I'm a couple years late I know, The Secret

I DVR Oprah every day and she's had a couple shows that mention The Secret. I never really thought about it much, it was big like 2 years ago. I saw "The Secret" in red fancy cursive everywhere. Anyways, Oprah talked about it again today so I decided to watch the video. Like most people I'm skepticle. And it could be seen as a little stalkerish/obsessive. You are supposed to think about what you want, like if you want Brad Pitt, you mentally think you have him and what it feels like and the universe will drop him at your door.....
Anyways, I digress. The Secret also talks about positive thinking and listing all the things you are thankful for and what you appriciate. I know it is common knowledge to do that, but watching the movie gave me a refresher. I've started doing that and it amazes me all the negative things I catch myself thinking. I do it with out realizing that I"m even putting myself down. Now that I am aware of this I am making steps to correct this. When I think a negative I think about a few positive things (I'll say them out loud in private).
I don't think "The Secret" is going to make me a millionaire but it did make me think about my internal dialogue and how self defeating I am a lot of times. But now that I'm concious of it I can change it.
Just wanted to share a little self reflection with the gang.

I love that movie, it changed my life and DH's. (and he is the ULTIMATE skeptic)

We try to watch it once a month and have also had a lot of friends and family watch it.

I watched it today too. I was big into the whole "creative visualization" back when Shakti Gawain wrote about it and I never quite got it. When The Secret came out I thought "this isn't anything new" but I still didn't practice it. I've read it but I don't find it to be as helpful, how-to ish as I think I need.

I bought "Excuse Me Your Life is NOW" which is a "sequel" of sorts to "Excuse Me Your Life is Waiting" without knowing it was a sequel. Apparently the "Waiting" book is more of a how-to do it and it teaches you to connect your FEELINGS to your affirmations or desires and I think that's what will make the difference. If you don't believe it in your heart you're not going to get anywhere.

I also went to a seminar held by the author of the book "Law of Attraction" (Michael Losier) and it was also more of a how-to. One of the things he emphasized and used as an example is if you stare at your 300lb pasty white balding self in the mirror and affirm "I look like Brad Pitt" you know in your heart of hearts that's not true and THAT'S the feeling you attach to the affirmation. He teaches you ways to think that don't allow that self-doubt.

I'm in a place right now where I really need to start focusing positively and I am going to start doing some of the things I've read about. Reading it alone isn't going to help me.

Geesh, I'm a rambler today.

I've been big on being negative on myself in the past, it really is amazing how when you look for the good and think positive how it can affect your outlook and to make you feel better about yourself and want to try to achieve more.

I enjoyed watching the show too.

i'm a huge fan of the secret. i think the real secret to the secret though is that you have to be realistic at the same time. like pp said, its a lot harder to look in the mirror and think your pamela anderson when your 300 pounds, but its much easier to look in the mirror and think your looking pretty good for what you have. and to KNOW that you are going to get even better looking really soon. I've used the laws of attractions many many times for many things and have had lots of success. I relate it to seeing a psychic, either your going to ignore everything they say and none of it will come true, or your going to work soo hard to make it all come true. IMO the power of suggestion and attraction work hand in hand, and are huge factors in life!

...sending positive thought your way! lol

Hi Anna, can you share with us what you learned from the seminar on how to attach something good to the affirmation? ( I need the how - to also!!)

To me, there is no secret.

In the Bible, in Proverbs, it says 'As a man thinks, so he is'. and "Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks' (and the Bible has been around far longer than a book)

That's not a secret! That's the truth!

Dancing on the path and singing now you got away.
You can reach the goals that you have set from now on, every day.
There is no way you would go back now, oh no, those days are past.
Life is waiting for the one who loves to live, and it is not a secret

I agree with Dyan.

I am not however a fan of the Secret because it specifically focused on the what (you want) than the real great point of positive thinking. And for me, The Secret goes against my religious beliefs with the emphasis on The Universe will deliver...eck. I think it also sets people up for disappointment.

However, positive thinking is critical. I come from a family that complains a lot. THere's so much negativity that unfortunately, it seeped in. Having a trainer has been great for me because she's helped me see when I'm negative and how to change it. (When I realized how it affects others...just as others' negativity affects me...that was when I decided it wasn't worth it.

I do believe if you believe you can, you will, believe you can't and you won't. Whatever you believe, you are right.

Some days thinking positive is more of a struggle for me, especially when fear, doubt and insecurity seep in, but the more you work on changing it, the more it becomes your new nature.

THANK YOU. Every word you said is what I wanted to say but I had no clue how to say it (picture that!). Positive thinking is critical. But the only Secret I need is Jesus Christ. And he aint no Secret. lol

This is an awesome post - our pastor talks so often about us being called to "contentment" - being happy with who we are and what God had chosen for us in both rewards and struggles.

Not always easy, but definitely part of the grace we are called to show ourselves and others!

My sentiments, exactly. It hasn't been a secret, for over 2,000 years.

Today was a day for positive thinking.

During training I was doing squat thrusts (use dumbells, jump body into pushup position, thrust back up and stand). I was scared. I told my trainer it made me nervous. I feared that the dumbbells would roll or something. Or I couldn't do it. Well, she knows that the fear was an old fear not based on current capabilities.

So, the current me, voices anxiety, then jumps in and faces it. And of course, I could do the squat thrusts no problem. The old me would have said "I can't"....

One other thought. The Secret would have you believe that if you imagined yourself thin, you could get there.

Never worked for me.

Instead, I think positively and do the work for the result.

Get my drift?

But, if you don't believe that you will get results from that work, you probably won't. A person still has to work, to get the results for which they strive, but if they don't believe the results are possible, they will fail.

  • Person #1 says,
"I hear this low-carb lifestyle really works. I guess I'll give it a try, but I won't be able to give-up my sugar and flour,
so I know it won't work for me."

  • Person #2 says,
"I know this low-carb lifestyle really works. I'm going to give it my all, so I can succeed, as others have done."

Which one do you think will succeed? One can't just believe it will happen and then stand around waiting for it to happen. You have to personally apply those beliefs and work toward the goal, also.

I don't know anything about The Secret but.........Every night before my children go to bed we talk about what we are grateful for. And it's not material things. Just my observation but grateful people are happy people.

I get what you're saying but you miss my point.

I believe the results can come from the work, not the wish.

In my belief system there is a warning, and I believe it comes with consequences, about having anything to do with what the Bible calls 'spiritism or mysticism'. I do absolutely believe that you draw things to you that your heart and will are after, this is totally in sync with christianity. The thing is...each approach has a different source. JMHO of course. btw-The warning is in Deuteronomy 18. Not hoping to stir any feathers here, just respectfully stating my opinion. And guys, in defense of the One who loves us most, he only warns us about things that will hurt us, not to spoil our fun. And by the way, yes, i have been to the website, and checked out the secret and have great respect for the motives of those who espouse it.

What is very interesting about people’s reaction to the book’s subject is similar again, to Atkins off the cuff comment.

It is bad for you…

It will kill you.

Now, we know that every one’s body will react differently to different diets

because we are all our own little planet of glandular and hormonal soup with different amount of muscle and fat ratios.

The book was for a grabbing public, interested in shallow visible success.

It was for monetary gain.

Surely we are above the ABC of the index in The Secret. We have our own dreams, we have our own needs.

We have different ways to grow; we have different pathways in our brain, we, each one of us, process things uniquely.

What offends a group, on the other hand, is the beginning of a minute opening, a want for the non materialism of this world.

There is nothing wrong in The Secret.
