grossest way to lose weight Warning-graphic

I have a co-worker who has H-Pylori, the bug that causes ulcers. She has had it for over 3 months with vomiting and diarea. She finally confessed that she isn't getting it treated until she reaches a certain clothes size. She calls the H-Pylori the poor woman's bypass. She's willing to go through this to lose weight. What really ticks me off is that she's exposing everyone in the offiice to this disease. And I'm sorry but she doesn't do a very good job of cleaning up after herself. I know this because we use the same restroom on this floor. I'm scared I'm going to catch this stuff.
Have any of you ever heard of something so, so .... I don't know what to call it. Gross, or can someone be that desperate to lose weight? I know she doesnt make much money and she really is getting thin but at what cost? She hasn't changed her eating habits, so once she's cured she'll just gain again. Meanwhile I feel like wearing a HAZMAT suit everytime I go near the restroom.
It makes me think of something I read about Victorian ladies who wanted to keep their "wasp waist." Supposedly they would swallow tape worms in older to stay slim. My apologies for the details of this post but I needed to vent and get some outside advice and reaction to this. Thanks in advance.

You'd be amazed at the lengths some are willing to go to..and the tape worm thing was common as recently as the sixties!

But as far as the H pylori goes..you don't need to panic. It is a very common bacteria to have...as many as 20% of the population carries it and most will remain without developing the peptic ulcers. Transmission is generally via contaminated food or water, not airborne, although very intimate contact can spread it too (ie. kissing). Should you end up with it too, treatment isn't particularly difficult. The antibiotic of choice is metronidazole (Flagyl) in conjunction with a strong antacid.

Hope that eases your mind although I certainly do understand your position.

Best wishes...Mandy

I think that it is wrong to expose anyone to something that they can get. I think that it is irresponsible.

mandy from what i hear and read the biggest problem with h.pylori is not the ulcer causing part but that it can predispose u to thinks like esophageal cancer and stomach cancer.

so if i had it i would want to get rid of it as quickly as possible.

I'd report it, also. If she wants to ruin her own body, fine.

But, when she crosses the line to create an uncomfortable (dirty) or unsafe (unsanitary) environment for co-workers, she deprives you the right of a safe and comfortable work environment.

Plus, since she's not changing her eating habits, she'll only revert back again - so, you're not even biding your time to help her, you're implicitly encouraging this self-destructive behavior.

Mandy thanks for some info on the H-pylori. Flagyl has been around for some time, I'd think you can even get generic by now. So much for her earlier excuse that treatment was too expensive.
As far as reporting her as suggested, I have thought about it. Unfortunatley the human resourses department is a joke. I've seen them sweep employee on employee stalking under the rug as well as sexual harrasment. And they don't really encourage anyone to use the insurance (what little they provide.) As long as she keeps dragging to work they won't ask her to see a doctor. This is a pretty rough working enviornment.
Plus, I feel like I've in some way violated her confidence by talking about her health condition, even on a no-names chat-bulletin board. But at the same time she's exposing us to this condition as well as other complications, like Pooticus listed.
Ahhh, I'm really on the fence and conflicted about this. Thanks for responding folks.

You could call the health department (ask not to give your name)and ask them about H-pylori and tell them what is going on in your work place. Hopefully they will step in and deal with this situtation. If she has talked to others about this in the work place or others have heard or witnessed her trips to the restroom, she would have no concrete evidence that it was you that called.

It's funny how when we are trying to help someone that needs help but won't ask for it we are leary to help for fear of what they will think of us.

GOOD LUCK!

I feel really sorry for you being in this situation. That woman sounds whacked out......

I'm not trying to be funny in the least, but can you keep a can of Lysol at work and when you need to use the restroom you could spray the hell out of the seat (I'd even spray the door knob!) And/or pick up some toilet seat covers if your work doesn't provide them?

I don't think I'd tell HR, especially since yours sounds like a sorry excuse for one! I'd just try to protect myself.

What I find more disturbing is the fact that she is telling people.
I view it very similar to an individual going about bragging that they have an eating disorder.
All she is diong is degrading herself. And its pathetic. Don't give her the attention she is seeking.

Exactly! Call the Board of Health.
I had something...can't remember what LOL, and had the Flagyl med, I couldn't work for a week, but my doc called the Board of Health...they contacted me to see if I had been drinking well water or what salad bars I had eaten at...they were trying to track the source.

But the Board of Health treated the condition in a serious manner and were quite serious about not wanting more public exposed to it.

You really should act upon this.

Good luck!

(I think all weight loss due to illness just generally comes back on when you can eat normally again...seems really ignorant to me to let herself be affected by this over a longer period of time. IMHO)

I know this is an old thread but I had to comment on h-pylori. Most everyone has a little bit of this nasty bacteria in their body. Have no idea what caused mine to start growing at such a fast rate but I had a very high count which has created an ulcer. I had been feeling poorly for several months and was diagnosed with an ulcer recently. I have been taking the round of antibiotics which is supposed to destroy the bacteria (as well as the good bacteria). Now I'm taking meds to heal the ulcer itself. All I can say, is that anyone who would put up with the pain and misery I went through just to lose a few pounds has got to be crazy. I hope that girl got herself treated. I know most people with ulcers tend to be thin because you lose your appetite and many things you eat causes the pain to feel worse. I may gain a few pounds once I get rid of this problem but let me tell you, there are other ways to lose weight. I must say the treatments are quite expensive but to get rid of this pain in my back and tummy and regain some energy, its worth it.

Wish someone had an update on this girl. I'm curious as to how she is doing and if she did anything about it.
