Decisions, decisions...

I'm supposed to do Week 7 Day 1 today.

Yesterday I did a spinning class at the gym and my left leg has been giving me grief all day, my quadricep muscle cramping and my on-again off-again left knee stiff and a bit swollen.

I'm thinking perhaps this would be a good time to take an extra day off, although I've been proud of the fact that I've been doing C25K every other day religiously since 8/9.

I guess I'll sleep on it.

That's what Gina was trying to tell me for MONTHS!

Kelley, glad your first run went so well!

I got in my Week 7, Day 1 run tonight.

My mantra is: "What a difference a cooler evening makes!" No issues, ran well, paced breathing, no soreness or stiffness....just good running! I love it.
Amen sister! You are on the East Coast like me so I'm sure this past weekend was extra steamy for you too. I was so happy it was in the low 80s and very little humidity last night.

Nena,

I got my podcast by googling Rober Ullrey. He has one for each of the 9 weeks. It is upbeat music with him encouraging you and telling you when it is time to run and when it is time to walk. Check it out - they are free.

Hi. I have been out of the loop with posting lately. I have definitely been working out. Right now I am trying to run FASTER....as my C25K that got me to the end, I was still running very slowly, walkers could pass me, and did. so I went to the trainer at the Y and asked how to increase speed and thye got me started on interval training, where you jog, then add in bursts up to 7.5mph on the treadmill, my comfortable speed is 5.5, so that is what I have been doing, most days, then some weight lifting and trying to get up to 15 miles on the bike. I want to take swimming lessons at some point and learn to swim, but my goal is a triathalon....not even to compete, just to say I did it.

Hi all

Wolfman, if you have been doing C25K every other day, you're ahead of schedule. I would take the rest day. If you get hurt, you could be taking many unplanned, unwanted rest days. Your determination is inspiring.

Oh man, do the podcasts ever help! I tried it once before without them and it was just torture watching the timer I was carrying around. I'm sure I looked pretty silly too (as if me running wasn't enough of a sight) and I almost ran into several people. Get the podcast!! For the safety of others if nothing else.

If it helps any, all you poor folks in humid climates have my pity. I think of you when I feel like making excuses or complaining about my running conditions. So your misery IS helping me.

I had the best time running with my students yesterday! They were so excited. I ran six laps (quarter mile track) completely surrounded my my little entourage. They say you should be able to carry on a conversation while you are running and I certainly had the chance to test that out. Kids are chatterboxes when you get outside the classroom. Some of the kids who stuck with me were the ones you'd expect, but I had quite a few boys who normally want very little to do with a teacher running with me. They would run ahead and then wait for me and I raced a few kids. We had them run/walk one mile and then they had their choice of other games and activities. Many of them wanted to keep running and a couple of kids did three miles.

I went straight to bus duty after PE (in my running stuff) and the new VP told me he used to be a runner but hurt his back, so now he bikes. He said he would ride five for every mile we run. One other third grade teacher was planning on running too, but forgot to wear a running bra so she walked this time.

All in all, a great success. We run again on Thursday!

W7D1: a labor of love. Tired and sore when I woke up this morning, I didn't get out on the trail until 4 p.m. instead of my usual morning outing. Lackluster run and my focus was missing. Surprisingly, my sore leg felt better AFTER the run.

Gina, waiting an extra half day seemed to make a difference!

Just wondering if any of you feel that running is easier on an empty stomach?

I usually have a 1/2 cup of coffee with splenda & a lil' heavy cream in the morning and I am ok to do 4 miles. Now if I eat breakfast or drink a bottle of water I can't make it past 2 miles.
I don't know why.lol

I find the opposite Naomi. But I think everyone has to find that thing that works for them. I have found that I have to fuel my workouts because otherwise I feel like I got run over by a truck afterwards.

May I join up here? I have been toying with the couch to 5k since I saw this thread 2 months ago. Bookmarked the site and considered it off and on (mostly off).

I used to run a few miles every night before I met my DH almost 12 years and two kids ago. It was the last time in my life I was fit and thin. I liked the way it made me feel and have tried several times over the years to get back to it, but have never made it past the first few weeks when it is just WORK to get into it.

So here I am at what seems to me a ridiculously early hour of the morning having just completed my first day

1) What week/day are you on? Just finished day 1 of week 1
2) Are you repeating a week? most likely I will be
3) Are you running for time or distance? time
4) Are you running indoors or out? outdoors
5) How do you feel? self righteously good and in need of a nap already

Well Today I kind of deviated away from the plan. I want to work on my speed a little bit so today I ran for about 15 minutes at a high(er) speed. I actually passed people today lol. I can't believe it! I tried to do a full 20 but I just didn't have the energy.

I will go back to the plan friday

WTG Jeanne! The first couple of weeks are difficult but once you get in the groove it gets better.

Just finished week 4 today! I am a little behind schedule as I've taken a couple of extra days off here and there due to weather or shin splints. But this is the big week coming up, I can't really see how it's all going to come together...hard to imagine going for 20 straight!

I talked to a friend of mine who has run for decades, many 5k, 10ks, half and whole marathons, and he says he *always runs 10 minutes, walks 1 minute, runs 10, walks 1...which sounds pretty good to me

WOE: Low Carb! Alternate Day!

Evening all,

I'm disappointed in myself. This was supposed to be my last week of the C25K, however, I haven't ran one day this week nor have I been following my eating plan. Right now I'm just darn frustrated with myself...and my life right now!

We had bad wind storms in Ohio and as a result of that have had no electricity for four days... Today was my first day with electricity...nothing was open, everything closed... I had just went to the grocery store the day before the storm and lost everything in the frig! Thankfully, my house only suffered minor damage, but driving around the city today it looks like a tornado touched down EVERYWHERE! Right now, day four, we still have 500,000 people without electricity. Schools are still out as well. We tried grilling some of the meat but just couldn't cook all of it so had to throw the rest out...couldn't find ice to keep it cold!

As a result, I've just been eating crap and stressing out! Oh well, I've got to get it together and perhaps run tomorrow... I'd like to get week 9 at least started... I'm currently bloated beyond belief! Overall, we're blessed because we didn't have much loss... There were four deaths in the city, trees falling on people...

Congrats to all the new members and to everyone for meeting their goals!

TJ

I am on week 3, in the morning I will do day two of it, I am very surprised that I made it for 3 minutes however the program seems shorter than the first 2 weeks so I think that helped me also running with my younger more in shape sister keeps me going I hope to make it where the rest of you are, running for 20 minutes and someday 30!

Hey everyone...Gotta say welcome to the newbies!

Gina...loved your story about your students and the group run. How cool is THAT! You should be so proud.

Wolfman, I've also noticed when I have an ache/pain, it usu lessens the further I get into my run. Odd, but that's how it works for me too.

Noemi, I agree with Christa, everyone is different. Some people need extra carbs to fuel their best endurance, others can do as well or better on a light meal/drink beforehand. Find what's right for you and stick to it.

Jeanne, you can attribute it to newbie enthusiasm, but I think this whole challenge is just plain inspiring so it feeds my enthusiasm. Running has a way of doing that to a person, you know?

Zinny, interesting point about your runner friend. Makes sense. There are gonna be days that we may need to break up our runs, but the point is: WE'RE RUNNING.

Kelley, my fav season is fall too -- hands down, love my autumn! -- and I'm REALLY anxious for my run tonight with the cooler temps, SO.MUCH.EASIER!

TJ, chin up. Sounds like you're a stress eater (I am too), and you'll be back on track in no time. Those first couple of days of getting back on the wagon are the toughest, and then it's auto pilot again. One thing about it, the cardio is gonna help get ya there.

W7D2: wow...just wow. If I have many more days like this, I'll make the Olympic marathon team in 2012! Okay, slight exaggeration, but honestly this was my best workout ever. Knocked a whole minute off my one mile pace! I was on a major caffeine jag (4 cups of coffee...could NOT wake up this morning) and I started out at a too-fast pace. Got winded but worked through it. Worked out with weights last evening so I was a bit tenative, my legs were very "tight" but no pain. Did some very good stretching. I actually completed the 5K course and burned an incredible 788 calories.

The next time I have a so-so run I will think back to today....and smile.

Thanks Twyla, I am definitely logging my food again, but haven't started jogging again... I have zero energy right now so hopefully I can get it together before the week is gone!
