Zaza, I began with 10 in 10 also, did it 3 - 4 x per week, ate clean, added cardio 3-4 x a week (30 mins), and a couple sessions per week of UB weights. Did the trick for me. Amazing transformation in only six week's time -- quicker than I'd seen with any other form of LB training in my years before. I LOVE CALLANETICS.

DeDee, yes, I meant weights. I began using 5-8 lb dumbbells at that time, 3 sets of 15, for delts, triceps, biceps, pecs, and did pushups at the time. You can't go wrong with pushups, because they target many UB groups: chest, back, delts and triceps.

As for weights, once you can do 3 sets of 15 without effort, you want to move up to a heavier weight. I would work your UB 2 to 3 x per week for best results.

If the gym isn't your thing, there are many DVD's you can begin with, or there are websites that have videos that show you proper form and explain the technique for each muscle group you're targeting. Let me know if you want the links for those.

Twyla:

Does callanetics help with back fat or do I need to work on that with weights also?

Yes, it DOES help with back fat.

But if you try adding in some reverse flies or one-arm bent-over rows*, you will get good results. You'll be focusing MORE on building muscle in the upper body (back), which is where Callanetics doesn't offer huge advantages.

(*This is a strong muscle group, so if you do them, make sure you use heavy enuf weight that when you get to rep 15 of the third set, you're fatigued.)

Diana, what do you mean by "this"?

Callanetics? Yes. Do it no less than 3 x a week for best/quickest results.

UB weight training? 2-3 x a week.

Good luck girls (newbies)! I started with 3-4x a week of Callanetics and 3 days a week of cardio, ate very clean and plenty of water. You will see a transformation in a very short time. Hope you love it and it is as good to you as it was to me!

I got my DVD yesterday, but wanted to watch through it before starting. I have one question: On the video one exercise shows her sitting on the floor holding onto a bar. Since most homes are not equipped with a ballet bar, what to use??

Hi everyone!
I just found this website! I was googling "Callanetics" and found you guys! I felt like crying when I found this thread!

This is my first post on LCF! I just found you!

I just decided to start Callanetics again. It has always worked for me in the past! I first did it in 1987, to tone! Now I need to lose weight and tone!
I have gained 20 pounds this past year

I am learning so much about Callanetics just from all of you! I have the 10 in 10 and the legs one...I didn't know that their were others! I'm excited to order them, but I think I will first get in to the Callanetics "tape" that I have now!!

I'm so excited I found you!

Robin...

Diana, you don't need a bar. You can use furniture in your home, a cabinet, your sofa, whatever.

Kellie, you and Diana need to join us over on the August challenge. There's a new monthly challenge each month, and lots of tips/inspiration shared there to keep us accountable.

Head on over!

I was inspired by this thread, so I ordered my DVD of 10 in 10. I did it last night and oh my God it was so challenging. It looks sooo simple when you watch it, then you start the excercise and you are like 'holly cow' when will the counter be at 100 already.
I am going to try to do this at leat 3 x week, with added cardio.
For those who don't have a barre, I find that my dining room table and chairs make great subs LOL

help plss

Hi everybody first I'd like to comment on how those of you who have posted pictures look amazing!!! (pixiegirl, watchmeshrink, marisol and all the rest) it really is impressive .. I have a question i'm hoping you can help me with. I don't need to lose any weight because i'm naturally thin i just would like to tone . How often should i do callanetics? I have the 10 in 10.

More importantly, when i'm doing the hips/behind section i don't feel my "behind" flexing (i don't know how else to put it). I definitely feel something, but it doesn't feel like it feels when you are doing lunges or some other weight-lifting exercise. Am I doing it wrong?

Pls help! Thanks so much

Eates, not having weight to lose, you should see dramatic improvements with consistent workouts of Callanetics.

I would recommend no less than 3 x a week of 10 in 10 (or Evolution). I began with 3 to 4 x a week for the first six weeks. Huge improvements.

As for form, crucial. You want to learn to relax all other muscle groups and let the energy be in the leg/muscle you're focusing on at the time. Lengthening the muscle is highly effective as you do the pulsing (counterpulls).

I'm cutting/pasting a post from Sandra, our certified Callanetics Instructor, addressing this issue, that may be helpful to you. Her instructions below are part of the key concepts on form for maximizing the effects of Callanetics.

You may want to do a search from the August challenge for Sandra's posts, and then you can quickly skim through them to find helpful tips on form as you begin. She's amazingly helpful and knowledgeable.

Best of luck to you.

"To get the most out of the exercise - as with all - it is important to pulse only while keeping the stretch out through the counterpulls.

On the first exercises with bent knee; the counterpull is between the sit bone and knee. Your aim is to always create tautness through the muscles that you are training so that the pulse gets right in to the deeper muscles.
So, as you pulse keep the sit bone lengthening back and the knee lengthening forward. This action alone will prevent you from curling the pelvis.

Remember, absolutely no curl when doing these two hip and behind exercises. Your low back will be in a neutral position - not curled and not arched.

Also, check that as you pulse your keep the stretch out of the pelvic floor through the spine and crown of head. Doing this isolates the muscles in the buttocks and the back of leg even more. So never under estimate the effect of keeping the counterpulls in place. That is why it is reiterated again and again throughout each exercise."

Wendy and Rabzi

Most people begin with either

Callanetics Evolution

or
Ten Years Younger in Ten Hours,

and both can be purchased from Amazon, and some people have found their DVD's on Ebay.

watch me shrink,

You have inspired yet another to try callanetics! I just got the videos yesterday (10 in 10 and AM/PM) and plan to begin tonight - I was planning to do callanetics every day, with some upper body workout also. I have the pilates ball and a video that does upper body/legs/lifting to go along with that as well as a couple of videos for ab's that include a lot of upper body lifting in it.

My plan is to do the AM every other morning followed by the PM on that same night as well as add in one of my upper body workouts. Then every other opposite night to do the 10 in 10 (an maybe an upper body video).

I am wondering your thoughts on that. Too little, too much? I consider myself at least 60 pounds overweight and HATE IT and want it gone ASAP!

SO, there is my plan on that, any opinions are greatly welcomed!

Thanks and everyone keep up the great work and I hope to post some fantastic before and after pics in the future!
