Here's a news update: Forecasters lower predicted peak level for B.C.'s Lower Fraser River...
Thu Jun 7, 11:14 AM VANCOUVER (CP) - Not every resident of the Fraser Valley, east of Vancouver, is celebrating the latest forecast for the Lower Fraser River. The River Forecast Centre now estimates the river will peak in the mid-six-metre range, by Monday at the latest. That's almost a metre below earlier predictions and it means severe flooding is less likely. But the predicted level is still high enough to swamp residents living between dikes and the Fraser River, and residents of the Abbotsford community of Glen Valley remain on evacuation alert. The City of Abbotsford website shows evacuations could begin when the river reaches the six-metre mark, and that level could come by later Thursday. Abbotsford expects to issue evacuation orders if the Fraser River reaches 6.3 metres at the Mission gauge. Dozens of homes have been evacuated in northwest B.C. as the Skeena, Bulkley and Nass Rivers continue to flow over their banks. The northwestern B.C. city of Terrace remains cut off from all but air traffic, as a slide east of town and high waters to the west have stranded its 18,000 residents. The upper Fraser River also continues to rise between McBride and Prince George, where residents of a small number of homes were ordered to leave on Tuesday when water began flowing into yards and fields. And the Liard River, on the B.C.-Yukon boundary, is the latest to cause concern as a flood warning has been issued, affecting residents of a First Nation community living beside the river. Overall, at least 800 homes remain on evacuation alert. God Bless,
