Lousy treatment from new doc because I'm fat!

This is going to be a bit long I think--warning!!!

This morning I went to a new ob/gyn. I needed to establish a relationship with someone new since I moved to Oregon 2 years ago, as I have been using my internist for this stuff.

Well, It started with the nurse. She told me she needed to get my height and weight. I told her my weight and that I had just weighed one hour earlier and that I was 5'10. She says, "you're not 5'10"! I said, "Well, I've been 5'10 since I was in Junior high school and at 52 that was a long time ago". From there, she must have said that I SURE didn't look 5'10. What a freak!

Anyway, the doctor comes in and he's about 5'6 (I could eat soup off his head) and totally buff. I had been told by my internist that he is a runner and runs about 50,000 miles per week or something like that

He says: let me check your blood pressure again because it was 120/70. I said, Oh, that's high for me because it's usually 96/66. He said, "I find that hard to believe"! I asked why and can you believe he didn't answer me!

He took it again and it was 120/70. He just went hmm. Well, I told him I was just looking to establish a new relationship and that I didn't have any pressing concerns blah blah blah. He said he realized I was diabetic.....and I said, "I am not diabetic, where on earth did you get that from?" He said he read on my form that I had taken glucophage last year and ONLY diabetics take that!

I explained that I had been in the hospital for a week with deep lobe pneumonia and that they gave me massive i.v. doses of steroids and that it wreaked havoc with my blood sugar and they gave me insulin and glucophage to help it. As if he didn't hear a word I said, continued about how I have diabetes!!!!!!

And, he barely made eye contact with me.

Let me tell you this. I have seen those programs where people put on fat suits and go out in the world and get treated shabbily. I always thought to myself, "hmm, I've never experienced that". Well, today I did. I have no doubt in my mind that this guy to one look at me and figured that I was a wreck. His attitude was rude, and he did nothing but make assumptions about me.

I ended up in tears and finally got up and said, "from this conversation I can tell that this is not the kind of connection I am looking for and there's no need to continue this conversation". I put my shoes on and he said, "I'm sorry I upset you", and I said, "no you're not, you actually worked pretty damn hard to achieve this result!!".

That arrogant you know what!

edit: I just noticed you're 5'10"... I'm 5'11" and my doc is a woman, and taller than me!!! She really understands it when I say how tall I am. :P

I can understand your grief!

I got a new OB/GYN a few years ago. When they used the speculum I said it hurt and the Dr told me that it was because of my weight. And that they couldn't get a good swab because I was too fat. I WAS DEVISTATED!

As for the doctor, I'm so sorry this happened to you. I have had my fair share of crappy doctors who put me to tears. Ironically, the ones who made me cry, were the most unhealthiest of them all (severly overweight, huffing and puffing, SWEATING, etc).

I'm so glad you stood up for yourself. You are paying him to service YOU! You go with your bad self!!! Now go find someone who will truly listen to you.

Love the new avatar! Good doctors are hard to find. Good for you standing up for yourself.

So many people would sit there and take it. After suffering through 2 obnoxious male gynecologists, I vowed not to ever go to another male gyno. They just don't understand us women and I've found them to be very brusque in typical male macho fashion. I am on my third female gyno (the first one I had was the best and she moved to New York. I still miss her

) and have not had any problems.

Dr's and nurses espiecally from where i come from believe they know everything and you know nothing of your own body
Escuse me doc. but i have been living in this body for sometime now.

Marie, good for you for standing up and letting him know you had NO intention of hiring HIM to be your MD! That makes my blood boil. I work for two GREAT family practice docs (husband and wife) and I wish you lived closer - I'd get you in with our female, who specializes in women's medicine!

Keep looking - I hope they didn't charge you much for that kind of treatment....

And to think these are "professionals". One would think they would have to pass a "bedside manner" course. I have been called morbidly obese, etc. Heard it all and been treated like garbage. I know how you feel. I just wish I had the guts to walk out and stand up to them. YOU GO GIRL !!!!

I like your attitude, girlie. You respect yourself and when you learned doc didn't, you ditched him. More patients need to cop your attitude. My internist laughs sometimes, and says I know more about new medical stuff than he does! You just need to find the right ob/gyn. I like women doctors for this "area", too.

I hate when doctors don't listen!!! I have left many doctors in search of "the one".... and your experience is what led me to want to become a doctor. There are slim pickings out there when you're looking for a doctor who treats you well and listens.

Find someone else!

So sorry this happened to you!

About a year ago, I had a breast lump and was sent immediately to a surgeon. I can't stand getting new docs, but this guy was great! He was very overweight and quite jolly. He asked me if I had had any recent weight flucutations. I said..."oh....just about 150 pounds." His jaw dropped and asked me to elaborate. When I explained that I had lost all of that weight as a single mom of three kids and that I did it with diet and exercise alone, he said these four words that meant so much to me...

"You're my new hero."

How I felt that day, in the middle of my medical crisis is how our health care providers should make us feel...understood, heard, confident, hopeful.

Stupid DR! I hope you realize that he's just one person and don't become cynical. That's easy to do.

You are a good, beautiful, strong and despite his assumptions, healthy person. Don't let anyone tell you differently.

gosh I thought a GYN would know Glucaphage is used in many for people with PCOS...not just diabetes

That doc deserved to be verbally punched by you!

You laid it on the line.

Bet no one else has ever done that to him. An honest patient who wasn't afraid to say exactly how she felt. YOU are my hero!
I am flabberghasted that he's permitted to "treat" others. I am in total awe of what you said. To have had the presence of mind to get those words out is awesome.

I'm more the kind of person who leaves a situation then comes up with all the right responses when the door closes behind me.

I'm just sorry you had to endure that kind of miserable thoughtless treatment. Hope you find a better doc soon.

Keep searching for the right doc! They ARE out there.

Our family is so very blessed in this area! But we have searched long and hard to find the physicians who "click" with our family.

Don't be discouraged...and keep "interviewing" until you find a "click"!

I do want to say that this is not a problem you'll only find with male doctors, though. I have a male gyno, and he is the sweetest, most awesome man on the planet. His daughters went to the same high school I did, and even though I don't know them personally, he always manages to keep up the light chatter about what they're doing with their lives during the exam. My mom goes to him, too.

Conversely, I had the worst experience of my life with a female gyno at Planned Parenthood in New York. She was rough and mean, told me I was WAAAAAY too fat and probably diabetic (I was probably about 230 at the time, with NO symptoms of diabetes), made me take a fasting blood sugar test right then and there (I passed with flying colors), and later was even more cruel when I got an abnormal PAP result back and she was the one doing the colposcopy. If I didn't have to go back once a year for my pill prescription, it might have scared me off the annual exam for good.

Gosh that sucks!!!

This is one of the reasons I avoid doctors unless I am in major pain or ill. I've walked out of many offices myself. One time I took my son to a pediatrician and she was soooo rude that I walked out without saying anything. When the bill came in the mail for my co-pay I refused to pay it and told the insurance company that she was rude and a horrible doctor and that I will NOT ever return again. Needless to say...the insurance company did not make me pay.

His daughters went to the same high school I did, and even though I don't know them personally, he always manages to keep up the light chatter about what they're doing with their lives during the exam. My mom goes to him, too. Conversely, I had the worst experience of my life with a female gyno at Planned Parenthood in New York. She was rough and mean, told me I was WAAAAAY too fat and probably diabetic (I was probably about 230 at the time, with NO symptoms of diabetes), made me take a fasting blood sugar test right then and there (I passed with flying colors), and later was even more cruel when I got an abnormal PAP result back and she was the one doing the colposcopy. If I didn't have to go back once a year for my pill prescription, it might have scared me off the annual exam for good. __________________ 263.5/234.0/180 Induction re-started again 8/7/06

This is one of the reasons I avoid doctors unless I am in major pain or ill. I've walked out of many offices myself. One time I took my son to a pediatrician and she was soooo rude that I walked out without saying anything. When the bill came in the mail for my co-pay I refused to pay it and told the insurance company that she was rude and a horrible doctor and that I will NOT ever return again. Needless to say...the insurance company did not make me pay.
