Thanks Gina. I have decided to repeat it until I feel ready. No pressure.

By the way, I got the book "The Courage To Start" about running. It is a good book so far,. It hits on so many points and thoughts that I have found myself having over the years.

Tonight is an off day for running, so my daughter and I went and walked a mile, just to keep moving.

Psigna, I know that I'm new to C25K but I think I can safely say that, like this WOL, this training program is a PROCESS and it's better that you're sticking with it and having slow progress than doing nothing at all! Hang in there and keep plugging along!

I didn't get a chance to come post yesterday but, yes, I finished W2D1!!! Oddly, 90 seconds wasn't as long as I thought it would be but, somewhere around interval #7, I was thinking "Ok, I think I would like to get off the treadmill now" but, thank God, I was able to push through it and finish. I'll see how things go tomorrow but I'm pretty optimistic that day 2 of this week will be better than day 1. I'm still freaking out about next week but still trying to remind myself to take it one day at a time and not think too far ahead.

By the way, what do you guys do on your off days? I'm so addicted to working out that I can't seem to give up the gym on Tuesday's, Thursday's and Saturday's (I do C25K on Monday's, Wednesday's and Friday's) but I do manage to fight the urge to try and jog on those days! I usually stick to my weight training and some limited time on the stairmaster, elliptical or bike but I'm wondering if this will hinder my progress in the long run. When I get up to running for longer times will the "extra" workouts keep me from going the distance or will it help? Your thoughts are appreciated!

I hope everyone is doing well and running your little legs off!

I hulahoop on the Wii on my off days. Man, that's fun!

I've been reading some running websites and most people there say they cross train on days they aren't runnin.

I'm getting VERY close to buying a WII cause they sound so fun! I'm thinking that it would be good exercise for my Mom since she is definitely not one to go to the gym!

Repeated week 3 day tonight. Was able to complete it, so I think I made the right decision to go back to this..

Off topic, I love this:

Hello all. I just stumbled across this thread and I must admit that this plan sounds very interesting.
It seems to me like it's a great way to stay motivated plus when you get through all of it you will have GREATLY improved your fitness level. I know that is exactly what I am looking to do.

Anyway I just recently started walking regularly and happened across this thread and I am really thinking I want to do it. I read in some posts on here that there are downloads that guide you through the program and tells you when to jog, walk, ect... I think that would be the best way for me to go about trying this. Can anyone please post a link to the audio downloads? Are they in real time?

Also I have a sort of silly question as well. I am a really big guy that basically has had ZERO physical activity for quite a while, well none up until recently when I started walking. So would a non-exerciser be able to do this program as well? Or is it too difficult for a "beginner"?

What type (brand/style) of running shoe do you recommend? I have a wide foot so please take that into consideration. Also, I do not have much money so the cheaper the better.

Sorry for all of the noob questions.
Thank you for reading.

Google is your friend: Podcasts

For shoes, go to a good running store where they look at your gait and find the right shoe for you.

You might be a little heavy for running, but maybe not. Try it and see. Maybe do week one for a month as your weight starts coming down. Then move to week two when you're down 20. Others may have better advice.

Painted: I second Paul. Go to a running store and get fitted. It will probably be pricey, but you don't want to hurt yourself with bad shoes. Also, start slow and go along as your body dictates. Several people, including me, have repeated weeks when we felt we needed to. Good luck, it's a great program. If it can get *me* running (the woman who used to say she'd run for her life, but only for a short distance) and enjoying it, it can work for anyone! Hopefully, you'll find, like the rest of us, that you actually look forward to your runs!

Well, all, I took a week off, unplanned. Last night I stepped right back into it and ran W5D2. I forgot how much better I feel after runs! I'm anxious about the 20 minute run next, though. There's a big difference between 8 minutes and 20!

Thanks for the tips.

I am downloading the podcasts as I type this.

I have decided to start trying the first week and see how I do. I am going to continue doing it until I feel ready to move to week 2 and do the same with that.

I figure I can just do this program at my own pace. Perhaps even turn the "weeks" into "months" if I have to. It may take me a while longer but at least I am doing it. In the end I am sure I will be a happier, fitter, and stronger person for trying anyway. LOL.

As for the shoes, I don't have much money so I am just going to use my old World Industries "skate" shoes for now and when I get some extra cash saved up I will get some proper running shoes.

Thanks again for the tips all.

Here's the thing. When you don't have the right shoes, your feet won't turn the right way when they hit the ground. Other parts of your leg/hip/spine will adjust in order to compensate for this. Then you end up with knee/hip/back pain or worse.

Really, I can't stress this enough: DON'T SKIMP ON THE SHOES!

A decent pair will cost around $80-$100.

Running really is a pretty cheap sport. You don't need a lot of the gadgets. But you do need the right shoes.

What I'm trying to say is: Invest in a good pair of shoes.

Did I mention that you really need to get fitted for the right pair of shoes?

I agree with Paul as well. I went to a store where they fit me..watched me run...the whole deal.... and it's worked out really well. They offer shoes that support you to the degree to which you pronate. Running does put strain on parts of your body knees, spine, etc....so it's good not to overstress them.

Well I was looking around today and did some quick research on the internet and I found some running shoes that seem like they may work for roughly $60.00 (online prices). At that price point it seemed like there was quite a few options available. I will be getting shoes as soon as I can afford them.

On another note I figured I would try to do week one tonight in place of my usual walk...ummm....yeah.....lol. It was tough. I have to admit that it was a LOT more difficult than I expected it to be. I wasn't able to complete the entire workout. I am trying to be positive though and just keep on trying anyway. I figure if I try to do it every day then eventually I will HAVE to be able to complete it. I am thinking I will just go at my own pace as it's way too difficult for me at my current fitness level.

Thanks for reading.

Paul,

You have the concept exactly. You are not in a race with anyone. You go at your own pace because only you know your body. It would do no good to go all out, not be able to move the next day, because then you would quit. I have to keep telling myself that it does not matter if I need to repeat a week, or stop for a few seconds and catch my breath. I am doing this for me, no one else.

I repeated week 3 when I started, and then tried to move to week 4. After 4 dyas of trying week 4, I finally realized that I was not ready, so I moved backt o week 3 this week. I can do week three, but it is not easy, so I will stay here until I feel confident to move on. The main thing is that I am moving, period.

Good Luck. You have already taken the first "step" (pun intended), to a linger life and a healthier you.

You are correct. Try not to get discouraged and keep plugging away.

You don't have to be in good shape to run. You get in good shape by running.

Hey Painted!

I follow this thread because I know I will be doing the C25K at some point in my future. I did a 5K back in April, just after I found out about this podcast. I walked the whole thing, and made it in just under 57 minutes. The funny thing is that I placed 2nd in my age division!! I was the last to cross the line, but I was the only other woman in my age division. I loved participating and I now have a 'personal best' to shoot for!!

As far as shoes go... I have a woman who is advising me on a monthly basis. She is part of our YMCA. After the 5K, I was experiencing pain in my ankles. She recommended that I get Cross Trainers. They have a wider base. I found a pair of $80 cross trainers for $40!! If you watch the higher end stores, they will have them on sale. This was the BEST investment. I've had little ankle pain since I've had these shoes.

At this point, I am working my way UP to the C25K. I purchased a podcast called Personal Running Trainer. I talked about it over here:
Not quite ready for C25K??? How about 1 mile in 4 weeks??

It may be too easy for some, but at 7 weeks, I am now doing Week 3. I am so proud of how hard I am working!! I really want to run/jog. I did this in my younger days and am determined to do it again!

Hang in there!!

AND BECKY!!

You are my hero! Congrats on the 5K!! That is truly so awesome. I know you must still be on cloud 9!!

Wooo hooo!!

I have been trying to mix it up and do something fun and different and challenging on Sunday. Last week, I put the treadmill on 5K loop. It took me almost an hour, but I did the whole 5K.

Today, I put on the first Week of C25K and jumped on that treadmill... and I did it!! I did the whole thing!! And I was amazed that it didn't kill me like it did the first time I tried it!!

Well, it has only been 7 weeks of working up to it!! I was going to continue doing the 4 weeks to 1 mile, but I am ready to move on!! Becky, you totally inspired me.

I am working on the treadmill 3 days a week and doing water aerobics 2 times a week and then I do something different on Sunday. This week will have a few interruptions... I have a dinner to go to for my 12 year old son's birthday on Tuesday, so I'll miss WA and on Wednesday, I am going to visit with my out of town girlfriends. We have a yearly outing around our birthday's and Wednesday is it. So, I'll probably miss the treadmill.

I've started having more pain in my heel lately. It has bothered me for a while, but last Sunday, after I walked the 5K loop, my calf tightened up on me something fierce. I was able to walk/stretch it out after about 3 or 4 minutes, but it stayed sore, like a Charley horse for a day or two. Anyway, after that, it seemed the heels began to hurt a little more, especially in the morning, when I first get up.

I looked up plantar fasciitis and did some the the stretches before I walked today. Does anyone else have this going on. Two of the less helpful recommendations were:

Lose weight
Don't run

When I started C25K, I had a little bit of this. I made sure I stretched before I ran. If I felt it cropping up during exercise, I'd stop and stretch the foot for a minute. It would usually hit one foot more than the other.

After a while, I guess my foot got stronger and I don't hardly ever see it any more.

I had no pain in one foot today and only a little pain on the other this morning! I think I just need to keep stretching that muscle!! Youtube has some interesting videos on stretching for plantar fasciitis... the first one is a little weird, but this is one of the things I did yesterday.

Here is a shorter version of this type of massage. This video will not embed, so here is the link:
[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYfU_1VPcpo] Massage Techniques for Plantar Fasciitis

This is what I did after my workout yesterday. This video goes over the details of what causes plantar fasciitis. Then about half way through, she goes through a stretch routine.

Yay!! I would have never thought this was a tight muscle in my FOOT!!

It is sooo hot here today. I have been putting off moving from the road to the treadmill, but I might have to do that today. Right now at 511PM it is still 91.9 degrees. The humidity kills us here in Mississippi.

I attempted week 4 day 1 again tonight. I did all but the last 2.5 minutes of the last 5 minute run. I feel pretty good about it. I am going to have to figure out what is happening on my IPOD though. The custom playlist that I created does not play in order!!!

I am going to create another one using that program that someone suggested here or on another post. It seems to work better than a playlist I guess.

Hi runners, I put the thread on hold on June 6, my Mom was in a horrible automobile accident (my aunt who was a passenger was killed) so I haven't been able to even start. I have been getting walking in going to the hospital garage to her room and now she's been moved to rehab (different facility) and still getting walking in, though not as much as when she was at the hospital. But I didn't want you guys to think I just dropped out, I fully intend to join you all when things calm down. Mom had to be care flighted to the hospital, a heating/ac fan hit her from behind (she was going 60, the van 65) on an interstate and he hit her from behind, (she was in the middle lane of a 3 lane highway) and it sent her across the left lane, though the grassy median and c
