..... terrible Christmas
Hi everyone,
Just a quick note to ask everyone for good thoughts and prayers for us this year. On Christmas eve while watching the tube in the living room my husband noticed a funny smell... I looked up and saw a very fine trail of smoke on the ceiling and quickly got up to follow where it was coming from. The plug in the wall in our den was on fire and the back of the sofa was totally in flames !! We moved the couch hoping that we could somehow put it out but, unfortunately, this gave the fire oxygen and it quickly shot up the wall. Bob grabbed the dog and I called 911 and we quickly got out of the house ... ran to the neighbour who brought his fire extinguisher with him and another neighbour a couple of houses down also ran over with his and they broke the patio doors and quickly put the fire out. By the time emergency services arrived the fire was out but in just that little time the fire department estimates that the damages are probably in the $100 K range. Everything in the living, dining, kitchen, laundry room and den was touched either by the flames or the heat and all of it including ceilings, walls, floors and furniture must be replaced ... everything melted from the intense heat! We had a shelf on the wall with about 100 CDs on it and now it's one huge CD !! It`s quite a mess but thankfully we got out ok and our insurance company has us living in a nice apartment for the next few months. We probably won`t be back in the house much before May. I would appreciate your prayers though as it`s a bit of a stressful time for us. Thanks. PennyD |

We had a fire from a lightening strike several years back. We were lucky that it woke us up, or the damage would have been much worse. I'll keep you in my prayers. Good luck!

So glad you are all OK!! In 1979 we lost everything we owned in a fire that started in the apartment below ours....I still to this day, if I smell someone burning leaves 5 blocks away -- I gotta make sure its not us. We ended up going to fake, gas fireplace logs....no matter what wood we tried after we burned it - the smell the next couple days just drove me nuts. God Bless and watch over your family...so very glad you are safe!! ![]() |

Thank God you noticed it when you were awake, Penny! You're safe and settled into a place of your own for now and will be back in your home.
I, my family, went thru a house fire also. God bless you and your family thru this tough, trying time. ![]() |

As someone who just got back in our house after the Hurricane Katrina rebuild, believe me I empathise.
This is a good lesson for everyone though. You should have at least 2-3 fire extinguishers in your home/apt. Fire dept.s can never respond quickly enough to save your belongings. Keep one in the Kitchen, one in the bedroom, and distribute them elsewhere, especially if you have a two or three story place. Fire is nothing to mess around with. It spreads soooo quickly. |

I`m so sorry this has happened to you. We had a fire in our family that took a life years ago. It never leaves you when that happens. I hope your family can mend and move forward.
