Any stress eaters out there?

I've never been a stress eater. I really never felt a lot of stress. But lately (by lately I mean my mom came to live with me on Saturday) I can't really seem to stop eating. I don't know if its a way to get away from my mom, being in the kitchen cooking, or what. I'm dead scared of getting on the scale. I am fighting the urge to go get another piece of LC lasagna.

Oh, Caly, I think many of us go through this. Every 5-6 weeks I get this desire to eat everything in the fridge. It is sooooo hard to fight. I like to think that these tests of our dedication will mean that we will get a whoosh soon. Hang in there, girl!

I'm positively a stress eater. I wish I knew a solution. The good part I go in spurts. As long as when I overindulge I stick to lc - to much damage isn't done.

i'm definitely a stress/emotional eater. i have a chronic illness. every time i have a relapse, all of my good intentions go straight out the window. for just a brief minute, having something i really want (yes, that brownie or cookie) makes me feel a little better.

i know it's a bad habit. i've tried to think of something to counteract it but nothing has worked yet. i've just decided to do the best i can each day.

getting on the scale every day does help a little. reminding myself that i don't want to keep re-losing the same weight over and over again helps me contain the bad eating.

I have suffered from this for years. It's hard to get under control but it's a lot harder trying to live with being overweight!! Now when I absolutely have to have something to snack on I stick with vegetables or fruit. If I'm having a bad day I can put away half a bag of mini carrots or a container of grape tomatoes!! But it's better than a lot of other high calorie choices. I'm not doing atkins so the carrots and fruits are ok....on atkins just stick with other vegetables, cut up cucumber or green beans or brocolli....whatever veggies you like.

My mother and father in law have been staying with us for the last 10 days. I've already gained back 3 pounds. I haven't even bothered to post in over a week. It's not only the stress but the fact that everything we cook is to suit them and I've just gotten tired of trying to eat right when dinner is spaghetti or hoagies or taco rice not to mention they've both had birthdays and cakes. They are leaving tomorrow and I'm going on a yogurt fast. Good luck and big hugs.

Caly, this is a weekly if not daily struggle for me. I'm telling you if I don't have a handle on it I will wake up 3 months from now 170lbs...no joke. The thought of that freaks me out thus adding more stress....where's the oreos?
PS My mom lives with me too...

Stress makes me lose my appetite. It's when I'm happy or celebrating or having fun with friends that I feel a desperate need to eat, eat, eat. Wonder what makes us that way? Maybe when we had these same emotions as kids we were either fed or not fed. Anyone have any ideas? Maybe journaling how you're feeling would help, Caly. (Just hide it from your mom)

Hi Caly:
My Mom died two years ago. I would give just about anything to have her back.

The first thing I would do is look at all of the reasons I was lucky to have my Mom around to irritate me and really look at how you would feel is she was really gone forever.

Next, figure out what is causing the stress. Is it just the stress of a new person in your house, is it something that your mom does etc. Then figure out what you can do to deal with the stress. (This will depend on what is causing it) Some ideas might be to go for a walk, take up a hobby such as knitting or crochet, give yourself some time for yourself out of the house etc.

If your Mom is causing the stress by saying/doing something that upsets you, first realize that your Mom loves you and doesn’t mean to upset you. She is trying to help. (even if she makes things worse by her comments) Second be aware that you can’t change another’s behavior, only your own. Decide how you will react ahead of time. This could be to not answer and walk away, it could be a pat answer such as, “I hear you” after which you change the subject, or another response.

Good luck to you and your Mother

Betty Morgan

Unfortunately, I am not only a stress eater, but an "everything's going fine, think I'll stuff my face" eater, both of which got me in this mess to begin with. I'm really working on this now and I feel like I'm making progress, but the proof is in the pudding I guess (no pun intended).

I'm totally a stress eater, too, Caly!

Last spring my MIL was diagnosed w/ ovarian cancer. She died 3 months later and one month before my wedding. I didn't gain weight during the time, but it did keep me from losing because my WOE went out the window w/ the whole situation. I would just eat and eat and eat, because that's what I do when I get stressed.

Thus the reason college was a problem... if I had a test I was worried about, I'd eat while studying. My friends and I would go out to the bars and drink to blow off steam on the weekends. Before I knew it, I went from 135 lbs my freshman year of college to the 180 my senior year of college. RIDICULOUS.

I wish there was some advice I could give, but um... since I stress eat.. I don't think I really know what to do about it!

I'm a stress eater too - I found Dr. Phil McGraw's book helpful with it ( didn't cure the problem, but it's a step in the right direction)

but my best advice is to come to lowcarbfriends instead!!!

I am a coach, father, husband, teacher and back in school to get an admin degree. I go like crazy from sun up to sundown.

I am a huge stress eater. After games in the fall, I come home and eat non stop for about 4 hours. Use to be chips, pizza, cookies, ice cream.

I am also a huge emotional eater in that I dont want to hurt peoples feelings when at someones home. I remember growing up hearing eat everything on your plate or you will hurt your aunts feelings or grandmas feelings. I am married to a picky eater and my kids are a bit picky and whe we go to my parents home I would eat so as my mom would not feel bad sitting in the kitchen and all this food was not eaten.

Stess and emotions are my downfall

I found myself eating a chocolate chip cookie (ok, 4 not just 1) yesterday. It didn't even taste good to me. Now I'm angry with myself. I've got to get over this. That is the first time I ate off plan so I'm not too worried about it but I don't want to do it again.

Thanks for all your input everyone

Stress nor happy times necessarily trigger me to eat. However - when I'm alone (or just the kids are around) - that is when I eat. The "no one is looking eater" I guess is what I am called.
