DD called terrified for her Dad

First off to refresh those who do not go to the Playground. My DH has been in great pain. The MRI showed that he has 3 disks that have bone spurs on them that are compressing onto his spinal cord and he has a 3 inch area with no spinal fluid surrounding the cord. He has already lost sensation in his arms and legs. The surgeon said surgery is his only option or he faces permanent spinal cord damage.

Ok to the subject of my post. DD works at a college. She mentioned her DD's issues to a nurse who teaches at the school who immediately blamed Atkins. She went on and on how that too much protein causes bone deposits. I told my daughter that so many people are so wrong about Atkins. It is not all protein. I said to her. If he had a grilled chicken sandwich for lunch and no fries instead got a salad she would have said he had a healthy lunch. But my DH had 2 grilled chicken breasts no bun and had a side salad. What is wrong with leaving the bread off? Told my DD we eat better now than we ever had before. Our diet doesn't consist of total protein.

The medical community drives me up a wall.

OUGH!!! How frustrating. You are right, so many people are wrong about atkins. I have never eaten so healthy in my life and the few people I made the mistake to tell go off on me telling me how Im gonna make myself sick? WTH how? by eating lots of veggies and healthy protein?
I hope your daughter looks into this diet more and learn it to get some peace of mind about her dad.

Oh man, Nita, your poor DH - I feel for him - back pain is horrible. I hope they can relieve his pain with the surgery.

And your poor DD - WHY must people add insult to injury? Good grief!!

Pay no attention to the ill-informed.

Actually a very 'common' condition (that is getting even MORE common in younger individuals...always thought to be a condition of geriatrics) causes calcium deposits. It's hyperparathyroidism. I have bone spurs and calcium deposits on my bones and in my internal organs. I have Paget's because at the 'ripe ol' age' of 32 I had a tumor on my parathyroid diagnosed. It'd been there for a long time even then. It spilled calcium into my bones/body.

Even to this day (over 20 yrs. later) whenever a new spur/calcium deposit shows up, my doctors know WHY. Usually when a person has bone/calcium deposits/spurs the very FIRST thing that is done is a blood level calcium (there's also a newer test for this). So, that nurse should learn more...if I had been told by your DD what your husband has...that would be the first thing I would have thought of (usually ENT's and endo's would look for that...I know several people IRL who've gone ahead and had the surgery your DH is going for that weren't checked for blood calcium...until they heard this was a common cause.

My best wishes to your DH, yourself and family that surgery goes VERY well and he's feel better soon!

Pam

I work with SCI patients and trust me, we DO NOT blame diet for bone overgrowth. If anything, typically diet is totally ignored (but that's another rant). Lots of protein post surgery will speed his healing. Hopefully his is going in for surgery soon. My prayers and thoughts are with all three of you.

The Atkins diet is also responsible for the Great Depression, the assassination of JFK, global warming, the recent real estate crisis, and the insurgency in Iraq.

From the wife of another back sufferer (my husband was medically discharged from the Army as a result), hang in there. It is so tough to watch your husband in that much pain.

I think I convinced her that this woman was wrong but it still bugs me. DH's blood pressure has never been this good. We do eat healthy very healthy. We don't live on eggs and bacon for goodness sake!

This is ridiculous... Tell Miss Nurse if anything, high protein diets have been blamed for causing bone LOSS! Not bone deposits.

Tell the nurse to either figure out how to be compassionate and supportive of a young girl in distress or mind her own darn business.

My doc told me my blood sugars (after the 5 hour test) were seriously far too low and that I HAD to stop my low carb life style....

Ignored that.... as I feel fine... had the test for diabetes as part of my annual check. i did have the symtom of being thirsty all the time... later found out this is due to my Celexa...

Everyone is entitled to their opinion... but it is just that .... in most instances...

Skeeter I hope the surgery goes well! Some people really don't like atkins, it baffles me. My sister inlaw just told me she hates it. That it's terrible, I think it's because she couldn't stick with it.

My 80 year old grandma just had this exact procedure done at Riverside in Columbus and 1 1/2 months later is doing WONDERFULLY. Good luck to your DH and my grandma wasn't ever on Atkins and that's silly for anyone to say the reason for the deposit.
