1000 minutes of exercise in September, plus a new challenge for veteran exercisers!!
It's a new month and time to renew our 1000 minute exercise challenge! If you are new to the challenge, welcome!! The more the merrier!! If you joined us in previous months, great to see you back!! Aren't you feeling great? Be sure to check out the extra challenge at the bottom of this post.
For those of you brand new to the 1000 minutes challenge, here are the details: Whether you are currently working out or not, this can be for you!! You just work toward 1000 minutes of exercise *whatever* you choose. It can be workout tapes, hitting the gym, Curves, walking, running, swimming, yoga, stretching, Callanetics, Pilates, weight training, aerobics, you name it!! And there is no thread you have to report to, etc. All you do is put a line in your signature showing your progress (see mine below for an example), then change your tally every time you work out again. Then we can all see other's progress when reading posts. Of course, if anyone is wanting to, they could certainly start a supportive thread on the challenge board. If you easily go over 1000 minutes each month, how about upping your challenge to 1100, 1200, or more minutes...it is your choice. Please remember though, this is a challenge, not a competition among participants. You should only be competing with yourself! I look forward to seeing you all with your minutes in your sig lines!! Please post here with any questions. ![]() Now, if you've been counting your minutes for a while, and would like an extra challenge, read on! I started counting my exercise minutes last September, so I have now been at it steadily for a year. I am happy to say that exercise is now an important part of my life, and it will be that way from here on out. The 1000 minute challenge still keeps me motivated, but I was thinking of what ways I could further challenge myself to make exercise an even bigger part of my life. I thought I'd share my thoughts with those of you that would also like to work on something a little more. This challenge has two aims...mix it up/try something new and make informal exercise a bigger part of your life. Ok, let me explain in detail. Vital to making exercise a part of your life is keeping it fresh, varied, and challenging to both your body and your mind. Cross-training! This also ups the fun factor and avoids an exercise rut or exercise boredom. It's also best for your body. So this month, make sure you try something different where your exercise is concerned. In a cardio rut?? In addition to your usual cardio, mix it up and try something new - swim laps, take a spinning class, take advantage of early fall weather you may be having to take a hike. Already getting a variety of cardio?? Do you already include strength training?? If not, invest in some inexpensive dumbbells, and check out a book or video/dvd with some basic strength training moves. You will be helping your bones and upping your metabolism at the same time!! Cardio and strength training already a part of your routine?? Are you neglecting flexibility training or core work? Try Pilates, yoga, a stretching tape perhaps. You might surprise yourself - and the older we get, the more this type of exercise will help us in our everyday lives. For those of us who already include a variety of cardio, strength training, and flexibility in our workouts - really stretch yourself and find something new to try. I took up Yamuna Ball Rolling last month and plan to focus on making that an important part of my daily routine this month. Ok, so what about increasing informal exercise? I challenge you to find ways to be as active as possible in your daily lives - ways that don't necessarily count in your minutes. Our bodies were designed for motion. Many of us (myself included) have sedentary jobs that put us in front of a computer for hours each day, etc. Even if we work out regularly for 30 minutes or an hour or more each day, much of the time are bodies are not moving like they should be. No, don't quit your desk job , but find ways to fit in motion and activity whenever you can. Take the stairs, not the elevator. Park in the furtherest spot in the lot. Go for a walk with your family after dinner instead of watching TV. If you watch a TV show, bounce on your stability ball or do lunges while watching, or at least during the commercials. Take computer breaks at work during the day and run the steps in your building, or go to the restroom and do sink pushups (thanks to another lcf member for that idea). Take that dog for a walk...play tag with your kids...go dancing on Saturday night...the possibilities are endless!!Ok, if you are participating in these extra challenges, good for you!!! Let us hear from you on this thread. What new types of workouts are you going to try this month?? How are you adding more "motion" to your everyday life?? Hearing about others will be inspiring and give the rest of us more ideas, so please don't be shy...post about your experiences. Above all, have fun!! This challenge is not designed to make more exercise a chore, but rather a regular and normal and enjoyable part of your life!! Thanks for joining us!! ![]()

I'm in again of course.
M goal this month is 1250. I changed August's goal to 1250 after mid month, but I will set out in Sept to make it. I have already been doing some of the things for the extra challenge. I have added variety to my workouts - focusing on toning more and more. Along with the WATP, I have collected many of the Steel workouts led by Tamilee Webb. I do my elliptical once a week. My children hate it when I park far away when we go to the stores, but it's such a habit now. I no longer circle around for the closest parking spot. I get to work early now that I have to take my dd to school every morning. Maybe I can do a little walking then to get extra movement in. I'll see how that goes. Quote:

I just walked for 70 mins. It was to be 60 mins but the course I took gave me an extra 10 mins. Plus the last half was against the wind all the while pushing a stroller.
Im feeling sweaty but good. 60 mins of 1000mins for Sept challenge. Last edited by Jellybean28 : 09-01-2005 at 01:47 PM. |

Well, the month's pretty much over where I am, and I'm happy. Got over 2000 minutes for the first time ever. This is mostly because I took up weight lifting this month, so that's 60 minutes three times a week in addition to my usual karate regimen.
I'm going away next month, so it's going to be a lot lower than this one. I'll sure try, though. |

I didnt get my full 1000 in. I have been keeping track though.
730mins out of 1000. I think it should be a little higher because one week I think I forgot a few days. LOL. This coming month definetly going to try harder. I am starting to feel the benefits of the exercise. |
