(Introducing) Walk This Way.....for all the walkers.

Yes a support thread for walkers.

You don't have to be fast or go far, if you walk...you're welcome!

I'll start by introducing myself and my routine.

I'm tiggerr (lower case and 2 r's)
I've been walking since January of 2007 (before then too but not to this extent)
I trained with Team in Training for a few months and completed the San Diego Rock and Roll Half Marathon for the Leukemia Society on June 3rd.
(blog---> One for the Road)

I'm currently training on my own for another Rock and Roll, this time in San Jose (California) on October 14th (27 days from now )

I walk every day, minimum of 30 minutes and max 1 hour or 3 to 4 miles depending on mood or speed.
I take one day off. Sometimes I take more days off (today is one)

I'm married, 2 kids (9 and 13 aka Little Man and Resident Teen)

So introduce yourself and let's get posting!

new to you all

Hi everyone. I"m Cheryl and I walk. I walk only around a park here where I live with my pal, Rayna, my toy poodle. My companion (for now) lol. any how. I walk to walk her. I don't walk or can't walk at a very fast pace because of her. I don't want to leave her at home then she would get no exercise, so we walk. We walk about 1.5 miles each day. some days I don't walk. I don't have a garmin or a pedometer as my goal is to just walk, at the moment. I'm 52 and single and am making exercise a habit. I have been looking into some Callanetics and other stuff but since this is about walking, I'll talk about walking. I love it. Took me a while to find something I do like to do and I do like to walk. I have the You ON a Walk dvd and sometimes I listen to that as I walk and other times I take in the quite scenery and do breathing exercises. Some days I probably won't post that I walked because I don't do anything super on my walks. But.. I'm walking.

Walker/Hiker here!

Hi! I’m Alex. I’m 42 years old (43 this Friday) happily married, with two kids 16 and 14.

I hike every day at lunch 3.6 miles (plus or minus) for a little less than an hour M-F and then usually choose a longer 7+ mile hike on Saturday and take Sundays off. I have been hiking most of this year, and walking off and on since I started a few years ago. When I started over 100 pounds ago I could barely walk a mile in a park. Now I really push myself on my daily hikes and just last week I hiked a 10 mile trail that started at 10,000 feet and climbed to over 11,200 feet.

I truly believe that walking and now hiking have saved my life. I really enjoy the solitude on my hikes. It helps get out job or life frustrations, it is great exercise, and I get to see some very beautiful country.

I’m excited about a walking thread!

Hello

My name is Amber, I'm 27, married, have one daughter and a spoiled rotten pug named Lord Snugglekins (I didn't name him, daughter did!). I'm also a college student, but I don't go back to class till next week. I'm in the fitness technology program at my school, and plan on becoming a personal trainer after I graduate, and hopefully someday I'll have enough money to open my own gym/fitness studio.

I've been using walking as my main form of cardio all this past summer, and hope to stick with it even when all the rainy weather starts up here soon (hey, it's pacific northwest lol). I used to do a lot of step and kickboxing, but my poor little knees can't handle doing that all the time anymore, so I started going out for walks. I try to go an hour at a time. My walking route isn't anything special, I generally walk around and around a path at a park near my house, or sometimes go walk around the track at a middle-school nearby. I take my iPod with me, good music makes for a good workout. In addition to walking, I strength train. I've recently gotten into kettlebell training, but also still do traditional weight-training along with it. Every now and then I'll do a kickboxing or step workout, but not often anymore. Once or twice a month is enough for those, more than that and my knees are none too pleased with me.

I walked this weekend and it was interesting, I did walk 6 miles on my own and I felt quite good about that.
I'm such a talker during my walks though that I need a sounding board.

Hi
I walk in my basement, everyday, for forty minutes.

It's about 42' and then I turn and walk back again.
Back and forth, back and forth.

Sounds boring I guess ... but it doesn't bother me.
Don't have to face the elements (or the neighbor's Pit Bulls)

My goal for this month is 50 pounds. I'm ahead of schedule.

Last night I walked only about 20 minutes with my husband around our block.

I enjoy walking,

I do much better by myself. I love the solitude. Also I can go at my own pace which can be hard for my wife to keep up when I hike for fitness (speed). Mainly it is the peace and freedom I get when I'm by myself. I really let my mind wander and I can feel the stress totally leave my body.

I also like to go with my wife, but that is a different enjoyment. We get to spend time together and talk and enjoy the outdoors.

Hey Walkers!

Well I “pounded some dirt” yesterday at lunch. I hiked for my usual 3.6 miles in the canyons. The trail I mainly hike at lunch goes 1.8 miles to a split in the trail. That is where I turn around. It is mainly uphill. It climbs about 540 feet in that 1.8 miles. If I really push myself I get a pretty good workout. Yesterday felt great.

Tomorrow, if the weather is clear, I will attempt my first ever 14er: Mount Sherman. This is what I’ve been walking and hiking for all summer. I’ve been waiting until I was under 200 pounds and in better shape. I think I am ready. I hope to be at the trailhead at 7am. Wish me luck!

tiggerr – That is awesome on the half marathon. WTG!

Cheryl – Walking for ANY reason is super. Keep at it.

Amber – Sounds like you have everything figured out! You can be our trainer!

Prairie – Any time of year is a great time for a walk. Glad to hear you are starting.

Jezzie – I think the fact that you are walking is great. It doesn’t matter where, as long as we get exercise. Keep it up!

Psigna – I walk with my wife whenever we can. It makes a nice change. Great job!

All right, now lets all have a great day!!

for tytbody, you go and walk. I find that sometimes the times I want to walk the least are my most enjoyable.

Jezzie, slow and steady wins the race.

I think I'm around 225 miles by now since January, 115 so far since May. I adds up!

Alex, wow, hiking up.
You are my hero!

psigna, I enjoy walking too, it can be quite peaceful and there's things to see!

RayOfSunshine, I hear you on the rain. California stays nice long but it can get cold and wet towards fall.
We'll see.

Allright, this might be the one and only personal I'll be able to wing.

I walked 3.63 miles today in an hour.
Off to the shower and work!

TTFN!

Walk While You Work
Instead of sitting at your desk all day, wouldn't it be great if you could, say, walk in place at your computer and shed a few pounds?

That's exactly what researchers thought when they designed a workstation treadmill. They estimated it could help overweight people lose up to 66 pounds in a year. But because you won't find these far-thinking contraptions at your local Wal-Mart, here are a few realistic ways to make desk life less stationary.

Premise Pans Out

Obese workers had to walk at a speed of only 1 mile per hour at the walk-and-work stations to burn twice the calories they normally did during a workday. And replacing just 2 or 3 hours of sitting with walk-and-work action could burn 44 to 66 pounds over the course of a year. Bottom line: Moderate activity matters.

Here are some quick and easy ways to eke some exercise out of your workday:

* Spend half your lunch hour walking.
* Take three 10-minute walking breaks.
* Fidget (here's how it helps).
* Ask your employer about subsidizing memberships at local gyms.

No matter how hectic your schedule may be, you should try to walk 30 minutes every day. If it doesn't happen at work, slap on your walking shoes as soon as you get home.

Did my forty minute basement walk earlier.

Tomorrow I'm going to the Bronx Zoo.
I'll have to remember to wear a pedometer.

I'm new here, and a WALKER.
I started getting back into walking each evening 2 weeks ago, and I am feeling happy, just to be more active. I am doing 30-60 minutes each evening, and I want to pick up the pace soon, and add more hills.

You'll find it incredibly addicting.

Today no walking for me, I have a body-pump demo at work to go to.

Goodie.

Good Morning Hikers!

Glad to see everyone staying active. It is so important to get up and get moving.

Well, I did it. Yesterday my wife and I climbed 14,035 foot Mount Sherman. It was hard, and a little narrow in places but it was well worth it. The views from the top were unbelievable!

I am absolute proof that anyone can “do it.” When I weighed 297 pounds I couldn’t tie my shoes without huffing and puffing. Now I just climbed a 14K foot mountain. Don’t let the little bumps in the road stop you from what should be your ultimate goal: Good Health. I’m not there yet, but I know I will get there now. I know that I can accomplish anything now.

Don’t stop walking, or Hiking or running or whatever you like to do. Just get up and get moving.

I hope you all have a great day!

May I join too?

I walk every morning at 4:30 with my little dogs - Baja the Chihuahua and Lola the Chiweenie. We average 3-4 miles. Yes, the little ones are tough.

Sometimes my neighbor comes along so we chat and walk in the wee hours in the dark. Other times it is just me and the dogs.

When I get back in the mornings I have to get my 2 daughters up, dressed fed and out the door. This is in addition to showering and getting myself dressed for work in anticipation of my 2 hour commute.

Did I mention that I love my life!

I'd love to join. I currently use a pedometer and walk at least 10,000 steps a day. I usually try to get in a short walk in the mornings but it's staying dark so long that soon I won't be able to walk before work at all so DH volunteered to be my walking buddy after work. At work, I usually take a 10 minute walk around our building a couple times a day, a longer walk around campus during lunch, take the long way to the restroom and park on a distant hill. I just finished reading, Pedometer Walking: Stepping Your Way to Health, Weight Loss and Fitness and have been re-inspired to keep walking!

I don't see why you wouldn't be able to join.
No one own this challenge, I just started it.

Walking is great, I walking.

Alex, you are the best example of that it works.

No walking today as I'm sore from Body Pump last night.
Not much but some.

Walking tomorrow for sure and then trying to get 10 miles in on Saturday.
