Religion question

hey all.. not sure where to post this, but here goes

I am having a VERY hard time with my lit class. I have been trying to get into this reading assignment, but its very hard for me to grasp. I was wondering if you could offer me some insight, if you dont mind? Its over the Book of Job from the old testament.. How do you think the notion of god's power, wisdom, and sovereignty in this world affect the human concept of justice? What about the relationships between Job and his friends? The differences between Bildad, Eliphaz, Zophar and Elihu? What do you think of the characteristics of Satan? Anything else worth mentioning? Sorry for the long PM, im just really struggling here.. Thanks so much for any insight

I'm not at home where my Bible is, but i'll share what I can from memory.

First clue about Satan is Genesis 3:1-5 where he challenges not God's POWER but his right to rule, his soverignty. Also calls God a liar here. Satan tells Eve she will not die if she disobeys God but will become a goddess herself knowing good and bad.

Second clue is in book of Job. Satan claims 'a man' including Job will not be
faithful and keep integrity to God if tested by losing property, children, wealth, ect. When that didnt work he claimed, skin in behalf of skin...let me touch his flesh. God allowed Satan to put his servant Job to the test. God did not cause the suffering but he did permit Satan to do so. Proverbs 27:11 written hundreds of years later show Satan is still trying to get people to turn away from God. "Be wise my son and make my heart rejoice that I may make a reply to him that is taunting me". Rev. 12 shows Satan is the one taunting God...day and night.

Bildad, Eliphaz, and Zophar were not true friends but false comforters. They did not upbuild Job but tore him down mentally. They were sure Job must of sinned and God was punishing him for this. Job insisted he had not but they didnt believe him. Job felt the need to justify himself and ended up having to be counseled by Elihu.

Elihu was a good example of a good friend. He listened, was empathetic, and gave encouraging sound counsel even though he was much younger than Job.
He helped Job understand that there was much Job did not understand and who was he to assume God had acted unjustly in his behalf. He asked him questions to draw him out and make him think.... Where were you when I created the heavens,,,etc.

The book of Job helps us understand that the fight between Satan and the Creator is about Soverignty. Will any humans serve God because we love him and think his ways are righteous and just or is our worship based on selfish ends? Moses, Abraham, Noah, Job, David, Jesus and others have proved there ARE humans who will be faithful. The question still must be answered regarding us individually.

I found Job difficult too but there are easier versions of the bible that you can read on biblegateway.com if the version in your lit book is too hard. It's probably King James Version or New King James Version and they aren't necessarily very easy.

Are these the exact questions for your assignment? I wouldn't feel right offering you any answers to these questions since the whole point of the assignment is for you to come to your OWN conclusions and form your own opinions. I hope you won't cheat yourself out of that. Even though it may seem like the last thing you wanna do is the assignment, by the time you get done with it you may be glad you explored it.
