Can I join? I am getting back into weight loss mode after slacking for 8 months.
I have been more and more diligent about getting on the treadmill and have actually met my 5 times a week goal the last two weeks. I have been walking for about 30-40 minutes each time (this is about 2 miles for me), but am striving to work up to doing the Couch to 5k program once my fitness level improves. Y'all are doing great!

Walked about 3 and a half miles tonight. They were fogging again for misquitoes. This is the third night since last Friday. I am glad they are doing this but wish they would wait until after 9:30. Also got caught in a downpour. I kept walking while it was thundering and lightning, but then all at once it really started to rain. When I got home it looked like I was in a wet t-shirt contest.

Hi, I'd like to join as well. I just started my walking back on Monday. We live 1/2 mile from the school, and we have a nice track around the football field. During the summer my kids (9 yr old & 13 yr old) walked to the track 3 days a week. My daughter and I would walk the track while my son worked out in the weight room. (He plays football.) We did this faithfully until August, and it was so hot, that we got lazy.

Monday morning I decided to get up and get dressed when the kids get up. My hubby drops them off at school every morning at 7:30, and I asked him to drop me off at the track. I've walked 3 miles a day since Monday. I am able to walk the 3 miles in about an hour. I figure that's not too bad. I've met another lady who started walking Monday as well. We figure it's great to have a walking buddy. If no one else is there walking, then I have my MP3 player, and listen to my music as I walk. Sure makes the time fly before you know it. Once I'm done walking the track, I then walk the 1/2 mile back to my house. Sure does feel good to exercise, but my muscles were sure screaming at me Tuesday morning. LOL

Anyways, thanks for letting me join. Just maybe, this will keep me accountable, and keep me walking daily. Well M-F anyways.

TXcutie

3 miles in an hour is about a 20 minute mile.
Not bad for a beginner but I bet over time you'll get faster!

As for the muscle pain, walk a bit (10 minutes) stretch well (calves, quads and hamstrings) walk the rest of your walk and stretch after!
Drink plenty of water and make sure you eat well before your walks.
Also give yourself one day of rest per week.

Not too shabby TX! 15 miles, that's more than I have done this week, and I should have done at least 20.

gloriann, I'll join you in that challenge!

The Best Shoes for Walking

Walking shoes are your most important item of gear.

The Best Shoe

There is no one best shoe. The best shoe for you is the the one that fits you best, the one that gives you the proper support, flexibility, cushioning, and compensates for any stride problems you may have, such as overpronation.

Each person's feet are different. Take all advice with a grain of salt and find a shoe fitting expert to help you find the shoe that is best for your walking distance, speed, style, and surface as well as your weight and stride.

Walking or Running Shoes?

Shoe manufacturers are putting the best design and technology into running shoe styles, while walking shoe styles are being designed primarily for market appeal rather than performance.

Shimmer, my company just finished a week trail with America on the Move and I had around 163.000 steps for the week.
3 miles at my speed translates to at least 6000 steps so it was a breeze.
We had a little challenge at work too.
My supervisor, I found out, was ahead of me by 15.000 steps and I was because he sits all day and doesn't walk much.
Sooooooo I found out he put the pedometer (they are pretty bad btw) and would move his foot up and down while sitting.
If he wins this challenge I'm going to be upset at him, big time.

No walks for me today, I came back from Renaissance Faire with a wicked cold and a sore foot.
My race is in 13 days!!! Taper begins next week Monday.

Have a great week peeps!

It's cool that your company encourages participation. Where I work, there is a fitness room w/equipment but you are on your own to use it. A time or two, somebody has tried to get a group together, but with different work schedules and just plain apathy, nothing ever came of it.

About your supervisor: That is really low! Is there a prize for winning? Because he sure isn't in it to improve his health!

Hi, I'm Denise, 45, married and I just started walking. I mostly walk around the neighborhood and I'll admit it, I'm very out of shape so I'm not doing a lot right now, I'm only up to about 15 minutes but I'm hoping to eventually make it to 30 minutes and then an hour down the road. Glad to meet all you fellow walkers. When it gets too cold or icy here to walk, I'll be joining my husband at the gym to use the treadmill. No excuses!!!
