Excellent work MintQ8. From what the experts here have said, slow seems to be the way to go!
Love the encouragement in this place Totally proud of everyone doing it tough in the cold. I start my run at about 6am and it's already 20deg - which I think is about 70deg farenheight...Did W3D3 today and felt like I was struggling, felt really awkward. Don't know if it's still that my body and butt hurts from the weekend....so I'll do a D4 of it then go onto W4D1 on the weekend. |

Welcome, Vicky! Give your mum a hug when you see her next. I'm sure she's told you what a great program and a great group this is
And 5.5 mph may not be that fast for you, but for me, well, someday I hope to work my way up to it lovinlee, like I've said before, no harm in repeating a day or a week until you're ready for the next one. I repeated W4, then did a week of W5D1 and two days of W5D2 before moving on to W5D3. janamonkey, are you thinking about what to do after you graduate? One Hour Runner has been a pretty good continuation, coolrunning and runnersworld have some other training programs too. Faith, you're getting close too! It's amazing how fast it goes once you get started. MnM, so sorry you were under the weather, but good for you for starting up again! Great job, mum22, keep up the good work and before you know it, you'll be saying hey, I jogged 20 minutes straight! One Hour Runner Week 10 Day 2 done! It was a toasty 51 degrees, up from last Friday's low of 11

Vicky! I have found this thread to be so helpful to me! Those are the exact speeds I do on the treadmill. Seeing that it can be done, watching all of you is so helpful and inspiring! MnM, hope you are feeling better. I did W3D1 today, I think I may be doing W3 twice. But the good news is, my pants were falling down!!!! Embarrassing, yes. But exhilirating is a much better way to feel about it!!! I have avoided the scale for a little while now as I am afraid to get discouraged as muscle weighs more than fat. Now that I am getting into this training business, I thought I would go by the way things fit! Going shopping for new exercise pants this afternoon. |

Shelly - You are doing so great! I cannot wait until I get to that point. It must feel really good.
Mum22 - Congrats on the pants falling down! LOL Thank you all for the well wishes. My cold still isn't completely gone, but I'm getting there... I was doing W1D2 this afternoon and it was HARD. I couldn't believe the difference between Monday and today. I thought maybe I was getting sick again or something. I was sweating after the 4th interval. So, just before the 7th interval I looked down and there it was - 4% incline! I forgot to put it back down after my walk yesterday. Once I set back to 1, I was cruising right along and ready for more after the 8th interval. What an idiot! ![]() |

welcome vicki! wow 5.5 is pretty good. when i'm on the treadmill, i usually only run at 6.0 when i'm on the treadmill. congrats on losing your pants Mum, i lost mine too! i started wearing 38's this week, and said goodbye to my 40's because i could drop trough without unbuttoning them keep up the good work jana, shelly, lovin, & faith, and everyone else that I'm forgetting ![]() hope you feel better MnM, i hate being sick, thats one thing i've noticed since starting Atkins and runing that my health seems sooo much better, building up my immune system.

Hey guys! Keep up the good work, you are all doing great!
![]() Just wanted to let you know that this D2 of my W7 may not be happening afterall today. On top of my maybe having developed a shin splint in my left leg I also discovered last night that both my calves were quite swollen! I've mentioned in passing that I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia back in '05 so the swelling could possibly be related to that. Will be keeping an eye on it...I'm going to take it easy but may do a lighter day like from say, from W6D1 or D2. I'm playing it by ear. I may have been pushing myself a bit too fast whereas I should've repeated a week. I don't believe I was quite ready to be up to 25 minutes...well, my mind was but maybe my body wasn't! |

FaithM- keep yourself healthy!
I too had a shin splint in my left leg- I had to get new shoes to correct it- and take a few days completely off from running.Currdog, Vicki- I had to get a smaller size pants too! It's annoying to keep pulling them up all the time ![]() Itsnot2L8- how many weeks are in OHR? Is there any milage specifications with it? I ran for 28 minutes yesterday- with a Huge hill. we took a wrong turn to this hill I couldn't even ride my bike up. Even though we CRAWLED up the hill we did it! It was a much much better run than the day before. That was just terrible.

Thanks, Jana! I've decided to completely take the day off and likely tomorrow too, just to be on the safe side. The pain is mostly when I do stretches. Did you notice anything like that with yours or did it hurt to walk on it too? Also, my shoes are brand new. I just bought them a couple of days before I started the program. Hopefully it isn't a matter of having the wrong type of shoe. I've heard some people must have a particular brand or they have problems.
...Congrats to you for making it up to 28 minutes! ![]() Last edited by FaithM. : 02-22-2007 at 11:43 AM. |

FaithM- My shin splints started around week 4ish. It just started hurting about 10 minutes into the workout, and then when I got home I noticed my left shin was swollen and was tender to the touch. I knew it was my shoes- I was running in a pair of tennis shoes I've had for ages. I took a few days off and when it wasn't tender anymore I got new shoes and have been pain free since. I don't know about brand or anything I just got a pair of shoes designed for running from a running place in town. I've been searching around the web and sometimes shin spints can also be averted by insoles, slowing down, or stretches/exercises. there's a thread in the exercise board about shin splints that has some stretches to help. I do them every time before I run and I haven't had any problems! HTH!

I did it!
Finished the One Hour Runner program this morning. I jogged for an hour straight. From now until the April Fool's Day Virtual 5K, I will jog 45 minutes MW and 3 miles Fridays, that's my commitment. The only thing that might hinder me are spring thunderstorms, I will not go jogging if there's lightning about. In California, thunder and lightning always seemed to keep a polite distance, here it's terrifyingly close
Faith, take care of those shins! I know people have preferences for one brand of shoe or another, but the important thing is that it have the right kind of stability for your gait, whether and how much you pronate (foot rotates inward so that the weight is borne mainly on the inside of the foot) or supinate (foot rolls outward with an elevated arch). Chris, congratulations for getting out of the 40s! Good luck on Week5 Day3, although it's more determination than luck, and you've got that. Janamonkey, OHR is ten weeks, the first few weeks are 30 minutes 3x/week, then it adds time (day 1 is always 30 minutes) but doesn't consider distance. If you google Cool Running One Hour Runner it should come up. MnM, that's funny. Always check the incline! Mumm, I was thinking this morning I should get some new running pants, the ones I have are getting a little long. But it'll be shorts weather here soon, and by the time winter rolls around again, I hope to need a smaller size Keep it up, everyone! |

Hi everyone. W3D2 down. It was easier today than D1. Congrats, tsnot2late! That is awesome! 1 hour, I can't even imagine. I understand about the lightning, it stricts too close here in the midwest as well. Faith, I was told when I got my newest pair of shoes, that your everyday shoes may play a roll with shin splints as well. You may want to consider insoles for everyday. Hope you are better soon. It's always great to here how everyone is doing here!!!

W5D3 complete. 20 whole minutes without stopping. I thought it was going to kill me at the time, but after getting through with it, it wasn't as bad as i expected. was hoping to make 2 full miles in 20 minutes, but only got to about around 1.8. guess i'll get there next week. strong wind may have slowed me a bit.
I can't say enough about good shoes. dropping $100 on a good pair is a great investment. considering what a gym membership costs, or any fitness contraption, when all you need to run is 2 good shoes. In other news, i lost 7 lbs this week. I had been in a mini-stall by my standards (3 lbs in 2 weeks) but I guess it all caught up this week. I knew i was in for something when the 40's fell off me, and glad the scale caught up. shelly, big high 5 on your OHR. mum congrats on getting through week 3. Faith, sounds like a good plan backing off a bit until your legs get back to normal. great job this week everyone. |

Faith - Shin splints are terrible. I have had them, but mine were because of bad shoes. I hope you are better very soon!
Currdog - 20 minutes AND 7 pounds??? Great job! Jana - Congrats on making the hill climb. I'm glad it was a better day for you. Mum - I hope you found some new pants before yesterday's run. Shelly - An hour? *faint* LOL I'm jealous! W1D3 completed yesterday. My cold is gone. I'm really looking forward to W2! |

OK now I am back, I just ran 40 instead of my planned 36! I am finding that once I get past the first half of my run it gets way easier, I get into a groove and can just keep on going! Great music helps a lot too.
Have a fine weekend everyone!! |

W6D1 complete. I ran faster today with the run walk intervals than i did last week with the 20 minute run. I run a trail that is 1 mile long, so i can tell when i'm at 2 miles. on W5D3 it took me 20 minutes of running plus 4:10minutes of walking to cover 2 miles. today i covered that 2 miles with 17:15 running and 6 minutes of walking. Now i call that faster, unless i walk faster than i run (which is a possibility)
Only one more interval left then i'm a full time runner! quiet around here, hope everyone is having a great weekend, look forward to hearing your success stories. |

Morning!
Love the new pic currdog! man, you can see some major difference!! congrats on the 20mins. I was looking at the program on Saturday and nearly died when I realised I'ld be trying it next week! Everyone else - you are all going great guns!! It's great that everyone is giving it their all I'm so with you guys on needing new pants. I've been wearing 3/4 length track pants and they are getting so baggy that they are flapping uncomfortably!I did W4D2 today. It's funny how at first 90 seconds seemed to take forever to run, and now it goes way to quickly when you walk to recover! Is it just me, or do other people listening to the podcasts say mean and nasty things to the bloke when he tells you to get ready to run? hee hee. People will start going to the other side of the road when they see me coming!

Hey All! Happy middle-of-the-night from Ms. Nightowl herself!
This is the closest I've gotten to this computer the entire weekend and now I don't wanna let it go and go to sleep, LOL!Thanks for the well wishes guys! I went on ahead and jogged a session on Saturday after taking Wed, Thurs, & Fri off to rest my legs. By then the swelling was down and I've no pain at all now in my left leg since (so hoping this means it wasn't shin splints). I had a plan to go in and see my Dr. if things got any worse, they didn't so I didn't have to go in, thank Goodness! Saturday, we went back out to the tracks. It was so hard holding myself back when I wanted to keep pushing forward. Out of that 25 minutes I took a 60 second break twice along the way. I've had thoughts of going back to week 6 for this coming week, so we'll see. There only are 4 weeks left till the Austin Capitol 10,000 and I don't want to have to back out. Besides already having paid my registration fee, this the 1st year ever I've been able to even think about doing this. In the past I was either sick, pregnant, working, or just plain too heavy and out of shape to even consider it. NO, this is my year! *add determined stance* ![]() Jana -- I'm glad you were able to get the shin splint problem resolved. Also, I'm going to check out that thread on the Exercise Board you mentioned. Shelly -- WOOHOO! on finishing the OHR Program! Your schedule now looks like a mean one! I am SO proud of you and look up to you!Mum -- WTG on getting W3D2 down! I've actually ended up wearing my jogging shoes for everyday use (tho DH, who jogs, has told me that isn't the best thing to do). Once I got them I just hated going back to my old ugly ones. I will look into getting insoles to see if that helps.Chris -- WOW, you are really moving up!! ![]() MnM -- Thank you! Hopefully I won't be having anymore problems if I keep it light & steady. I'm sorry you too had to go thru that! Good luck to you going into W2...you are doing fantastic! Sue -- 40 minutes?! Even tho I've a long ways yet to catch up to you, I agree that it seems to get easier once I've gotten past that first half (in my case which would be after the first 12 minutes ).Lovinlee -- You're right, it does seem like the walking periods go by twice as fast as the running time does! As for the podcast, I can't say because I've never used them but I'm sure if I did then I'd be cussing that dude out! ![]() |

Hi everyone. Finished W3D3 today. Faith, I too, sometimes can only get to the computer late late late and don't want to get off. Then I am tired and unmotivated the next day. Ugh. Lovinlee, today I did get really really annoyed with the podcast guy. First time and I assume it won't get better. But I am so glad to have the podcast!!!! Have a good day and week everyone! Great new pic, Chris!!!
