Meditation and/or stress relief methods
There was discussion on another thread about starting a thread for meditation or stress relief methods.
I am starting this thread up, hoping that others will join that know more about, or are willing to learn. I know nothing, but have always felt it would be an excellent thing to know/learn. |

Well done iakaren for starting the thread
Today I walked downtown today for some exercise -- good for stress release. Bought my farm fresh eggs and veggies to take of myself. Looked at the art galleries, fed my soul. Signed up for pottery possible classes trying something new! Talked to lot's of stranger-- as I was pushing two chihuahuas around in a red stroller we had a conversation starter-- avoided social isolation. AND bought some used books on meditation and stress relief. I learned a bit about it in school and have meditated and done some yoga but haven't used it as much as I'd like so I thought I'd brush up on the basics. Well, except for this morning because we inspire each other to take care of ourselves. Aren't we great! (Positive affirmation ) Personally I want to address the mental, physical, social, emotional and spiritual sides of life to keep it in balance and fight off stress. I'll see if there are some well written instructions for meditation. There are some good resources on the web. Anyone who meditates on a regular basis jump on in.

can you recommend any meditation books or dvds on yoga? I am truly needing something besides Xanax for stress relief.

For yoga I'd recommend trying a teacher for just a couple of classes at least, that way the teacher can correct your form and you can avoid injury. Many studios offer Community Classes a couple of times a month that are at a reduced rate or offered for a donation as a community service and to get folks to try yoga, that's also a good option if you're on a budget. Pick a beginners DVD I like the GIAM series and stay away from flow or power while you are learning the poses. They move too quickly from pose to pose IMHO and you are too rushed if you don't know the poses yet. Who needs yoga that rushes you and stresses you out!! Try the library and see what they have then you can try some out for free. There were some VHS tapes at our local used book store today on Yoga and Tai Chi, that's a great cheap way to try them too. Good Luck and Namaste!

I got a Thai Chi video for horse riders. Haven't watched the whole thing. Maybe this will get me more interested, or motiveated, or whatever it takes.
I will see if I pick up things to pass along. I thought the idea (whoever said it on the other thread) about staring into a candle flame for 15 minutes and emptying the mind was a possibility for me. I might get that fit into a day. (I know that "if you use time as an excuse, you probably just don't want to do it that bad") but seems like I am too busy to take time for me. Personal issue......

Meditation Instructions: Start with 10 to 20 minutes I like to put on a cd that has environmental sounds for the background. I pick a track or two that is as long as I want to meditate. That works as my alarm.
1. Find a quiet private place. 2. Sit either upright in a chair with arms and legs uncrossed or sit cross legged on floor or pillow. If you lie down you may fall asleep. 3. Close your eyes or find an object on which to focus your gaze. The object should not be distracting. Don't focus on a hunky photo of Brad Pitt. You might focus on a candle flame for instance or maybe a picture of a leaf or something calming and neutral. 4. Concentrate on your breathing. Don't control it as a beginner, just feel it go in and out, in and out. 5. Empty your mind. This is the hard part for most folks. When you think of something just let it go, don't think about it. Put the thoughts that enter your mind aside. Don't get upset that a stray thought came in your mind. They will especially in the beginning. Just concentrate on your breathing. 6. Some people choose a Mantra. That might be a word or a sound to repeat out loud or in your head. Joy, Ommm, mmmmm, nnnnnnn, love. Just don't pick one that sounds like work or makes you anxious. If I sat there and said thin.... thin..... thin... I'd start counting carbs and getting stressed ![]() 7. I keep going until the sound stops. OK that's my take. Others please post. WE can take the best set of directions and carry them over every month. I just figured I get something down. We can rewrite as we go. |

How will I manage my stress today
Off to do a little yoga with meditation. Read a little more from a humorous book I bought yesterday and listen Public Radio Garrison Keillor and the ilk make my day and make me laugh too. Plan ahead for the week do a little cooking and get some projects done for work so I won't be swamped during the week. |

Did Rodney Yee's AM Yoga this morning. Good stretching buy very few real yoga poses. Almost a pre-yoga workout, but I am so out of shape it will be perfect. Starts off with 3 minutes of guided relaxation and ends with meditation. Only complaints-- you are just getting in the 'zone' they are playing soft music and BAM they go into a commercial for Yoga Journal or something. Got my karma all in a knot. So next time I will switch off machine and put on my own music and finish the meditation that way.
Funny story-- I got everything ready: gave the dogs some bones filled with peanut butter to keep them occupied, closed the drapes, turned the ringer off the phones and stretched out on my yoga mat for the guided relaxation. My chihuahua, Lily, ran right over and curled up on my belly. She thought it was nap time. I laughed so hard I hurt her feelings! You know how little dogs get that insulted look when you laugh at them? Which made me laugh even harder. Poor thing thought I was lying down for a snooze and she wanted to cuddle. She wouldn't stay off me so I finally had to crate her. She is very angry with me right now. |

That's funny, Rory!
What I will do for stress management today: Do a few chores so that Monday can start relatively stress free. Start a sewing project. I love sewing and it uses a different part of my brian. Read an enjoyable book. Try not to spend too much time on the computer. Yoga. |

OK---I am ready to try this. I am working in the office some today, so tomorrow wont be so bad to look at that I can't even get started. And I am going to stare at a candle for 10 minutes. I know something would interrupt if I tried for 15.
I have an office in the house, and people start calling as early as 7 in the mornning. This can ruin a train of thought when working, so I know it would kill quiet time. Maybe, since it warmed up, I could try it out in the barn with the cats and the dogs. They are not as disruptive as the phone............ But no candles allowed in the barn, so would have to come up with a new focus idea, and no music out there....... Wish me luck. Hope everyone is having a great day. Lovely weather here. May the ice be gone soon!!!! |

iakaren - you can focus on anything. maybe a nail sticking out of the wall of the barn or any "neutral" object.
rory - i have to keep my cats out of the room when i do yoga. they immediately crawl on top of me or under me in plank. they love it. sometimes i put out an extra yoga mat for them, but the second they see me on mine they assume it is a better mat. funny cats. |

OK here's a thought. Can you turn the ringer off the phone and turn the volume down on the answering machine for 15 minutes? Would anyone know? Would anyone really care? What's the worst thing that could happen?

but I may try just learning to ignore the ring and let the machine pick up during "my" time. Will probably give that a try. Could just take it off the hook for 10 minutes. That should work. Duh!!!! Last edited by iakaren : 01-06-2008 at 03:05 PM. Reason: additional thought |

Guided Meditation
Free Guided Meditations on the web. 3 to 10 minutes long. They can be down loaded. I wonder if you can download these on an MP3 player? I don't have one but I'd buy an inexpensive one just for this kind of thing.
I don't know anything about the site so I am not endorsing it but i have tried the meditations and haven't found anything 'unusual' about them, . I mean the mediations are not advocting selling all your belongings because aliens are coming to take us to an alternative universe to live in perfect harmony with little green monsters or anything like that. Just standard breathe deeply and relax stuff!Meditation Room |

Well there are 122 views so someone is reading the posts. So I will sit here and talk to my self if you don't want to join me,
but you are more than welcome!!! I'm going to keep reading and posting what I find from my research and maybe it will catch on. I'll be meditating tonight and doing my AM yoga tomorrow. I tried meditating last night but I fell asleep! I bought a new yoga DVD but the player must need cleaning because it won't play. I've been listening to my Oceans Sounds CD at work when I get stressed, I don't know if it's helping with the stress but I do seem to concentrate better when it is on. I enjoyed the thread on self hypnosis and have been thinking of trying one of those CDs. What have you been up to. Any barn meditation? |

I'm here, I just haven't had anything to add.
![]() I did start working out today, which I know will help my stress. I've been some yoga poses everyday, but not a full DVD or class. I do cobra, child, downward dog for my back. I also do the cat stretch and I can't remember the name of the pose that is the opposite of cat when you "sag" your back. I'm trying to drink herbal tea at night to de-stress. |
