mousepie!

*takes bow* for the compliments.

Not walking these last few days in order to recover. Had a 90 minute massage yesterday and feel so much better.
Back to walking tomorrow.

Going after a 5k next.

Ladies, I've joined a walking club! They have scheduled 10K events (the next one is Nov 3) as well as 10K walks you take anytime on your own over a mapped route. These clubs are part of a national walking organization (ava dot org) with walks in cities all over the US. We'll be walking in Iowa City this weekend (and stopping to meet LeahIA on the way!). We're going to St. Augustine on vacation in Feb and there is a walk there! DH & I like to walk and it will be fun walking predetermined routes in other cities. And there are awards for the scheduled events! I'm excited!

Heee, with enough time (all day!), rest stops and weight loss (40 more lbs), I could maybe walk it--never run!

I would like to join!! I am an avid walker/jogger. I breathe better when I workout indoors,so 99% of the time I use my treadmill. A few times a week our family hikes, bikes or skates at a park down the street, but this is in addition to my treadmill.
I love that I can watch tv shows on my laptop while walking. It certainly makes the time pass faster.
My current workout:
50-75 minutes
3.5-4.2 mph
1.0-8.0 incline %
I am looking for an interesting interval routine so that I have something planned out to follow.Does anybody have a resource for this type of thing?
I look forward to getting to know all of you. Have a great walking Friday!
Dawn

Welcome, Dawn!

Since I'm really not an expert on exercise, I'm not sure what you mean by "interval routine," BUT here's something... I have a Body for Life book and there is a section on cardo that describes HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) which is a 20 minute treadmill workout where you walk at different intensity levels for one minute each where 1 is easy and 10 is the utmost you can do. For me on a treadmill, my "1" is about 2.5 mph and my "10" is around 4.5 mph, and after 20 minutes of switching back & forth, I'm pretty pooped! I can give you better details if this is what you mean.

Hello.I am Layla.
I don't usually visit this board.Well,I walked 6 miles the other day,and yesterday EVERY part of my lower body was in pain.I really want to exercise everyday so yesterday I mostly did arm exercises because I was sore.
Do you all still walk the next day if you are sore?I don't want to tear anything(hope this is not a stupid question).

I can officially put that idea to rest! Yesterday, we did a 10K walk in Iowa City and I'll tell you, my feet about fell off! And that's only 6.2 miles, not even half of a half-marathon! I made it but it was harder than I thought it would be. Went out today and bought Dr. Scholl's gel inerts (I'm gellin') for my shoes for extra cushioning. For the whole day, I walked 23,600 steps (did a lot of walking before we started the 10k). Anyhoo, I got my first stamp in my walking book.

Walkers!!!

I had a great week of hiking last week. I only missed one day (Friday) but I did a longer, 7-mile hike on Saturday. The hike started out with a pretty good climb. Elevation gained 1000 feet in the first mile. The weather was great and the hike felt really good.

It is cold here this morning (24 degrees), but it should be a little warmer by the time I hike at lunch. I’m going to have to transition out of my shorts and t-shirt to warmer hiking clothes.

Sounds like we have a bunch of great walkers out there. Keep it up!

Layla, I have to run out real quick but I can offer you some tips if you want later.

Shimmer, baby steps. I didn't start walking 13 miles. I slowly added mileage.
I have a training chart if you want.

But I need to take Resident Teen to Girlscouts.

BBL!!!

If the weather cooperates this weekend, we're heading to a state park about an hour away that has awesome hiking trails. Of course, I'll be wearing my pedometer hoping to get in lots & lots of steps. If we don't make it there, we have some mapped out 10K walks (through the local walking club) here in town.

tiggerr, thanks for the offer of the training chart--I wouldn't mind having a look. I've never heard of 1/2 marathons around these parts but then, I've never been into walking before and maybe just haven't been paying attention!

DH & I took a 10K walk today and my pedometer total for the day was 18,000 steps. Tomorrow we are going for a picnic lunch and then hiking at a state park. Oh, and we both bought new walking shoes for all the walking we're gong to be doing!!

Fridays Canyon hike ended up 9.7 miles. It really was great. I tweaked an ankle but it was still lots of fun.

Can I play?

Hi all--Can I hang out with you? I'm Jeanne, 41 for the next few weeks, married for 7 years, have a 14 year old step daughter who moved in with us Saturday. Two days into it and it's so far so good. I've always enjoyed walking, but due to an potential health issue, I'm under doctor's orders to exercise at least 30 minutes every day. So, for the past two weeks I've been doing either the elliptical trainer 30 minutes every day, walking the neighborhood for 45 minutes, and/or hiking in a local park whenever I have the time.

I had to have some blood work done at intervals today, so between appointments I spent about an hour walking at the local reserve. It was a sunny day and the leaves were beautiful and I wanted to enjoy the color before it goes away for winter. (I also mowed and raked the lawn this morning--I'm sure I'll sleep well tonight!)

tiggerr--my goal one of these days is to do a tnt event....1/2 marathon, walking... Several of the girls I work with have done them. Four people that I work with or their spouses/children are either survivors of the disease or have passed from it. We're all big supporters of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in Southwestern Ohio. Great organization!

I'm looking forward to meeting everyone.

-Jeanne

Thanks for the warm welcome! I didn't think I'd have time to walk today because I was off of my normal routine, but ended up walking about 40 minutes in my mom's neighborhood. Also ran into a couple of old friends while I was out and about, so that was fun catching up for a few minutes. I didn't linger too, long though--I was on a mission. It was a beautiful chilly evening!

Alex, my uncle & cousins in Colorado Springs have been trying to get us out there for years. One of these days we're actually going to make it--I can't wait to do some exploring in the area. May not want to come back to the gently rolling hills of Ohio.

Walked 2 miles tonight--just around the neighborhood. It was really great because my step-daughter joined me. She's a really quiet kiddo and I know she's dealing with a lot of stuff right now, but I think because we were walking in the dusk/dark, not making eye contact, etc., she really opened up and shared some things with me. I'm hoping we may be able to make a habit of it. It's great too, because she's just an inch or so shorter than I so she challenges me to walk faster than my height-challenged friends.
