Disturbing/kinda sad story

So I have an 83 yo housemate (I'm a full-time grad student in an expensive resort town). We rarely ever talk because our schedules are so different.

However I was talking to her (let's call her Mary) today and she was telling me a little about her childhood & how she had a thyroid problem and was always overweight (she lost a lot of weight after her 6th child & was slim from then on).

So she was telling me that when she was about 5 or 6 - before she started school (she grew up on a ranch) - the doctor told her mother that because Mary was so overweight that'd be best she get used to the inevetible teasing from her future classmates by having her brothers tease her about her weight. This way I guess he reasoned it wouldn't be so traumatic?

So to this day - 77 years later - she still has a complex. She's very trim but those names still are in her head. Granted she does have an amazing, very kind & upbeat attitude - you'd never know.

Just had to share - I'm just slightly disturbed by this story
Doesn't sound like a very well thought out plan to me.

That was in a rural town (I assume since she gew up on a ranch) and 77 to 78 years ago. Different mentality.

Can you imagine it happening now? No way. Sheesh, my soon 2 be 9 yr old SS told a kid he smelled (cuz the kid was passing gas - medical condition we are told) and SS was sent to the office and written up for bullying.

That was before the current era of political correctness - probably the best advice they had available at the time - poor thing!

I don't agree with that at all..."They didn't know any better." What were they, STUPID?? I am sure they knew what it was like being called names. It was 1929..it wasn't prehistoric times! There were Educated People among the living!

I would have given her a Big Hug and told her how great of a person she was...I bet she would have LOVED that, and would have felt that someone knew and acknowledged that what had happened was wrong.

I guess they expect a very young 9 year old boy to say, please go somewhere else and do that.... Not!! None of us can believe they called that bullying. Sometimes I think the pendulum has swung a bit too far to the side of caution. They are kids!

How did we get from the original post to a story about a 9 your old boy with a gas problem?

If that was directed to my comment above...that is not being rude...it is being truthful...I think too many people have leaned so far left that they make excuses for the ones who are at fault...

Emotional abuse is not Okay...and that is exactly what it was!

People were as educated then as 50 years from now they will say we too were educated and they will be sorry that we were not educated enough, as in : "we did the best we could with what we had." Boy we have grown and boy do we have a long way to go. Most of us leave a trail of tears. Just my opinion however.
