Went to the Dr. and I am MORTIFIED...

I just had to post...I am freaking out about this and this board was the only place I could think of where people might actually understand.

I had a routine doctor's appointment today, and my regular physician was away so I had to see one of his associates. So after the nurse does the usual blood pressure, temp, weight, etc., the doctor comes in. The first thing he says to me after introducing himself is, "Well, you're clearly obese, and you've gained 13 pounds since you were here last year. What are you doing about this?" When I finally picked my jaw up off the floor after a few moments, I said to him "Actually I have been limiting my carbs and I've lost 8 pounds so far."

Well, that was the WRONG thing to say. I then sat there for 20 minutes and listened to him lecture me about the dangers of LC eating, and how eating low fat is the only way to lose weight healthfully. I felt like a 4-year-old!!!! I was MORTIFIED! I wanted so badly to argue with him and tell him that I've done the research, I know what I'm doing, but I couldn't get a single word out. He ended his speech by saying "You know, 228 lbs. is too much for you to be carrying around (yeah, cause I didn't know THAT, Einstein!) and besides, it doesn't look good."

It doesn't look good.

After that, the cherry on top was when he took out his red pen and wrote the word "OBESE" in big capital letters on my chart.

I am totally beside myself right now. I have done nothing but hide in my room and cry since I got home. He made me feel completely inadequate, stupid, inhuman even. It doesn't look good - WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?!?!?!

I'm so sorry to go on and on, but I just can't believe this and I don't know what to do.

I am so sorry that happened to you. Don't know if it will make you feel any better but my Dr. was thrilld with the idea that I was doing an LC diet. And by the way we go see Dr.s when we feel bad so they can help make us feel better. DUMP your Dr. What a jerk.

Oh and if you ever see this Dr. again kick him in the knee and tell him it was from me. NOBODY should tell you that you don't look good.

And here I know I would need a hug after that abuse.

Your Doctor works FOR YOU! I'd phone the office and ask to speak with him...actually I'd demand to speak to him..and then I'd let him have it with both barrels!!!! And if he won't come to the phone, I'd make an appointment and then when I saw him I'd tell him to get lost

I'm so sorry about what happened to you.
No one has the right to speak to anyone in that way.
You really should let him know either by phone or a letter.
And make sure that you tell the other doctor that is there too.
He has a terrible bed side manner.
I pray that you have a better week.
Love, Yvonne

I feel sad that someone felt he had the right to talk to you that way. Know in your heart that the problem there was not you but him and his ignorance. You are doing what is good and right and best for your body.

I understand why you have been crying in your room and you have certainly earned a good cry after that stuff. (Better than eating!) Once you get through that, good self care should be your highest priority, including a new doctor.

Sending love and support your way ,

Kathy

I'm not sure how fast I can type the words "Dump that JERK of a doctor," but do it quicker than that!!!

Makes me upset, sad and angry just to think about his behavior toward you! How dare he do that -- just how dare he - what a true and total JERK!!!!

I'm much older than most of you, and I'm of an age now where I no longer put up with that kind of treatment. I'll speak my mind and then make my exit, but I used to not be that bold, so I totally understand how he made you feel.

Find yourself a doctor with some compassion and some smarts and one with some idea of how to treat his/her patients.

Hugs to you!

that was very unprofessional. I would speak to your primary care provider about that. This doc doesnt know you, has no doc-patient realationship with you to be making conclusions about your lifestyle. What a jerk.

Inform your doctor, in writing (and keep a copy for yourself) of what happened when you visited his associate. He needs to know what kind of conduct is going on in his office. I would also have a note put on your chart to say that you do not want to be seen by Dr. Associate again.

I think some doctors are throwing that word around for shock value.

A friend of mine went through just that exact humiliation about 3 months ago. He also was told previously that if he didn't consent to go on cholesterol lowering medication - he would not treat him.

Needless to say, my friend is now taking medication - and has not given a thought to correcting his cholesterol with diet or exericse. He found the whole 'obese' thing laughable.

In my book - these doctors had better wake up - take their superior attitude and put it you know where.

excellent advice from jamnut. Be sure and follow up because you deserve to be heard.

BTW everytime I saw my doctor for the past four years I have been lectured on how wonderful Low Carb is and how his whole family is on it.

Also I like what MandyDee said. He works for you. If you arn't satisfied then make sure everyone knows it.

Then as soon as you do that, forget he ever existed and buy a wedding magazine and look at pretty dresses. (your profile says you are getting married. congrats!)

OK, from a slightlly different perspective!

Doctors nowadays get sued at the drop of a hat. Patients blame them for everything. Perhaps this doctor thought he was covering his own butt by making sure you knew he had told you, and had written on your chart, that you were obese and therefore prone to health problems which you now KNOW about, so you can't sue him for not telling you that you were unhealthy!

I'm not defending him - just saying.

NOW, that being said, it IS a free country (still) and you have the right to choose another doctor, or as mentioned above, to continue to go to the same office but refuse to see this Dr. X again.

And yep, wouldn't it be great to go back in a year, and have those BIG RED LETTERS removed from your chart??

He is obviously uneducated about low carb or he wouldn't have been so harsh about it. Prove him wrong!

Char

when your old doc is back in the office , call and let him know how rude this jerk was to you. I had a doctor treat me badly one time, he had me in tears, in the middle of him talking to hear himself I told him, 'Your fired' and walked out without paying the bill, doctors are not Gods and should treat you with respect, after all they are working for you. Im sorry this happened to you but I would complain to my reg doc.

Absolutely tell the other doctor, the office manager, the administrator of the hospital. Tell someone because you KNOW you are not the only overweight patient he's ever seen. If he's treating them all like this, they're likely leaving in droves and the people in charge wonder why. Meantime, Dr. Meanie goes on abusing patients due to his own PERSONAL feelings about weight and diets.

Then, if you feel you must find another doctor, do so. But don't leave quietly.

that is AWESOME.

that doctor is rude and unprofessional... i hope you tell your regular Dr. or maybe send a letter to the hospital or medical group. Dont forget the Dr. is working for you, he is doing you a service, you are paying him to help you, just as a manicurist, car repair, veterinarian, massage therapist, dentist, etc. are. You have a choice as to who you choose for medical services, just like anything else.

Having said that... I would have cried all day too. What a shock! I hope you are feeling better now. You are doing a great job and are taking the right path to health!

congratulations on the 8lbs loss! That's really good.

Don't stress as you are changing. Please don't let it discourage you. You are doing the right thing.

That happened to me once. I had lost a lot of weight but was still "obese" and I went to the doctor but my normal doctor was away so had to see someone else. He first thing he said to me was:

"You are definitely obese. You need to stop eating the large amounts of potatoes with milk and butter straight away. You need to stop eating your high sugar desserts. You need to stop eating potato chips. Also stop eating the fish and chips."

My jaw dropped to the floor as well. I couldn't get a word in because he wouldn't shut up. I didn't say anything because I was too upset and I thought he wouldn't believe me anyway. I just got out of there quick smart.

So I know how you are feeling. At the time that he said that to me I had not eaten that kind of stuff for months! I felt so hurt and had tears in my eyes but would not let them come. When I got home I cried for hours and was upset for days. I HATE when people automatically think just because you are overweight that you eat all the wrong foods AND if you are dieting they think that it's not working or that you are cheating!

Keep doing what you are doing and you will win!
