Big Thumbs Down

For Fad Diets...

Over the 4th of July, my in-laws were ever so happy to say that they've been on the Cabbage Soup Diet, and they'd lost some weight.

Since they had family staying with them from out of state, they ate pumpkin pie and a bunch of other non-diet foods.

I saw her this last weekend, and asked her if her and my FIL were going back to their Cabbage Soup Diet.

She says, "Well, we never went off it... We deviated some, because we had company stayng with us for a week, though we never went off it."

Well, apparently, her and I have different understandings of "deviating a little, though still being on plan."

Oh yeah, I forgot pumpkin pie was on that diet... *snicker* I better think of switching to it myself...

I really, really want to say something like, "Do y'all think you can eat this way forever?..."

Why not pick a truely GOOD WOE, instead of jumping onto the Cabbage Soup Train... Cause you know, it'll run you over... *snicker*

Why not find a way you can eat for LIFE???

I just wish I could talk to them about this, without coming off better then them. Though I know that's how they'll perceive it...

So, I'll just grin... and keep my mouth shut. Enjoying being at goal.

I am almost 45 and still remember - yuck, yuck, yuck - trying the cabbage soup diet when I was in my teens. Wonder if it is the same one.

Just a thought but maybe if you gave them a copy of the 'book' they might read it and it might make sense to them. That is how I happened to realize that Dr. Atkins really made sense. I'm guessing there is literature for Scarsdale too.

Yeah...that cabbage soup diet gets old quick

and...people have to think about keeping the weight off after the diet.
I mean who wants to eat that soup "all the time"

or even keep going back to it to maintain.......

I've given them literature on every plan I've done.

They've tried Scarsdale, Atkins, low cal, and a plethora of other diets. They've hopped on these... Uhmmm... For maybe a week?

They choose not to further educate themselves and make the commitment to a REAL plan that WORKS and is good for them.

SunaBee: You are right..to just smile..and say "Whatever works for you"...and we all know that this Cabbage Soup is going to get "old"..(even though it is lowcarb..and nice once in a while).

The best advice is a great example....like you are!

WOE: Atkins
Start Date: August 2004
Mybe this works for them best so far? I go off plan for weeks at a time and maintain ok. I'm not at ultimate goal but I've kept 17 lbs off for about 2 years now. I think of Atkins as my for-life WOE but I don't beat myself up about the bad weeks I've had because I know I can come back and it will feel so good. With time my cheats are becoming non-existent because I just love Atkins so much. I don't think I'll ever stray away forever.

BUT - I know people who've kept weight off for years eating virtually the same thing everyday When I did Jenny Craig a counselor told me that she did that - she didn't want her food to taste good or feel special because it was a slippery slope. She thought of food as nothing other than fuel for a few years and kept 150 lbs. off. It's her plan to do that forever.

So, I dunno. Different strokes. It wouldn't work for me but neither does low-fat and people have been successful with that for ages.
