Wall, you crack me up!

And just for the record, you are correct, I haven't been spending much time on the couch lately!

And you had me stressing out today when I read your banjo drunk reference....anything that remotely sounds like country makes me nauseous.

Say it ain't so!

I will have to listen through and prepare myself.

Hi, I just started the C25K tonight with my son and can I say it kicked my arse!! My DS (14) was the just wonderful, after awhile when he saw I was starting to get winded he slowed down his pace and kept time with me. He started to talk (talk - can you imagine, I was just glad I could still breathe)about goals and picturing the goal while I was running to keep me motivated; he is such a sweetie!!! I think I would have quit and walked the rest of the time if he wasn't with me.

So let's get started!
1) What week/day are you on? Day 1
2) Are you repeating a week? *already thinking about repeating wk1 since I feel like it kicked my butt*
3) Are you running for time or distance? neither, just to run; exercise
4) Are you running indoors or out? outdoors
5) How do you feel? a little sore but so happy I started!!

Lora, congrats for starting on your endeavor, and for raising such a fine young man.....that is so endearing that he is supporting you in this! Wise, big heart, that kid.

Pace yourself, and stick with Wk 1 for the full three times minimum, and it will come.

Good work.

Thanks Gina and Twyla - he is my sweetheart.

Feeling okay today, a bit sore in the waist and shoulder/arm area which I thought was weird. If anything I expected my legs to be sore.

We went to the pool afterwards to cool off, maybe the water helped?!?!

We are planning to go out either Wednesday or Thursday to complete day 2.

I'm really excited about doing this, I love that I can run anywhere and can't wait to build up endurance so I can just run run run....and destress and get that runner's high.

DS called to say he can't walk on his foot. It was bothering him last night after we got home but I thought he was just sore. It is the same foot he fractured last year but the same place. He says his ankle hurts. Don't know if I should take him to the doctor's or give it a day.

Lora, how's your son's foot?

.................................................. ....................................

Just finished my first Week 4, Day 1 session, and it wasn't as bad as I'd thought. The first run interval, regardless of what Week I've been on, has always been the hardest. Does anyone else feel that way? It's like my legs are lead until after the first run interval gets out of the way.

Anyway, instead of walking the entire five minutes at the very end, I walked for one minute of recovery after the second FIVE MIN session, then ran for 2 or 3 mins, then walked for another 2 mins. Felt good, but I'm quite SOGGY.

Wall, the banjos? Oh, mercy. Do help me. It was all I could do to keep going. This is the first of the podcasts that I've REALLY disliked the music. Up until the banjos, it's okay, but then it takes a dive.

Oh, well. I'm just pumped that I'm making it through this thing! Yeah!

I DID IT!!!!!

20 minute run that is!!!!! The last minute was terrible but I pushed through....counting down in my head like they do on biggest loser!

I don't like the music on the podcasts, couldn't handle it at all so I just use my own music and a stop watch.

I have been studying myself and wonder if anyone else has noticed this pattern. If I am very good with low carb and do my workout running on that I totally run out of steam after about 5-7 minutes and have to really PUSH the rest of it. However, if I eat carbs, whether they are good healthy ones, whole grain and fruit, or like today, a piece of pizza when I went out with the boys....I don't run out of steam. Please tell me I am not undoing all I do by fueling my run with carbs. on days I am not running and am really careful about carbs, but on running days I think I am going to have to add more fruit and grain. I know the traditional wisdom of having to fuel a marathon on carbs but I really thought that with low carb you could still work out hard...but it is not seeming to be true for me.

Lori, hope your sons foot is okay. I would probably give it another day of icing, at least 48 hours, take ibuprofen, do the RICE thing, and see how that works and if it is better before going in and paying for an XR. (RICE= rest, ice, compression, elevation)....that is what the doctor would recommend if you called probably, or they would do an XR then recommend that....

Christa, I totally know how you feel. I cannot do intense cardio workouts without a little bit of pre-workout carbs. I've tried. It does NOT work for me. I lag all the way through the workout otherwise. And keep in mind, we're burning the carbs off when we run, so you're not doing any harm to your weight loss strategy by taking in a few carbs before. Experiment with which carbs work best for you. Fruit gets into the system pretty fast, so that is a great option. The main thing, IMO, is that you're getting in a GREAT cardio workout, your best, and in the long run, you'll build endurance faster and you'll be doing your metabolism a favor.

Congrats again on the 20 mins!

PS - very nice going on the 20 minutes. big congrats on the milestone.
I'm not an expert with this carb/exercise stuff but I too have noticed that from adding some during or just before exercising it gives me a boost. Makes sense to get that instant blood sugar rise I guess.
Something along those lines... I switched from H2O alone to now I drink an electrolyte supplement as well. Thats been a recovery boost to me.

I start week 5 day 1 tonight...

oh, and I dont mean carbs = "eat bread" for anyone reading. what i do is typically eat a larger portion of salad/veggies that day of training

Thanks for all the good wishes for oldest DS's foot. We did wind up going to the ER yesterday and had it x-rayed. It is fine. They believe it is just a sprain but if he is still have issues in a few days they said to follow up with our pediatrician. Still can't figure out if it was from the running or something he did "hot-dogging it" at the pool. Oh well, as long as he's okay that is all that matters.

Day 2 of Wk 1 of my Couch to 5k training tonight. Wish me luck.

Christa,

Nice going on the 20 minute mark. I remember back when I was doing C25K back in March, running for 20 minutes made me nervous, but I eeked it out.

I notice this with carbs as well. Last night, the wife cooked whole wheat pasta and meat balls. I didn't want to argue about cooking my own dinner, so I just ate it. About an hour later, I did a 6 mile run and felt wonderful. So there is definitely something to be said about taking in some carbs before a workout.

Glad to know I am not the only one to notice this. I have also found that I really do better in just moderation...rather than high fat low carbs, the fat does not agree with me and makes my IBS worse. So I end up limiting my fat, eating low carb and basically have meat and veggies, then I run out of energy and I don't lose, well when I put my calories into fit day I am usually around 1100 calories and under 20 grams of carbs...no wonder I am not losing, my crappy eating disordered destroyed metabolism thinks I am trying to starve myself again! I am still working on the right percentages for me but right now I am just doing a rotating schedule of healthy foods.

Lori: Glad to hear his foot is okay....RICE really does work wonders for a sprain.

Congratulations on the 20 minute run!

I am TOTALLY with you on the carb thing. For me, I need to eat fruit. I've tried cottage cheese and yogurt, but I guess they aren't high enough. I do eat it with a fat OR protein (like peaches and cottage cheese) or I get shaky. That happened this morning.

Lora, great going! Your son sounds awesome! I don't think I could run with anyone yet. Be too embarrassed for them to see me sucking wind. Though, having someone there to call the paramedics could be advantageous.

I just finished week one this morning. Very glad to have accomplished that. I haven't looked at week 2 yet but I'm a little nervous about being ready for it.

When I first started trying to run, my 13 YO dd would go with me and the 17 YO dd with my husband. SHe would tell me, "Just make it to the mailbox, you can do it". Stuff like that, several times in the run. It is nice to have their encouragement.

Well, endurance wasn't so good today, I only made it a mile before I had to walk and then I "wogged" the last mile. I don't know why I couldn't do 20 minutes like I did before....oh well. It is hot here already.

I am finding that running at the park, in a 1/3 mile loop, bores me and I don't have as good of endurance, I don't know why unless it is mental...but when I run my 2 mile loop around the neighborhood I can run for much longer.

Day 2 week 5 tonight. Preparing for Day 3 on Sunday...

Been reading about the "Pose Running" as was suggested. Im basically floppin' one foot in front of the other, might as well think about how I do it and do it smart.

psage - I can always run further when I know others are watching. I think its a macho thing :P

Good Lord, I'm consumed in sweat. Just finished Week 4, Day 2. As hot and humid as it is right now, I'm surprised, but I hung in there and actually did a tad better than Day 1 of Week 4. Guess that's a good thing. The music is absolutely tragic. I actually like the music on the first podcase, Week 1.

How I needed the cardio today....ate crap last night and needed cardio to help mitigate.

I want to download Forever (Chris Brown) tonight. The tempo is perfect for cardio/running. Gotta figure out how to get my own music goin'.

Anyhoo, pumped that I'm still going in this thing............................................. ......... I just may make it!
