Hello runners.

Today was my second week of one hour runner. I'm supposed to be running 30 minutes 3 times a week. Today I ran 3 miles for the first time! It took me about 46 minutes. I average between 3.9-4.0 mph on the treadmill. It just seems so hard for me to get any faster. I guess maybe in time. I'm in that older crowd too, so I'm not worrying about it.

Aloise: I love that story! Slow and steady wins the race, as they used to say.

Jazzy

I have been checking my heart rate and would like to keep it around 150... but it is usually 160-170... at that point I try to slow down. I don't worry too much becuase I have a heart murmur, so I think that's why I record a higher rate. I can say a few words outloud and I that's a good way to tell if you are at the right level.
oh! I am so glad to hear you say that! I, too, have a slight heart murmur.. so, maybe that is the reason for the higher rate. but you are right, I felt fine when it was up there. I think if it was really a problem, then I would be feeling bad.

but.. like you, I seem to need a little more sleep on those nights.

I think I will call my doctor just to make sure, anyway.. (she is a runner, so, I think she will be for the running - she had no problem with my taking tkd in the past).

well, I did week 4, day 2 today.

but, like a dingbat, I forgot to bring my sheet with the times. I have an excel sheet where it automatically calculates the elapsed times, so I know when to switch from walking to jogging, and vice versa for all the weeks.

I've always been a bit absent minded... I remember my mom saying to me when I was growing up, "you would forget your head if it wasn't screwed on"

anyway.. I thought, "I remember the times.. kinda. I will just figure it out as I go along".

so.. I did:
  1. 5 mins warmup walking
  2. 3 mins jogging,
  3. 1.5 minutes mins walking,
  4. 5 minutes jogging,
  5. 3 minutes walking
  6. 3 mins jogging,
  7. 1.5 minutes mins walking,
  8. 5 minutes jogging,
  9. cooldown walking
that last 5 minute lap just seemed soooo long. but I kept slowing it down when I would feel I was getting winded, and I did everything.

well, I got home, and checked with the workout on the coolrunning site.

I tacked on an extra 5 minute jog... no wonder it felt so long..

but.. hey, now I'm stoked! I think I'll be able to do this!

Just finished week 3 day 1. I DID IT. Didn't think I could but I gave it my all and it wasn't too bad. At the last jog my heart rate was way up there like 160, but I felt OK. Legs are not cramping as much as the first two weeks. Who would of thought this old lady could run for 3 minutes. Sassynut you're scaring me about week 5. It will be almost halloween when I do wk 5 are the ghosts and goblins going to case me Good job Aloise a little extra never hurt anyone.

would anyone be interested in me posting my version of the workouts for each week? I found it helped with the treadmill because I just put it up there, and looked at the next time to switch, rather than adding the time in my head and trying to remember the time (and your mind can play tricks when you are about 1/2 way thru the jogging.... did I calculate switching to walking at elapsed time 8:00 or 9:00? must have been 8:00 )

I'm really interested in starting this. I was wondering how it has impacted everyone's weight loss. Does it seem to speed things up?

Hi runners. I'm starting the program today (for the second time around). I've read through the thread and noticed a few of you use timed podcasts to track your time. Do you find these podcasts on itunes or where? I looked around on itunes but I must be looking in the wrong place, lol. Can anyone help me out here?

Well I just finished Week 1 Day 1 and boy did I break a sweat! I feel great! I want to get a stop watch so I can time my intervals more accurately. I've been playing tennis for exercise, but this seemed much more effective.

My yellow lab got quite the workout too. It looks like him and I are both out of shape

Welcome Virgo and Court it is so good to have new people. I was the baby here (not age wise). I don't use a stop watch or the podcast, but I'm sure someone else will answer you questions on that. I use my treadmill and I just look at the second hand on a watch. I started doing this as an add on to my other work outs to jump start weight loss. What has happened is I LOVE it .

You know, I lost track of what 'week' and 'day' I'm on. I know that's sad, lol!

I know I jog tues/thurs/sat and plan on keeping that jogging schedule in Round rock, texas when I move as well. (Im in idaho right now for those who dont know).

ANYWAYS, I did my first 30 minute jog today.

mile time was 14.22 and at 30 minutes I was just over 2 miles.

I did w1 d1 yesterday and it was pretty tough! I am proud of myself though because when I tried the program before, I think it was around this time last year, I couldn't jog the 60 second intervals AT ALL - I think my first week I jogged 15 or 30 second intervals. But I made myself do it right yesterday and it felt good! No way could I have done that a year ago. My schedule is going to be c25k on Mon, Wed, and Fri and weights on Tues, Thurs, and Sat.

Des - my mom lived in Round Rock for a short time last year, then moved the short distance to Austin. I never got to visit her when she lived in R.R., but Austin is my favorite city ever! If R.R. is anything like Austin, you'll love it.

Way to go Court
For you too Sassynut

I get to did again tomorrow. It feels so good know that I can jog even if it's just 3 minutes at a time. My husband thinks I'm nuts, but I tried to explain to him that the small things in life make me happy. Just wait till I'm as good a Sassynut.

Welcome to our new participants!

Just finished w8d2... I ran on my treadmill sat and sun, but didn't count it toward the program because I took some walk breaks. Actually I went for 30 min (it's supposed to be 28) because I was on a slight decline and thought why not?

Most of us start this program not sure that we can work up to this amount of time, but take it from me, Desdemona and Jazzy, you CAN! Even if you have some difficulty or repeat a week early on, don't let that discourage you! I repeated week 4 and thought, how can I run for 30min straight when I can't even do a 5 minute interval? Well here I am... I am not a 'natural' runner by any means. I'm short and well-endowed and have a heart murmur... in short, if I can do it I'm sure you can too!

I haven't lost any additional weight, but my legs are getting really tight and my tummy is smaller... pants not so tight around the waist, and I don't feel bloated... sleeping sounder and longer too! I love the benefits of running!

I've been losing weight while I do this but it's part of my 'cardio' program and I'm doing other things too. I sure hope my calves start to get smaller though. I want some knee high boots!

court613, congratulations! I know what you mean about the first week being sooo hard. but.. it gets better.

just remember.. you can always slow down if your breathing gets too hard. It is more important that you do a pace where you can keep on going than it is that you can do it fast. You can always work on "fast".. later.

yes, for the "well-endowed" (I like this description... much better than those of you with big hooters), a decent jog bra really helps. I got mine from title-nine. they rate them for keeping the jiggle down.

I've noticed I'm sleeping really soundly on the run days. yes... a nice benefit.

I have been at my setpoint for a long time.. just kind of accepted it, because it seemed that no matter what I did, I might go down a couple of pounds, or up a couple of pounds.... but always end back at my setpoint.

but.. now I am losing! not a lot.. but it has been steady. 1 lb a week? but.. it is staying lost.

so.. I can't attribute it to the increased calories burned during running (how many calories can you burn during a slow jog). I think it is more that I've "shaken something up" in my metabolism. I am more hungry in the morning than I've been in ages, and I'm sweating more easily (not such a great thing.. but an indicator your body is working better).

so.. I just use a better deodorant (crystalux) and am thanking whatever it is. and.. hoping it will last!

Welcome to the newbies and others are doing a great job!

I am running about 40-45 minutes, still at a slow pace. I read about slow heart rate training. You keep your heart rate lower, and you burn fat instead of glucose. Eventually your body gets more efficient at that, and you can run faster while keeping your heart rate controlled. My current speed puts me right there, so I'll just keep doing what I'm doing, and hope over the winter to gradually get faster.

Jazzy
