forum to "earn" the right to PM, and I think Snuckles was waiting also, I'll just post the links for the first five months of Challenges when I began Callanetics in Nov '05. My journey that I email to people who ask is basically cut/pasted posts and comments that I've made from my first hour all the way through to my fifth month, observations, measurements, etc.

All of that is contained in these links, but they're just spread among the many pages of the challenges. Still, you could gain a lot of inspiration reading through EVERYONE'S progress, in addition to mine, so here goes, if you're interested.

Hope you decide to join us.

Callanetics Challenge for December

Callentics Challenge for January 2006

CALLANETICS CHALLENGE FOR FEBRUARY 2006

Hello all!

Sorry I've been out of pocket for a couple of days.

Freeing and lildragon - Great job on your progress!!!

Thycke – You’re kicking butt, way to go. Yes, the leg/behind exercises are hard…

For me, I finished hour 12 of 10/10 today. Yesterday I did a 3 mile walk in my fit flops (has anyone heard of them?). My butt was definitely sore today before I did 10/10. This week I’m going to try an experiment. I’m going to alternate 10/10 and Evolution in addition to 20-30 min of cardio. I want to see what everyday will do. If I feel good after that, I may try to push for 4 weeks like that (ala Callanetics Countdown). I’ll keep you all posted on how it goes.

Thanks Twyla!

I am actually going to encorporate Joyce Vedral's Fat Burning weight lifting Workout into my routine. I got the book years ago and got into amazing shape from following the moves. I'm not following her eating plan/diet however because I don't agree with that aspect of the book. It is a great book for weight lifting beginners because she shows you how to do the very basics plus how to add difficulty once you master the moves. Joyce does appear sort of bulky (I wouldn't quite call her stocky) in her photos, but I think it's because she is extremely muscular and she's very short, I think 5 foot or maybe shorter.

Once I started having kids I stopped the weight training but I'm ready to get back into it!
