I've looked at One Hour Runner, but I'm actually thinking of doing Jeff Galloway's 10k training program next. It's flexible and seems very do-able. I'm planning on looking at both of them more closely and maybe tweaking them a bit to fit my needs, but I'm leaning towards JG right now. I had been interested in HH's (Hal Higdon's) 10k program, but it's too intense for me I think, since I'm just beginning.

I know that you posted this many months ago, but if you are still here, Could you share what you did to make the podcasts? I just started this program, so I haven't even gotten a chance to read all of these posts yet, but I know that I will get bored with this music soon!!!! I started on week 3 because I have been doing pretty much this for the past 3.5 weeks. I have now completed w3 d2.

Thanks!!!

Well, W7D1 is complete. It was not a great run, but I finished 2.4 miles. I ran slower than I have been so it took me 32 minutes, but I finished. I was really concentrating on my neck, head and shoulder form this morning. My shoulders have been so tight and my neck has been hurting the last few runs. I did some reading last night and I think it's because as I get tired I tend to lean everything (head, shoulders, arms, chest) forward -- willing myself to the end of the run, so to speak.

Anyway, today I ran slower, but I really focused on keeping my arms and shoulders loose...my head and upper body in a nice line upward -- not forward. I think I was focusing so much on it, I didn't run as fast, but I think over the long haul it will help to keep practicing that and keeping it in mind. I'm not stressed or worried about "form" in terms of my footfall or kickback, etc., but my upper body needed a little tweaking. I don't want an aching neck to keep me from running. Knees I can understand, but not neck! LOL!

I'm looking forward to Monday's run. It's like each run is a new opportunity to do better and get stronger. I love that.

Can I join your challenge. I'm that couch potato that wants to learn to run. I have lost 15.2 pounds with Weight Watchers and have 52.8 to go to get back to my Lifetime goal weight. I had lost 70 pounds in 1976-78 and kept it off til our daughter was 4 (she's almost 26 now) and I gradually put it all back on. So, at 51 I'm working to get it back off again. I haven't exercized is so very long. We got the treadmill back that DD borrowed after she had her baby (that baby is going to be 2 on June 10) and son-in-law broke 2 screws off that holds the monitor when they were moving it to our house last week, he said the wires are still intact, I HOPE that he didn't break it entirely. We have an elliptical machine but I can't get past 1 minute at a time, I'm out of breath and it kills my knee. So, I'm hoping that DH can fix the treadmill tomorrow so that I can start using it. I'm going to start on level 1 program and do that for probably 2 weeks and see where I am then.

Thank you in advance for this thread and letting me in on it ( hope that you do or I'm be REALLY embarrassed). Have any of you been total couch potatoes and are now successful runners and have any of you lost a lot of weight????

Depends what you mean by "successful"

Not terribly long ago I was convinced that I'd never run again. I thought my knees couldn't handle it since they were always sore after I ran. I thought I'd have to walk for exercise the rest of my life.

Then I tried the C25K program... and failed. Back to walking for another six months.

Then I tried the C25K program again, and actually followed it to the letter. I did the whole thing on the treadmill so I could get my joints used to it. I finished it and started running on the road once in a while.

Fast forward a few months... I'm up to 4 miles on the road and am training for a marathon on October (see my signature). So far I'm injury-free (knock, knock).

I didn't have a lot of weight to lose when I started. Only about 15-20 pounds. I currently have 5 to go and won't go away!

Hope this helps.

Psigna. Yes, I know you from the WW thread. Good to see a familiar face here.

Thanks for the info Paul. I will have to check that out that you're talking about. Is it a book or is it on the internet? i've heard a lot of people on this thread and a few more talking about it.

DH didn't get my treadmill fixed BUT he did get the drivers seat to my car fixed which was MUCH more important!!! We used my car when we went to pick up DGD2 up last night cuz her Mommy and daddy were running errands and she wasn't feeling up to par, just getting over the flu, so we used my car since mine has her carseat in it and when DH adjusted it (I'm 5'2 and he's 6' so he had to push it back and it wouldn't hold. Plus he's been doing a lot of work today on the computer for his work, so I figure I'll just wait til next weekend and hold the nagging for now. haha.

I'm going to try to get more walking in this week so that I can at least get some exercise in. talk to you all later.

I'm a couch potato who hasn't excercised in 2 years. I had to repeat week 1 a few times. Even still, It's a GREAT workout. Nothing wrong with repeats. Take it slow and you will do great!

Do you mean the C25K program? That's what this thread is about.

C25K = Couch to 5K.

Hello all!

I finished W7D2 this morning. I felt great. My run was SOOOO much better today than it was on Saturday. Much more energy, stronger, happy (albeit tired) at the end. I ran 2.8 miles in 31:13...so right at an 11 minute per mile pace.

I don't know why the numbers matter to me. I just like having something to compare to the next run. It helps me gauge how I'm feeling and how I'm doing. One of the things I love about running is how self-competitive it is. I know I'm never going to actually WIN a race...but I love setting new PRs and thinking about how much stronger I am getting each time I go out. OR, when I don't have a very good run, I like trying to figure out why

As we're nearing the end of the program, what is everybody going to do next to keep going?

^Good question.

So let's get started!
1) What week/day are you on? Week 1, Day 2
2) Are you repeating a week? n/a
3) Are you running for time or distance? Distance!
4) Are you running indoors or out? Out
5) How do you feel? I want to get rid of these legs! But as far as running, I'm a little nervous and unsure right now.

What are your goals for running?

Are you satisfied with running 30 minutes for your cardio?
Do you want to run marathons? Triathlons?

I want to run a half-marathon. (Sort of scared to say that "out loud", as it seems so impossible. But I know it's not. I'm a pretty focused person and I'm really, REALLY enjoying running. I'm especially challenged by the idea of longer and longer distanced, and not so much speed.

SO, I think I'm going to finish C25k and go right into a 10k training program. I already have 3 5ks scheduled (this month, August and then a 3rd on 9/1). I'll try to find one or two good 10k to races to participate in during the fall months, and then shoot for a half-marathon somewhere next spring (around the 1 year anniversary of my first few weeks of C25k).

Does that seem reasonable? Thoughts? Also, Paul, curious as to what training program you're following for the marathon. I'm comparing 10k plans from Runner's World, Hal, and Jeff Galloway...and I'm not sure which one to commit to.

Hey all! I'm back from Disney and ready to get back into the C25k program. I think I'll repeat week 3 to get back into things since it's been a week since I've done a run. I'm anxious to get back into it!

Actually, I think you're selling yourself short. Half-marathon is very reasonable. It seems like a lot now, but it's really not. Looking at your stats, it's not unreasonable to entertain thoughts of a full marathon. You're only 20 something pounds above goal weight. There are plenty of marathoners in that category.

Team In Training has it's own training program. It's meant to train total newbies to run 26.2 miles in about 4-5 months. It's also a pretty conservative program so that people don't get injured in training.

There are lots of good programs out there. One book you might want to pick up from the library is "Four Months to a Four Hour Marathon". You can also pick it up really cheap on Amazon

Amazon.com: Four Months to a Four-hour Marathon,Updated:...Amazon.com: Four Months to a Four-hour Marathon,Updated:...
One thing that really helps is running with a group. So you might look into running clubs in your area.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for the feedback. That makes me feel like it is even more attainable. I'm really passionate about the idea of running longer and longer distances. Okay, I'm going to keep at it and train with the intent of a half mary in the spring, and then who knows...maybe a full marathon next fall. Wow! That would be awesome. I'll definitely look up that book you mentioned, and I just recently found a great women's running club. I'm hoping to hit their next monthly meeting in July.

I am repeating week 3, which I officially started on due to the fact that I was already doing pretty much weeks 1 and 2 prior to this. I did not feel ready to move to week 4. Hopefully after this week I will move on. I am in no hurry, I want to do it so I am listening to my body.

W7D3 finished. On to week 8.

I finished week 7 off this morning with a 6am run. We had HUGE storms here last night (tornado warnings, massive lightning, etc.) and I was afraid it would still be raining this morning, but the skies were clear and it was nice and cool. I ran 3.2 miles in 35:40...and that did include a 2 minute walk break in the middle because of the stupid traffic lights. I felt really good.
Just 11 more days until my 5k.

Happy running ya'll!

Go for it! I'm at least 30lbs overweight right now and am having no problem with this. Make sure you download the C25K
