I finally did my 49 min today...... very, very ssslllooowwwlllyyyy.

I didn't check the tide table before I went and it was in, way in. Deep sand=slow running. My boys came down with me, even though they are teens and I am their mom. My PF is going to kill me because every time I landed on my heel in the sand it kind of sunk and over-extended the back of my foot. I saw a sea otter bobbing in the waves about 20 feet from me. I also saw a washed up dead sea lion that had all of its skin peeled off with the meat still completely intact. Beautiful sunset. I tried to run too close to the water (firmer sand) and a wave got me. When I got back to where my kids were, they were playing on the beach like when they were toddlers.

No blood, no skunks and no torpedo-dogs. I'll put this one in the "good run" column.

The TWYLANATOR! THAT is funny, Gina!

All of those "obstacles," and you're still putting your 49-er in your "good run" column.

Now I call THAT perserverence! I think Alissa has alluded to that in her siggy quotes. I think you've personified that one.

If only I had a beach .... how cool is THAT.

Welcome to our challenge, Susan and Alissa The more the merrier.

(Alissa, those are very worthy quotes in your siggy....good picks, girl! )

I've only lived by the beach for a couple of years... not long enough to take it for granted yet.

Just about any beach run would have to go in the "good run" column. I do realize how fortunate I am. (we can talk about median home prices if anyone wants to though )

Thanks for the welcome everyone! Can any of you tell me what your nutrition looks like for running? I exercise already 5-6 days a week; usually turbo jam, HIIT and strength training 3 days a week. I want to make sure that I eat properly so that I don't bonk during a run. thanks a lot....

Susan, your stats say Atkins, but I don't know at what carb level you are currently.

You workout sched is rather full and demanding, and IMO, you will have more energy for a more efficient workout by fueling with sufficient carbs around your workout times.

I don't eat the same # of carbs every day, because my workouts vary. I'm basically doing carb rotations currently -- low, med, high. Throughout the week I do Callanetics, Turbo Jam, Ab Jam, HIIT on elliptical roughly 2 x per week, 2-3 days of UB weights, 3 days of running, and occasionally one day of LB weights (light). On my cardio days, I always eat complex carbs before my workouts, and usu a small post-workout recovery meal. I currently am having one high-carb day per week (190-200ish net), usu Saturdays, since that's my toughest workout day. On some days, I go as low as 50-70 net. My moderate days are around 70-80 net.

So depending on what level of carbs you're eating, I would just be sure to eat the complex carbs before your run to insure best endurance and staying power. The exercise serves to deplete the glycogen, so if chosen carefully and timely, the carbs should not have an adverse effect on your weight loss, and if anything, will enhance the fat burning due to a better workout.

JMO.

Best of luck.

Thanks Twyla...I find history awesome fuel for inspiration Glad someone else appreciated them as well

Regarding the 49-er...WOW...I was thinking the same thing. That was a good run? Geesh...great attitude I'm going to have to remember that when hit a wall in a run

The visualization suggestion you left on our Cracker thread...fabulous! Thanks It pushed me through a run when my legs were feeling so heavy it was like running in peanut butter! I was short on sleep...very short...that always kills my energy for workouts. Great tool...thanks

Alissa, glad it worked for ya. Me too! I loved it.

WE CAN THANK MYA FOR THAT ONE

As for the sleep deficit robbing our energy, oh how well I know THAT! It's a good thing today is a Callanetics day, no weights or cardio. I was up for over an hour last night coughing, and 5.5 hrs of sleep is gonna be stretching it today.

That was funny!! I hope it was the first of many bonding times with DD! How fun. My son (only 9) races around the track with me now. It is so funny, I can race him (and win) on a short track...BUT on a longer track, I know how to pace myself and he has not learned that yet (boys do learn that eventually, no?). On longer runs, he races past me...says "I win, MOM" then says he is done when I jog on by and keep going! Kids!

I've printed out the training schedule from couch to 5K and plan on starting on Sunday. I have a good pair of shoes that was fitted for me at a running store.

I'm wondering if most of you run outside or on the treadmill. I do the 10K Thanksgiving Day race in Cincinnati every year and I have found that walking/running on the treadmill is very different from outside. I normally walk it, but I'd love to run at least part of it this year.

Any helpful hints/tips are greatly appreciated.

Dee

Welcome Dee!

I am an outside runner. I tried running an a treadmill at a hotel (was out of town in a place that was over 100 every day), but I am seriously un-coordinated and well, rather lame. I just couldn't get the hang of it.

I never realized how bad my balance was until I tried to run on a treadmill. Oh my gosh I was all over the place lol. I like running outside so I can take in the scenery. I also tend to look at the time too much on exercise equipment and it makes it seem never ending.

I ordered a running book for women from Amazon.com, it's suppose to be delivered by Oct 16, I think. It's some type of running book about marathon running for non-running women. Can't remember the name of it, though

Welcome, Dee. I used to race walk on a treadmill about seven years ago. I've never tried running on it, but I agree with Mya, I think I prefer the change of scenery, the fresh air, and such. I guess if it's bad weather and you don't have a choice, the treadmill would do.

Me, I'm a night runner, I've found. I like the stillness, the solitude, the stars, the cool air. It works best for me.

Got in a 30-min run tonight. That makes 80 total minutes of cardio today. I pigged last night after my son's football game (54 to 26, we won!), and I felt guilty this morning, so I did 50 mins of cardio with ab/cardio combined. THen I remembered I was scheduled for a run today, and I decided to go for it this evening. Glad I did. Felt wonderful.

Everyone -
Congrats Wolfman on running with your DD! That is great. Like Alissa, I think I'm going to start taking my DS (almost 8) out for a mile jog once I get through this program. Welcome all the new people, I'm fairly new and struggling through, but boy do I feel good afterwards.

Well I did my Week 3 Day 3 run yesterday and I felt tired but good. I think I may start doing my runs every 2 days instead of every other day. I've been looking back at what is different on the days I feel like poopie and the days I feel pretty good and one of the common things is the days I feel good I've had at least 2 days rest from running.

I've also noticed I've got to learn to relax my upper body, my shoulders kept creeping up to my ears and I would tense up. I think I need to do more upper body work. My legs feel fine but my shoulders and upper back are killing me today. Thank goodness for Callanetics Day! Have a great day.

Nice going everyone, its great to read everyones progress and stories.

Thinking back to before I started....
One of the best things about the c25k deal is that it gives you a schedule to follow. Suddenly your mindset is about planning your runs and focusing on how to get that activity in.

Anyone reading this who thinks they dont have time for it...

You start with day one and the rest just happens

newbie question

Hi There,

I am old hat to low carbing, but on day 3 of Crack the Fat Loss Code. May I ask the pro's here, when you go through 6 weeks and you have more weight to lose, do you complete the 8 weeks adding back in more carbs and then restart the plan?? Or how do you handle that?

Thanks for answering my curious question in advance. I hope that I can join your thread here. This is very exciting to me. I was successful on Atkins, but of course, went back to my old ways and gained. Now i've restarted Atkins time and time again, only to fall off the wagon eating carbs with my family. This program seems to feed to give me more freedom to be able to participate with my family more and not have to remove real carbs like break from my diet .. all together. I am so pleased i found the Womens World magazine and this plan. I hope it truly works for me. The article stated I could lose up to 28 lbs. by Thanksgiving, so I am excited to have started and I am down 4.5 lbs so far.. yeah!

Thanks for your answer to my question in advance.

Maria Lisa
